Good evening, it's Tuesday, April 30th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen Wednesday evening and Thursday at noon. The Buttonwood Tree's long running Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta happens on Thursday evening. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with tales about “Awkward Moments.”   The 12th Annual Composers and Improvisors Festival takes place Saturday night, with special guests including jazz artist Joe Fonda. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight,  you can catch Here Lies Man and Mick’s Jaguar. Fernandito Ferrer and Renée Goust take the stage on Wednesday, and on Thursday they’ve got Eli Lev, S.G. Carlson, and Jared Knapik. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Shellye Valauskas Experience, followed by a Birthday Bash for Audra featuring Chaser Eight, The Lost Weekend, and Strange Neighbors. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts and Student choreographers present their Spring Dance Concert on Friday and Saturday at the Patricelli Theater. Other events at Wesleyan this week include a South Indian Music Student Recital Wednesday at World Music Hall. On Thursday, you can enjoy a performance by the Gamelan Ensemble and Javanese Dance Ensemble, or catch the Wesleyan Chamber Music Concert at Crowell Hall.  There’s a West African Music and Steelband Concert on Friday afternoon, and the University Orchestra performs Saturday evening at Crowell concert hall. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Appollo 11,” a moon landing film with newly-discovered footage, through Wednesday. They’ve got Oscar-nominated short films this week, starting with Documentary on Thursday, Live Action on Friday, and Animation on Saturday. On Saturday evening they present the 8th Annual Trinity Film Festival with short films from undergraduates, and on Sunday they open a run of “Birds of Passage,” about conflict in the indigenous people of Colombia, the Wayúu. Good evening, it's Thursday, April 25th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:


Here in Middletown, the Middlesex Drum Circle meets this evening and Middletown's Storyteller/troubadour Don White takes the stage Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop comes your way Saturday morning, and in the afternoon Rob DeSorbo holds a Music Workshop. The Kennedys present songs and stories Saturday night, along with readings from Pete’s memoir, “Tone, Twang and Taste.” On Sunday, Sue Huggans presents a staged reading of her one-woman play, “The Way Out.”  The “Quote Project” art exhibit by C.C. In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, the headliners are Fiction, and James Darling and the Nuclear Heartbreak. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns, followed by the late show with Ward Hayden & The Outliers, GA-20, and Roses Wild. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and later, they’ve got pop and funk with an Iranian twist, presented by Mitra Sumara. The Wadsworth Atheneum holds its 38th annual Fine Art & Flowers event this Friday through Sunday. The Russell Library in Middletown holds a chamber music concert by the New World Trio this evening. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown announces free events this week. There are Senior and Graduate Recitals all week at various venues. The Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble perform on Friday, and the Concert Choir on Sunday, both at Crowell Concert Hall.
