Monday August 6th jive

Good evening, it's Monday, August 6th. This is the Jive at Five, WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. Here in Middletown Mondays through Thursdays  from 10am-noon during July and August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome! 
Every Monday night, J-CHERRY hosts the ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC AT THE BUTTONWOOD TREE.  Signups begin at 7:30pm and Performances start at 8:00. 
Also at the Buttonwood Tree this Thursday night every possible pathway of story, culture, and true grit meets at Writers Out Loud!—Connecticut’s premier literary prose open mic w/host Cocomo Rock & co-host Al Bower, Jr. with signups at 6:45 and performances beginning at 7:15.
Friday night at 8 come down to the Buttonwood Tree to hear the soulful sounds of the young jazz group Mad Satta.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.

Tonight(Monday) and every Monday night down in New Haven, Rohn Lawrence and Friends make smooth jazz on the lily pad stage at Toad's Place. Wednesday is always the weekly dubstep dance party, and Thursday is the local hip hop showcase. Friday night jam out with the Reggae/Jam Fest 2012 including performances by Father Time, Full Spectrum and more.  Saturday night Toads hosts Summer Glow with speakers booming out electro, dubstep and house music all night long. Also down in New Haven tonight at Cafe Nine, there will be an early show at 7 featuring the Harris Brother's Band Balkan Jam Session followed by an acoustic open mic with Miss Kriss at 10. Tomorrow night Gatehouse Music presents the Saint James Jazz Band at 8. Wednesday night there will be some countrified rock with performances by Northbound Country and DNG. Thursday brings Atrina's turbulent rock n' roll sound to the stage, and Friday Night will see Jazz Haven at 8 followed by Les Sans Culotte; w/ the Shelly Valauskas Experience at 10. • CafĂ© nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by Gary Grippo and Friends. Saturday Night River City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs; w/ Otis and the Hurricanes take the stage, and Sunday at 9 Tauk delivers a unique blend of funk, jazz, pop and rock with a fresh, experimental spirit.More online at cafenine.com

The Middletown Commission on the Arts present their annual Summer Sounds concert series on the City's South Green (Union Park) on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Tomorrow night features Shack, a rock/jazz/pop quartet. More information at arts2go.org.   
On Thursday at 6:30 pm, Klekolo World Coffee is presenting In Pursuit of Some Things Trivial, where people will be split into teams of 2-4 and have their knowledge tested. Prizes will be given out to the top two teams.

The Hartford Jazz Society brings live jazz every Monday night at 6 pm to Bushnell Park followed by a jam session at Blackeyed Sallys.
On Tuesday nights in Hartford, you can catch  Mike Palin’s “Other orchestra” an 18 piece big band live on stage at Black-eyed Sally’s.  Every Wednesday night Sally's hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! On Friday night Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen will take the stage at Sally's, followed by Ryan Hartt & the Blue Hearts Saturday at 9. More at blackeyedsallys.com



‘Tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers' Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St,  from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.

Here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path herein central CT this week. 
Tonight and Tomorrow,  Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford,  will be finishing its run of the 1977 classic Woody Allen movie, Annie Hall. Opening Wednesday and running through Next Tuesday, Cinestudio, will be presenting a digitally restored version of Jean Renoir's 1937 film, Grand Illusion. Tomorrow night through next Wednesday, Real Art Ways in Hartford will begin a viewing of Trishna, a modern take on the classic novel Tess of the D'Ubervilles. On Friday, Real Art Ways will continue the viewing of 'The Queen of Versailles' an epic documentary following billionaires Jackie and David and their rags to riches story. at 8:00 Lord Lewis presents:  the Rumpus Room for 90 minutes of scorching vintage and contemporary heavy funk, soul, club jazz, reggae, ska, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

At 9:30 Tom Gatzen presents a 2 hr weekly dose of loud and heavy music on Aaargh!!
From 11:30 - 12:30 Anvil Isle presents a musical monsoon of alternative rock, blues, dream, funk, hard rock, indie, punk, reggae, surf, and world music inviting you to bury your feet in the sand and hear the waves come crashing through your speakers.
From 12:30-3:00 Psychedelic Rick presents the late night Summer Concert Series featuring live concerts in their full glory. 
From 3-4am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio features an hour of international loud rock and punk.
The BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM and we begin tomorrow's broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
