Good evening, its Monday March 16^th. I’m Leith Johnson. Sadly, this is not the jive at five - With the threat of the covid-19 pandemic potentially lurking around every corner, it’s safe to say that most community activities are on hold. Today, Governor Ned Lamont ordered a shutdown of bars, restaurants, gyms and movie theaters in Connecticut. Restaurants and bars will be allowed to continue food delivery and takeout, while supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and other essential businesses will remain open

In light of these concerns and the shifting environment around us, until conditions change, The jive at five community calendar will cease. In the coming weeks, we encourage you to check with any organization or business before heading out to ensure they are open.

As we learn of services that can provide aid and be of assistance to our listeners affected by the pandemic, we will be happy to include them here. Please send your relevant announcements to jive@wesufm.org

The City of Middletown is offering free “Grab and go” breakfasts and lunches M-F between 9am-1pm, now until schools reopen. Families will be able to “grab” the day’s breakfast and lunch, to help eliminate multiple picks. Picks happen at most city schools. 860-638-1485 mealassist@mpsct.org for assistance

Here at WESU, during this crisis, we aim to continue to provide you with the same level of critical news and information by day and free form music and creative programing at night and on the weekends. While Wesleyan students are gone for the rest of the season, and many of our volunteer staff will opt to stay home for the next few weeks, WESU still has you covered. You may hear some new shows, some archived programming, and some of your favorite DJs may be need to take time off, but never fear – WESU remains here for you 24 hours a day, offering a healthy and provocative alternative to main stream media outlets.

With that said, here our line-up for tonight, here on WESU. (to the best of our ability)

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Enjoy special features and little known facts about the music and artists.

At 12:30 until 1:30am it’s Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts and know-how about the thing of the day.

Breakfast of Champions with The Gonch

What would an album eat for breakfast? Music artists consume in the making of new albums.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.

Friday 3/13/20 Jive

Good evening, it's Friday, March 13th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming, here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and '70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Despite concerns about the spread of coronavirus, there are still many events happening across the region. However, we strongly recommend that you check ahead with venues before venturing out, as many events are being cancelled or postponed. Also be sure to wash your hands and keep them to yourself!

Here's some of what's happening in our area this weekend:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown features blues rock by Parker’s Tangent tonight. The Aligned With Source workshop happens tomorrow morning followed by All the Write Ways: A Workshop for Self-Expression at 1 pm. Erin Earth and Cazz takes the stage tomorrow night with their New Orleans-style music. There’s a Reiki Level 2 class on Sunday, and you can view the current exhibition throughout the month that includes the photography of Ryan Martin Callanan and Heather Cohn. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, today’s 5pm Happy Hour features the Outlaw Unofficial Non-Sanctioned St. Pat’s Parade Hooley, and tonight they’ve got Service Dog, Every Branch, and Pulsr. The Café Nine Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is led by Gary Grippo, followed by the Saturday night main event with Fate and Dose the Well. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio is showing “Just Mercy,” the true story of a lawyer who represents two men on Death Row: one innocent, and one guilty. In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Tuesday you can catch The Mastersons and Bonnie Whitmore. Couchsleepers, Ports of Spain, and Among the Acres takes the stage on Wednesday, and on Thursday they bring you Juicebox Batter. Friday’s Happy Hour features Outlaw Unofficial Non-Sanctioned St. Pat’s Parade Hooley, and in the evening they’ve got Service Dog, Every Branch, and Pulsr.The Saturday Jazz Jam Session is led by Gary Grippo, followed by the late show with Fate and Dose the Well. At the Wesleyan/RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown this evening/Tuesday, at 7 p.m., Terence Hawkins discusses his new sci-fi novel American Neolithic. Inspired by current events, readers enter a world where America has become a Police State, drones are always watching, and the Bill of Rights has been tossed aside for new amendments.

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., readers in grade 7 and higher are invited to join WESteen Readers for a monthly event featuring food and conversation about books.

Also on Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m., author Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo visits to discuss her second middle-grade novel A Galaxy of Sea Stars, about family, loyalty, and the hard choices we face in the name of friendship. Trinity College’s Cinestudio has “Mephisto,” about a struggling actor who wins fame in pre-WWII Berlin playing Mephistopheles, through Wednesday.

Right after the Jive at Five, stay tuned for Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat from 5:05-6pm. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, blues to BeBop, novelty to New Romantic, Wonderland has a place for it.

From 6-8pm Bill Revill brings us Acoustic Blender, offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by Ashley Hamel. The genre-ending band South for Winter performs on Thursday night, and on Friday you rock with blues roots with Parker’s Tangent. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by All the Write Ways: A Workshop for Self-Expression at 1 pm. Erin Earth and Cazz takes the stage Saturday night with New Orleans-style music. There’s a Reiki Level 2 class on Sunday, and you can view the current exhibition throughout the month that includes the photography of Ryan Martin Callanan and Heather Cohn. www.buttonwood.org

On Thursday, they’re showing “And Then We Danced,” a passionate coming-of-age tale set amidst the conservative confines of modern Tbilisi, and on Friday and Saturday, they’re showing “Just Mercy,” the true story of a lawyer who represents two men on Death Row: one innocent, and one guilty. On Sunday, they open a run of “Clemency,” about a Death Row prison matron who is cracking under the horrors of her job.
