Good evening, it's Wednesday, August 1st. This is the Jive at Five, WESU's Daily community calendar and run-down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. I’m Maria Johnson. Here in Middletown  tomorrow and every Monday through Thursday  from 10am-noon during August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome!
Also tomorrow, and every first Thursday of the month, there's an open mic with Bob Gotta, with sign ups starting at 6:30pm.
Friday night, CT native Randy Burns will be playing with The Brothers Radcliffe at the Buttonwood Tree at 8pm.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.

Down in New Haven tomorrow night it's always the weekly dubstep dance party at Toad's Place, and tomorrow also brings the alternative rock band Our Lady of Peace to the main stage at 9 pm. Friday night, rock out with Rock This Wild World, featuring Blacktop Forest, Tomorrow Just Started, The Restless and many more.  Saturday night Toads hosts the Wu Block Tour featuring Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch. Also down in New Haven tonight Hadoukan presents a local metal showcase starting at 9pm at Cafe Nine. And tomorrow brings roots group Blue Pontiac to the stage. Friday night will see Detroit punk band Tyvek along with the Frustrations. • CafĂ©  N ine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio this week. Saturday Night there will be a Luau Variety Show, and Sunday Chain and the Gang along with Human Pontiac will be taking the stage. More online at www.cafenine.co


Tonight and every Wednesday night, Black-eyed Sally's in Hartford hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! On Friday night singer-songwriters Peter Karp and Sue Foley will take the stage at Sally's, followed by Mike Law and the Playboys on Saturday night. More at www.blackeyedsallys.com


On Friday, Aug. 3rd, the Middletown Commission on the Arts and Oddfellows Playhouse present the 24th Annual Children's Circus of Science. The talented young performers will bounce around like molecules in an atom, explore the elements of fire, earth, air and water, and of course there will be a mad scientist or two. The circus will explore a range of scientific subjects all the way from the dinosaurs and marine biology to string theory. Famous scientists -- or famous-scientist clowns -- will also appear. The circus will begin at 5 p.m. at Macdonough School at 66 Spring St., Middletown.

This Saturday there will be a FREE family friendly one-day Festival of Caribbean Food, Music, Games and Traditions at the Riverfront Plaza in Downtown Hartford. Live entertainment will include Leroy Sibbles, Calypso Rose, Anthem, the St. Lucia Folk Singers, Orquestra Espada, Junior Holt, Toussaint Liberator, Don Minot and many more. more information at tastct.org

Saturday morning at 11, The Russell Knitters meet and work at The Russell Library here in Middletown. All are welcome to share their expertise and experience. More online at www.russelllibrary.org

ARTFARM presents Shakespeare Everywhere! The Compleate Work this Sunday, August 5th at 5pm in the Cedar Grove at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. The event, hosted by Chion Wolf, is the culmination of a month-long series of guerilla Shakespeare performances. Shakespeare scenes, monologs and songs plus live music and stories.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grove overlooking the Connecticut River Valley.

 Speaking of farms, ‘tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers' Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St,  from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is now open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.

Tonight through Thursday, Real Art Ways in Hartford will continue its run of the documentary 'Paul Williams: Still Alive.' Starting on Friday, Real Art Ways will begin a viewing of 'The Queen of Versailles' an epic documentary following billionaires Jackie and David and their rags to riches story. After that, from 6 to 6:30, it's Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network, your daily dose of alternative international news and reporting from the Pacifica Network.

Then, from 6:30-8pm, it's Fusion Radio with James Fusion, featuring Techno from around the globe mixed live since 1992. It's a vinyl world!

After that, from  8-9:30pm, stay tuned for The Warehouse with Mike Nyce, the best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

That will be followed from 9:30-11pm byThe Vault with DJ Anton Banks, on the air since 1995!, presenting listeners with the very latest in underground electronica on vinyl format, so the music can be heard as it was intended. Regularly featuring exclusive sets from international producers and DJs.

And then, from 11pm-1230am it's Midnight Munchies with DJ Gus Lo, the below-ground street music your ears have been craving.

From 12:30-1:30am, it's Search and Recover with DJ Cheshire Cat, who scours the world of music to find as many versions of a single song as possible. Join the exploration of the modern musical standards!

And then, from 1:30-4am, it's The Graveyard with DJ Otto Nation, an eclectic mix of music from the WESU collection of new releases.

That's followed by  the BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM and we begin tomorrow's broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
