Wednesday 3-11-20 Jive


Good evening, it's Wednesday, March 11th. This is the Jive at Five, o ur daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, the genre-ending band South for Winter performs on Thursday night, and on Friday you rock with blues roots with Parker’s Tangent. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by All the Write Ways: A Workshop for Self-Expression at 1 pm. Erin Earth and Cazz takes the stage Saturday night with New Orleans-style music. There’s a Reiki Level 2 class on Sunday, and you can view the current exhibition throughout the month that includes the photography of Ryan Martin Callanan and Heather Cohn. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at CafĂ© Nine, tonight/Wednesday Couchsleepers, Ports of Spain, and Among the Acres takes the stage, and on Thursday they bring you Juicebox Batter. Friday’s Happy Hour features Outlaw Unofficial Non-Sanctioned St. Pat’s Parade Hooley, and in the evening they’ve got Service Dog, Every Branch, and Pulsr.
The Saturday Jazz Jam Session is led by Gary Grippo, followed by the late show with Fate and Dose the Well. Sunday morning it’s the St. Patricks Day Parade Party with The Jovial Crew, and they round out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band Sunday night. www.cafenine.com

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, Liviu’s Invitational with a special guest comes your way on Thursday. On Friday, Bobby T’s Allstars play and on Saturday they’ve got Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Up in Hartford on Thursday, enjoy Brains & Brews Trivia at City Steam Brewery, starting at 7. Also at 7, Twang Thursdays presents Honeysuckle at Hog River Brewing Co, 1429 Park St.
On Friday, chase away the Winter Blues with singer/songwriter Kelly English from noon to 1 in the lobby of City Place 1, 185 Asylum St, and at 5:30, on the third floor of the Hartford Public Library downtown branch, there will be an opening reception for Lost in Color, an exhibition of black and white Hartford street photography by Erik Williams. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place. Details at http://www.hartford.com/events

At the Wesleyan/RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown this evening/Wednesday at 6 p.m., readers in grade 7 and higher are invited to join WESteen Readers for a monthly event featuring food and conversation about books.
Also on this evening/Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m., author Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo visits to discuss her second middle-grade novel A Galaxy of Sea Stars, about family, loyalty, and the hard choices we face in the name of friendship. On Thursday at 7 p.m., author Chad C. Betz will discuss "Late Bloomer: It’s Not Too Late To Succeed!" In Middletown, at the Russell Library, it’s Scrabble Wednesday happening at 5 p.m. Also this evening/Wednesday at 5, it’s Slime Science, for kids in grades 2 to 5.
Baby Rhyme Time happens at 10 am on Thursday. And the Russell Library Job Group also meets at 10. Later on Thursday, at 6 p.m., Books and Brews meets offsite at Stubborn Beauty Brewing to discuss Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. Also on Thursday, from 6 to 9 p.m., the library is offering a preview of its Friday-Saturday-Sunday Wicked Big Book Sale.
On Friday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. you can have your resume looked over by a certified resume reviewer. Call for an appointment: 860-347-2520. Also on Friday, from 4 to 5:30, teens are invited to explore their life goals by creating a Vision Board.

Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven this evening/Wednesday with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Emmett Kelly and Jonathan Richman with Tommy Larkins. They’re at the Space Ballroom in Hamden, starting tonight/Wednesday with Kyle Kinane’s sold-out early show and a late show; check for ticket availability. At the State House in New Haven, there’s Blacklight Glow Party Featuring Nikita, Falconeer, and Forest Room on Thursday.
On Friday, it’s Surf Night with Ninth Wave, Renegade Lounge, The Clams, and the Aquatudes. The Pist, WARXGAMES, Chem-Trails, Nightmare Solution, and World Game take the stage on Saturday, and you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday with Mickey Rickshaw, Chousand, and more on Sunday afternoon. www.statehousepresents.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is showing “Portrait of a lady on Fire,” about a forbidden affair between an 18th century aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait, through Thursday. Check their website for show times and this weekend’s screenings. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio has “Mephisto,” about a struggling actor who wins fame in pre-WWII Berlin playing Mephistopheles, through tonight/Wednesday.
On Thursday, they’re showing “And Then We Danced,” a passionate coming-of-age tale set amidst the conservative confines of modern Tbilisi, and on Friday and Saturday, they’re showing “Just Mercy,” the true story of a lawyer who represents two men on Death Row: one innocent, and one guilty. On Sunday, they open a run of “Clemency,” about a Death Row prison matron who is cracking under the horrors of her job. At 10:30 it’s The Mouth of Middletown. A half-hour talk show. A collaboration with Middletown residents to bring you developed long form radio stories about the most compelling and interesting local issues.

And at 11, Splitting Hairs comes on board with an hour of humorous musical discussion dedicated to analyzing the lyrics of popular songs, and finding their inconsistencies and comical meanings.
From midnight to 1am it's The Chef’s Special. Each week we'll cook something different, the ingredients are never the same.

And starting at 1, stay tuned for Stage Fright. Stage Fright is the island of misfit songs, old and new: b-sides, demos, and live shows welcome.

At 2am it's the Hour of Slack from Pacifica. Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others

And from 3 to 4am, third shift listeners can catch an encore presentation of our noontime broadcast of Democracy Now!

At 4am we kick off our daytime public affairs block with the BBC World Report followed by morning edition from NPR at 5am.
