Good evening, it's Wednesday, April 17th 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam featuring Peter Byron. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. On Friday, it’s roots, blues, and more with the Jim Koeppel Band. Purple Luscious Love, a Prince Tribute band, takes the stage on Saturday, and they’ve got an Easter Soul Brunch on Sunday with the Nekita Waller Soul Band http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday, you can catch the Comedy Open Mic, hosted by Dan Rice. On Thursday they’ve got Cosmos Sunshine & Righteous Continental, appearing with Nathaniel Hintz and Emily Victoria. Friday’s Happy Hour set at Café Nine features The Tommys and the Friday night main event features Driftwood, and Plywood Cowboy. Café nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday night they’ve got soul with the Freddy Deboe Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

At the College Street Music Hall tonight/Wednesday,  Manic Presents brings  Citizen Cope. The Hatebreed 25th Anniversary Tour comes to College Street Saturday, along with Obituary, Terror, Cro-Mags, and Fit For An Autopsy. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden, its more heavy duty loud rock with Acid Mothers Temple, Yamantaka, Sonic Titan, and Mountain Movers on Friday. On Saturday, at The Space Ballroom Odonis Odonis, Public Memory, and Reduction Plan take the stage. www.manicpresents.com

Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown  presents an Artist Lecture by Award-Winning Playwright and Screenwriter Rajiv Joseph in Memorial Chapel. Senior Recitals happen Friday through Sunday at various locations, and include vocal performances, a pop-up exhibit, and more. Check the website for times and locations.  www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Russell Library‘s Scrabble Wednesday kicks off at 5 pm tomorrow. That’s followed by a presentation from the Wisdom Alliance on Shinrin-Yoku, or Forest Bathing. You can take a poem home in your pocket from the library Thursday morning to celebrate Poetry Month, and Thursday evening, the Sanah Kadoura jazz quartet performs in their Jazz Up Close series at Russell Library. The library will be closed on Friday this week. You can enjoy the art exhibit by The Art Guild of Middletown throughout the month. Hartford Underground offers swing dance sessions Wednesday at Tainted, and Thursday at the Polish National Home of Hartford. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center is offering a Family Tour Thursday and Friday afternoons. On Thursday evening Chef Dorie Greenspan is at the Mark Twain Center with her new book, “Everyday Dorie.” Big Fang and Flight of Silence perform at the Hartford Flavor Company on Friday. Naturally Dogs and Cats invites you to bring the family for a picture with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, and they’ll donate proceeds to Furry Friends Foster and Rescue. Mike Suddes is Coleus brings you folk and storytelling at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company on Saturday, and the Red Rock Tavern holds Sensual Salsa sessions. Thursday, The Statehouse in New Haven features a night of Black Metal, with Blood Chalice, One Master, Death Vanish, and more. Steve Rodgers celebrates the release of his new album with friends, at The Statehouse on Friday. A mix of gypsy rock, circus punk and more comes to the Statehouse on Saturday with Bella’s Bartok, Tigerman WOAH, and Eddie Golden III. www.statehousepresents.com

Also on Thursday night, WESU invites you to the first in our three part Spring Lecture Series celebrating the 80th anniversary of WESU. Professor, author, activist and radio hero, J. Kēhaulani Kauanui, will present "Speaking of Indigenous Politics: Independent Media and the Power of Community Radio” at the Ring Family Performance Hall at 287 Washington terrace on Campus at 7 pm on April 18. info at www.wesufm.org

Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that you can hear Boyscott, Haybaby, Hit Like a Girl, and Mickey Blurr at the MAC 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op on Thursday and In celebration of 80 years of creative & thought provoking radio, WESU is proud to support The City of Middletown Commission on the Arts presentation of two world premieres of experimental music, Sunday April 20th, at Mac 650 Gallery and artist co-op. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you award-winning blues goddess Ana Popovic on Thursday. On Friday, enjoy funk, rock, and more with Max Creek. On Saturday it’s Completely Unchained, the World’s #1 Tribute Band to Van Halen. They bring you hard rock by Uli Jon Roth Sunday evening. Infinity Norfolk holds an Easter Brunch at the Bistro on Sunday. www.infinityhall.com

Toad’s Place in new haven brings you Polo G on Thursday. On Friday, they headline West End Blend, appearing with SixFoxWhiskey and Harsh Armadillo. Saturday’s headliner is WYBCx Ante-Fling, taking the stage with Mandala, Xenia Rubinos, and more.  www.toadsplace.com

Back in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree presents jazz on Friday with the Ryan Sands Trio. The Aligned with Source Workshop comes your way Saturday morning, and in the afternoon there’s a Teen Open Mic. No Fuss and Feathers takes the stage on Saturday with folk, Americana, and original songs. The “Quote Project” art exhibit by C.C. Arshagra continues through the month. www.buttonwood.org

Also in Middletown on Thursday, The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore hosts city native Jennifer Steele, author of “A House in Hunger,” in conversation with Enzo Surin, author of “A Letter of Resignation,”. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Woman at War,” a film about an environmental activist fighting the aluminum industry. “Storm Boy,” a retelling of an isolated child raising a pelican in Australia, and “Ramen Shop,” a Japanese film about broken families and noodles. Also continuing is “The Brink,” a film about Steve Bannon and the 2018 mid-term elections. On Friday they open “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues Part II of a restored version of Bernardo Bertolucci’s uncut epic “1900,” through Wednesday. On Friday and Saturday, they’re screening “Transit,” a modern-day adaptation of the WWII refugee novel, “Transit Visa.” On Sunday they open a run of “Babylon,” a film about British Jamaicans and the itinerant reggae scene during the Margaret Thatcher years.   Full details and screening times will be at  http://www.cinestudio.org/

From 2-3am, it’s The Bin with DJ Cool'd Coulee. Take a dive into the trash bin of aural history- a chill, eclectic survey of forgotten music from around the world
From 3-4am is Noize in the Attic, Where Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You. Serving Connecticut it’s hard rock fix of classic Heavy Metal as well as the latest from the genre!
And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Editionfrom NPR.
