Good evening, it's Tuesday, April 30th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen Wednesday evening and Thursday at noon. The Buttonwood Tree's long running Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta happens on Thursday evening. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with tales about “Awkward Moments.”   The 12th Annual Composers and Improvisors Festival takes place Saturday night, with special guests including jazz artist Joe Fonda. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight,  you can catch Here Lies Man and Mick’s Jaguar. Fernandito Ferrer and Renée Goust take the stage on Wednesday, and on Thursday they’ve got Eli Lev, S.G. Carlson, and Jared Knapik. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Shellye Valauskas Experience, followed by a Birthday Bash for Audra featuring Chaser Eight, The Lost Weekend, and Strange Neighbors. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Dust Hat, Honch, and Jacques Le Coque. The Sunday Buzz Matinée Snughouse, and The Girls from Ruby Falls, and they finish up the weekend in the evening with Blush and Double Winter. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday evenings. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam features Tommy Whalen. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. On Friday, the double bill includes Carl Ricci along with Neal Vitullio & The Vipers. At the State House in New Haven,  Wednesday, it’s a book party with Dr. Venezia Michalsen, who presents “Mothering and Desistance in Re-Entry.” The State House brings you latin psychedelia, punk, and more on Thursday with Combo Chimbita and Phat A$tronaut. The theme is rock and experimental on Friday with Guerilla Toss, Crag Mask, Sean Henry, and Underwear. At the Arch Street Tavern, BooYah! Wednesday features members of West End Blend and more, and they’ve got free reggae on Thursday with the Amandla Band. Eggy and Consider the Source are in the house on Friday, and you can enjoy a Star Wars-themed party on Saturday with One Time Weekend. At Little River Restoratives, The RapOet & Friends brings you Hip-Hop on Friday. On Saturday, the Butler McCook House and Garden hosts a Charter Oak & Coltsville Walking Tour, and it’s Sensual Salsa Saturdays at the Red Rock Tavern. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts and Student choreographers present their Spring Dance Concert on Friday and Saturday at the Patricelli Theater. Other events at Wesleyan this week include a South Indian Music Student Recital Wednesday at World Music Hall. On Thursday, you can enjoy a performance by the Gamelan Ensemble and Javanese Dance Ensemble, or catch the Wesleyan Chamber Music Concert at Crowell Hall.  There’s a West African Music and Steelband Concert on Friday afternoon, and the University Orchestra performs Saturday evening at Crowell concert hall. The Russell Library in Middletown holds its regular Scrabble Wednesday tomorrow at 5 pm. That's followed by a fly-fishing class and a Teen Paint session. On Thursday evening, Russell Library hosts  “Experience Hypnosis For Change.” The Library's First Fridays Book Group meets Friday evening at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga, to discuss “Tell Me More,” by Kelly Corrigan. There’s a “Planting and Growing” workshop for families on Saturday morning, and the Wesleyan String Ensemble performs at 11 a.m at the Library. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces a free Family Craft Night Thursday at 5 pm in conjunction with their Screen-Free Week offerings. There’s more on Friday, with a Cupcakes, Cookies & Canvases Under the Sea session on Friday. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Songs of Hope and Conviction, a mixed music concert sponsored by Indivisible Connecticut and featuring The Shinolas, on Sunday. At Infinity Norfolk, you can hear electric blues rock with Popa Chubby on Friday, and on Saturday they bring you Eaglemania, the an Eagles Tribute band.  www.infinityhall.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts a birthday party for Sarah on Friday with VOID, EGG, Imbroglio, Down with Rent, and more. On Saturday, it’s the Die Hipster Spring Fling, with Matt & The Marauders, The Screw-ups, VAMANOS, and more at Cherry Street. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972., through Thursday. On Friday they open “Rafiki,” a breakthrough Kenyan film about lesbian love. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Appollo 11,” a moon landing film with newly-discovered footage, through Wednesday. They’ve got Oscar-nominated short films this week, starting with Documentary on Thursday, Live Action on Friday, and Animation on Saturday. On Saturday evening they present the 8th Annual Trinity Film Festival with short films from undergraduates, and on Sunday they open a run of “Birds of Passage,” about conflict in the indigenous people of Colombia, the Wayúu. The French Film Group at the Russell Library in Middletown presents “Le hérisson,” a film about a young girl who makes an appointment with death, on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. They also sponsor the North End Action Team in screening “Growing Cities,” a film about urban farming, on Friday at 3:30 p.m. www.russelllibrary.org

11-Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

From Midnight-1am, catch (1, 3, 5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. We deep dive into a different album every show and give them the stamp of approval or the cone of shame.

From 1-2am, there’s (1, 3, 5) Road Trip with DJ G and DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists all from the same hometown. No gas money required.

From 2-3am, tune in to (1, 3, 5) What’s Goin’ On? with Sam. Focus on an artist with songs under 1,000,000 plays and deep-dive on their career and their music. Also catch music reviews.

At 3am, stay tuned for 2 hrs of funk, soul, and RnB on Up Front Soul from Sanguine Fromage from Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
