Good evening. It's Friday, March 9th, and this is the Jive at Five, WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here's a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

Tonight at the Buttonwood Tree, Stacy Phillips and Paul Howard will perform their Grammy Award-winning Neo Urban Traditional music at 8PM. Saturday at 8, The John Funkhouser Trio will be playing all original music and Sunday at 4 it's an afternoon Double Bill featuring EMILY HURD / ORICE JENKINS. Chicago-based songwriter and pianist, Emily Hurd, plays folk-pop songs that tell stories of old-fashioned love and its bittersweet triumph, and the Hartford jazz pianist ORICE JENKINS premiers his never-before-seen folk side. The 13th annual DanceMasters Weekend Showcase Performance will feature dancers and choreography from three outstanding companies: Garth Fagan Dance, Pilobolus, and Camille A. Brown. This Saturday at 8 in Wesleyan university's CFA theater. check out http://www.wesleyan.edu/dancemasters for details.

Opening Saturday at 1pm, with the opening reception from 5 to 7pm, is the 31^st annual Middletown Public Schools K-12 Art Show in the Ezra & Cecile Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University. The show runs through Mar. 18. Visit arts2go.org for more details.

At Toad's Place in New Haven, tonight The Kooks headline, with Morning Parade and Yawn also livening up the bill. And tonight, at Lilly’s Pad in Toad’s Place, AFTON presents a local showcase with eight bands, including -- but not limited to -- Sean O’Reilly, Century Old Stunners, The Condescending Foxes, The Blacksheep Collective, and Meet Emily. Tonight at Cafe Nine in New Haven, at Happy Hour, Christina Santore plays cover songs on banjo and at 9, Connecticut's premiere women's flat track roller derby league comes to the Cafe, and Bands and DJs will entertain. All proceeds go directly to CT roller girls league expenses. Their website is cafenine.com

NEXT Friday, the 16^th, at the Kate in Old Saybrook, The Small Town Concert Series presents a Tribute to the Grand Ole Opry: The Carter Family Years. Included are some classic Hank Williams and Jimmy Rodgers songs, thrown in for good measure. Amalgamated Muck performs, along with Clayton Allen, Paul Neri, Dana Takaki, and David “Bobo” Lavorgna. Now here's what's going on in the world of cinema in central connecticut:

At Cinestudio, the Trinity College Cinema in Hartford, tonight and Saturday, catch the academy award winner Hugo. There is a special showing at 10p tonight of Miss Representation, a documentary exposing how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. Then on Sunday, Cinestudio begins a run of Shakespeare's Richard III with Ian McClellan, set in the 1930s, as the British upper class flirts with fascism. This weekend at Real Art Ways in Hartford, catch animated film Chico and Rita, about two talented musicians who venture from Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas to unite in music and love. From 6:00 to 6:30pm 
it’s Free Speech Radio News from The Pacifica Network - An independently produced half hour daily national and international radio news program focusing on peace and social justice issues in the US and around the world. FSRN is collectively run by its workers and reporters.

At 6:30 until 7pm, listen in to The Middletown Youth Radio Project - A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 7pm to 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it

Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, featuring local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Spotlighting Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

At 1am we go

until 3am - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it's the Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry with Bob - The compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

Then, we bring you
 Sing Out! 
from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the 
BBC World News 
- a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 - Traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffe Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am 
with Francesco Fiumara
 - A weekly roundup of news, music and memories from Italy.
