Good evening, it's Friday, December 14th, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here's a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

At The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, throughout the month of December, photos by WESU's own dj Bill Revill are exhibited. Tonight Marci Geller's Open Book Tour comes in to The Buttonwood, with a musical trio led by singer-songwriter Geller on piano and vocals. Saturday afternoon, in association with Holiday on Main Street, the Middletown Parks and Recreation Department sponsors an ornament decorating activity. Supplies will be provided. Saturday evening brings the Electroacoustic Improvisation to The Buttonwood.  Among the performers is a percussionist/laptopist and an effects-addicted guitarist. The music has been called ambient, spacious and cinematic.
Sunday, and every Sunday, Food Not Bombs shares food at about 1 pm in front of The Buttonwood Tree welcome to all.  Prior to the feasting, you're invited to help prepare vegetarian food at the First Church at 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.
Later on Sunday, at 4pm Suzy Lamson hosts a Poetry Potluck, not an open mic and not a salon, the afternoon falls safely in between and is meant for poets and poem lovers. Find out more about Buttonwood events at www.buttonwood.org.

ARTFARM's Circus for a Fragile Planet presents SUBMERGED! at Green Street Arts Center, 51 Green Street in Middletown tonight. SUBMERGED!  is a sixty minute, five person circus about water-related environmental issues. The show starts on the beaches, lawns and bathrooms of central Connecticut and journeys around the globe, exploring human impacts on the hydrosphere through the artistry, imagination and spectacle of circus. There's blues dancing at Vinnie's Jump and Jive tonight, things get started at 7 pm with dance classes and continue until midnight with dancing. Find out more about the classes and open dance at vinniesjumpandjive.com

On Saturday beginning at 8pm, listen to classic rock with lively dance music by Out of the Basement at the Canoe Club at Harbor Park, 80 Harbor Drive in Middletown. On Sunday at 5pm the Canoe Club features the jazz trio, The Three of Us, for dancing and listening and then at 6pm the Eric Kuhn Group takes the stage at the Club.

The Rusted Keys play Sunday morning, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Higher Grounds, 70 Main Street, East Hampton. The Keys (Diane Kozikowski & Dave Downs) perform a style of music they call "Nouveau Croon," blending early jazz/pop influences with modern acoustic sensibilities. Down in New Haven at Toad's Place tonight you'll find Riders on the Storm, a Tribute to the Doors, in a celebration of Jim Morrison's birthday, as well as Electric Lady Band, INK, Silvergun, Terra Firma, and Action Potential. Saturday, it's Marion Meadows' Annual Jazz Christmas Show. At Café Nine in New Haven, the Friday happy hour brings in Sal Paradise, followed by Bill Kirchen's Honky Tonk Christmas, with The Forgotten Ones, described as "the twangiest holiday show in town" with the Titan of the Telecaster Bill Kirchen. Then Saturday, it's the  Afternoon Jazz Jam w/ host Tony Dioguardi and Friends, followed by the North Shore Troubadours; w/ the Clams; MC "Thick Beef" and DJ Dave Coon. Sunday, it's the Sunday After Supper Jam with host Kevin St. James and the Legendary Cafe Nine All-Stars. More can be found at cafenine.com

Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally's tonight the Bob Margolis Blues Band & Friends will be in. Saturday at Sally's it's Jeff Pitchell & Texas Flood. More can found at blackeyedsallys.com

Now let's take a look at cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford tonight and continuing through the weekend into next week catch "The Flat", "a film that begins as a family quest but evolves into a gripping study of know-don't-tell reticence and the umbilical tie of a lost homeland." The Waiting Room, a character-driven documentary film that uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients is a weekend choice as well. And on Saturday, it's the Best of the New York International Children's Film Festival Kid Flix Mix 2012, a family favorite, suited for Real Art Ways' youngest audiences, ages 4 to 8. At Cinestudio, Trinity College's cinema through the weekend, also in 4-K, are screenings of Samsara. Shot over four years in 100 locations in 25 countries, it offers images of our planet that few of us will have the opportunity to see in person. The mesmerizing scenes of unprecedented clarity were created by shooting large format 65mm film, then transferring the film through the highest resolution scanning process available to the new 4K format. Tonight also brings a 10:30 p.m. showing of Back to the Future, with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, to Cinestudio. More can be found at cinestudio.org.

For the next half hour, until 7pm you have the Middletown Youth Radio Project - A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7, until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

From 10 until Midnight, take in

from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.
