Good evening, it's Wednesday April 24th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen happens at the Buttonwood Tree this evening and Thursdays at noon, and the Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday evening. Storyteller/troubadour Don White takes the stage Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop comes your way Saturday morning, and in the afternoon Rob DeSorbo holds a Music Workshop. The Kennedys present songs and stories Saturday night, along with readings from Pete’s memoir, “Tone, Twang and Taste.” On Sunday, Sue Huggans presents a staged reading of her one-woman play, “The Way Out.”  The “Quote Project” art exhibit by C.C. In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, they bring you another session of Words & Music. Thursday’s headliners are Fiction, and James Darling and the Nuclear Heartbreak. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns, followed by the late show with Ward Hayden & The Outliers, GA-20, and Roses Wild. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and later, they’ve got pop and funk with an Iranian twist, presented by Mitra Sumara. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, the weekly Community Blues Jam tonight features Tim McDonald. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. At the State House in New Haven on Thursday, they’re bringing back the Thirsty Thursday Dance Party. They’ve got hip hop on Friday with CL Smooth, Tae, Will Traxx, and Skinee G. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts an Open Mic night on Friday, with first-come, first-serve sign-ups to read, present, perform, or sing. Help celebrate Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, where you can complete a scavenger hunt, get free audiobooks, and check out exclusive merchandise. Hally Jaeggie and Friends are at the Arch Street Tavern on Friday, and the Nick Di Maria Quartet will be at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company. Breeze Driver and Mario Beaudoin are featured at the Live Music series at the Hartford Flavor Company on Friday, and the Podunk Throwbacks are at Hanging Hills on Saturday. The Wadsworth Atheneum holds its 38th annual Fine Art & Flowers event this Friday through Sunday. It’s bebop and scat at the final performance of the Baby Grand Jazz series at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday with Giacocomo Gates. Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

The Russell Library in Middletown holds Scrabble Wednesday at 5 pm, followed by a meeting of the Connecticut Poetry Society. There’s a chamber music concert by the New World Trio on Thursday evening. A Make Time for Making workshop happens Friday morning, and there’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning. You can enjoy the art exhibit by The Art Guild of Middletown throughout the month. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown announces free events this week, starting today with Senior Talks in the History of Art. There are Senior and Graduate Recitals all week at various venues.Today, the Memoriam Lecture, by Cynthia Novack, is “That’s So Queer! That’s So Ethnic! That’s So Foreign!,” and the Reception for Senior Thesis Exhibition Week Five takes place at the Zilkha Gallery. Also, the Korean Drumming and Taiko Drumming Ensembles perform at Crowell Concert Hall. The Collegium Musicum Spring Concert is at Memorial Chapel on Thursday, or you can check out Javanese Gamelan Dance: Classical and Contemporary, at World Music Hall. The Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble perform on Friday, and the Concert Choir on Sunday, both at Crowell Concert Hall. Manic Presents is at the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk this evening with Classic Deep Purple Live with Glenn Hughes. They move on to The Space in Hamden on Thursday with Sheer Mag, The Smarthearts, and Perennial. They’ve got JOATA, 3 O’Clock Losers, and Ashley Hamel at The Space on Friday, and on Saturday they headline Terrapin. On Sunday, it’s Rubblebucket, appearing with Mikaela Davis. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Mezzo Grille hosts Emo Night Friday with Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, and more. There’s a Superhero Training Day and Run for kids on Saturday morning, and a Youth Fishing Derby, and in the evening, Wess MeetsWest, Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, Girih, and more are at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op.  The Power of Language conference, a gathering for multilingual students, happens at the Fries Center for Global Studies on the campus of Wesleyan University Friday and Saturday. The annual Daffodil Day event happens Sunday at the Wadsworth Mansion, with tours, rock painting, music, a nature walk, and more. In celebration of 80 years of community radio, WESU presents 2 lectures this week. Hip Hop artist and educator, Akua Naru will and speak on “College Radio, Women in Hip-Hop, and Black Culture in Contemporary America” this evening at 6pm and on Thursday at 6pm, Banning Eyre speaks on “Bringing Africa to American Radio,”. As part of world week for Animals in Labs, there are two protests against the animal labs at Yale. The second is scheduled for Saturday at 1pm on York St in front of the hospital.

Toad’s Place hosts D$J Presents So Far Gone: Drake Night, on Thursday.  On Friday, they headline Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime, appearing with Oogee Wawa and Ian Biggs and the Ruckus. There’s an Original Saturday Night College Dance Party this week. www.toadsplace.com

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972., through Thursday. On Friday they open “Satan & Adam,” a documentary about the power of music to forged an unlikely collaboration. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org
