Good evening, it's Monday the 30^th of January. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday of the month, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow: part II of an expansive chat with author, journalist and critic Rand Richards Cooper, who interviewed director Martin Scorcese about his new film Silence for the Catholic journal Commonweal. The film, in theaters now, tells the story of two Jesuit priests searching for their mentor and tending to a Catholic flock in hiding in 17th century Japan, when practicing Christianity was punishable by torture and death. Tonight, the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown offers its regular Monday night open mic and Moments of Gratitude. Tuesday from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm the Buttonwood introduces a NEW WEEKLY class, Intentional and Empowering Yoga. On Tuesday nights, hear Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra work out new material on stage. Wednesday’s Community Blues Ja m will be hosted by Ed Bradley this week. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts ramps back up after winter break with the opening reception for Clarissa Tossin’s solo show Stereoscopic Vision on Tuesday at the Zilkha Gallery, exploring three-dimensional visualization and the workings of human perception through photographs. On February 1^st, another exhibit opens--The Old Northern Capital—Beijing, with talks from Curator Lucia Wang. Also on the first is a singing workshop in the World Music Hall. Further, as part of the University Lecture series, Lars Jan will give a lecture about his recent performance work, The Institute of Memory. Thursday features "Adilei" Ensemble Concert: Georgian Traditional Music. Senior thesis projects and performances run through the weekend.

Hartford’s Real Art Ways has extended their run of Neruda, a lavishly-mounted reimagining of the Nobel Prize-winning poet’s pursuit into political exile, starring Gael García Bernal. Both Neruda and Things to Come, detailing a professor’s journey through her husband’s abandonment, run through the 2^nd. On screen Friday is Tanna, a film set in the south pacific that explores its native tribes. Details & screening times at realartways.org

Tonight at 9pm, Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts reemerges from winter break with a free performance of Hidden Volumes, a performance by Associate Professor of Music Paula Matthusen and Visiting Scholar in Music Terri Hron explore and remember space through magnetic, transferred traces. Looping backwards and forwards, distorting time, they improvise on a series of recordings originally made in a dark Roman aqueduct. It all takes place in Olin Library. Sunday at 3pm at the Russell House, there’s a concert by singer-songwriter Jess Best performing her original soul and jazz compositions. She will be accompanied by Connor Schultze on bass and Paul Bloom on piano. Details @ wesleyan.edu/cfa

Sunday night brings the return of “Wax”, a monthly party at Firehouse 12 in New Haven celebrating 45 rpm records and vintage fashion and dance culture. The event happens from 9- midnight with a retro outfit contest and Wax Resident DJ's NEB and Dooley-O plus special guest DJ Boogie Blind of the Legendary award winning "Executioners" DJ crew. Tonight at 10pm they present, for their Friday night moonlight movies series, a special screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s classic animated film, Princess Mononoke. Sunday, Cinestudio begins a run of what is being dubbed as “The year’s most devastating – and necessary – documentary” Fuocomarre (Fire At Sea) offering a glimpse into the dangerous sea crossing of refugees from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Also on Sunday afternoon they are screening The Birth of A Nation written and directed by Nate Parker and this one-time showing is presented by Trinity College’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. Looping backwards and forwards, distorting time, they improvise on a series of recordings originally made in a dark Roman aqueduct. Saturday’s weekly Jazz Jam Session is hosted by  Tony DioGuardi and Friends. Saturday night there’s an event called NHV Plays Leonard Cohen, where a collection of New Haven's musical talents pay tribute to the late, legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen. Tonight begins a run of Neruda, a lavishly-mounted reimagining of the Nobel Prize-winning poet’s pursuit into political exile, and notably marks his reunion with No star Gael García Bernal. Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues a run of a 4K restoration of the 1968 classic, The Lion in Winter, starring Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole.
