Good evening, it's Wednesday July 19th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, the jazz quartet BadSlax takes the stage Friday evening, and on Saturday morning it’s the weekly Aligned With Source Workshop. East meets West Saturday night when new singer/songwriters Naomi Wachira and Lara Herscovitch join forces.  The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning at 10:30. http://buttonwood.org/

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine tonight,  you can catch Crunk Witch, Ceschi, and more. Thursday’s headliners include Mechanical Peaches, Mount Pocono, and Hard Luxury. Friday’s Happy Hour is with DW Ditty, followed by the night show with Crown Colony, Dutty Winehouse, Dangerous Animals, and Flight of Silence. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, followed by the late show featuring Tony Trischka’s Early Roman Kings: The Music of Bob Dylan, and Five in the Chamber. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Porter Block and Lines West, and they round out the weekend with Las Cafeteras, Fernandito Ferrer, and Jose Oyola on Sunday night. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the  Wednesday Community Blues Jam hosts Tommy Whalen this week. On Thursday it’s Friend Zone bringing you world music and a jam session with dancing. On Friday they’ve got the bluesman from Italy, Roberto Morbioli. Saturday’s headliner is Duppy Conquerors, the Bob Marley tribute band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/
Friday, Manic Presents brings Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden. On Saturday, they’re back at College Street with Felly, Byyps & The Mermaid Gang, Trip Carter, and Sol Was DJ. http://www.manicpresents.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on Friday it’s the Masquerade Glow Party with two rooms of music and free Glow goods. Saturday’s bill has Shakedown plating The music of The Grateful Dead and Beyond, Just Winging It, and more. www.toadsplace.com


Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your own mat. Then there’s Thursday Nights on the Plaza, with free music and more, all on the Plaza. www.riverfront.org

At the Russell Library this week,  they’re screening “Hidden Figures“ this evening/Wednesday in their And The Oscar Goes To. . . series. Connecticut’s Kid Governor visits the library on Thursday afternoon, and they hold a Job Group and Public Speaking for Teens as well. Cultural Connections, a women’s networking group for immigrants, meets on Friday afternoon.  On Saturday morning they continue the hands-on fiddling tutorial sponsored by the Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddlers Club. The Music at the Mansion series continues this evening/Wednesday at 6:30 at the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown, with this week’s featured artists, the club and dance band Locomotion. Artfarm of Middletown continues its summer Shakespeare in the Grove series this evening/Wednesday at the Middlesex Community College, with performances through Sunday at 8 pm. This year’s offering is “Hamlet.” Details at www.artfarm.org

The Connecticut Historical Society Outdoor Concert series presents the work of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program, and brings you the music and dance of Peru this Thursday at 6 pm with Negrura Peruana at their Hartford Location. Details at www.chs.org

Cherry St. Station in Wallingford brings you Hollow Earth, Hang Your Cross and city of Iron this Thursday. On Friday, the bill’s got Rozamov, HUSH, Blood Sun Circle, and Burrows.  It’s a two-day, indoor/outdoor special event on Saturday and Sunday with the Posidemic ‘Ntertainment Anniversary Show 2017 bringing you more than twenty bands. https://www.facebook.com/CherryStreetStation/

The Sounds of Summer free concert series is back at the Great River Park in East Hartford starting this Thursday at 6 pm. This week’s featured performer is the Al Fenton Big Band, bringing you big band versions of jazz and blues. Details at www.riverfront.org

At Infinity Hall in Hartford, you can enjoy alternative rock and jazz fusion on Thursday with The Werks, appearing with special guest The Juicy Grapes. On Friday, it’s Tim Currie’s Motown Review. There’s an Opening Reception at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown this Friday at 5 pm for their new Tribal Jewelry Show. Meet the jewelers and view the works that express the artistic diversity of the world. www.wesleyanpotters.com

The state’s professional ballet company brings you free classical, contemporary, and jazz ballets this Saturday at 6:30 pm at Elizabeth Park in Hartford. A talk-back with dancers and the artistic director follow the performance. Rain date is Sunday. Details at www.connecticutballet.org

Connecticut’s Farmers Markets offer an opportunity to enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Open now are: Middletown’s North End Farmers Market on Friday’s from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, as well as Middletown’s long running market on the south green on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 1pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Letters from Baghdad,” a documentary about the British spy and explorer Gertrude Bell. Also continuing is “Lost in Paris,” a hilarious story of finding love in the City of Lights. Their Afternoon Movie series offering is “The Hero,” about an aging Western icon facing a life-changing event. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Food Evolution,” a documentary about the controversy surrounding GMO’s and food. Details & screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “A Kind of Loving,” a working-class person’s love story starring Alan Bates, through Thursday. Their National Theatre Live series presents Pulitzer Prize-winner “Angels in America Part One; Millennium Approaches,” on Thursday and Sunday. On Friday they open “Endless Poetry,” an autobiographical tale from Chilean Renaissance director Alejandro Jodorowsky. It runs through the weekend. http://www.cinestudio.org/

In Middletown, the Russell Library continues its Summer Film Series, And the Oscar Goes To. . ., on Wednesday with two screenings of “Hidden Figures. ” www.russelllibrary.org

This Saturday in Middletown, The Mayoral Youth Cabinet in partnership with the City of Middletown and Wesleyan University present The Incredibles as their third showing of the summer Films on Foss series. The film will begin at 8:30pm (or shortly after depending on the time of the sunset) but will be preceded by a community picnic that starts at 7:00pm with games and food trucks available.
As the name states, the films are shown on Wesleyan’s campus at Foss Hill, just off Wyllys Ave (for GPS purposes you can enter 45 Wyllys Ave, Middletown, CT 06459).

The Hartford Free Movies in the Parks series brings you “Princess  Bride” this Friday at 8 pm at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. www.riverfront.org

Right after The Jive at Five stay tuned for an hour of Latin music from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, starring Isabel.
6-6:30pm it's Your Mind Matters with Helen Evrard MD. We explore the brain conditions known as mental illness from a holistic viewpoint with guests who study them, treat them, or are affected by them.

And from 6:30-8pm, stay tuned for Fusion Radio with James Fusion. The original ... and still the best damn Techno mix on radio!

Starting at 8 and running until 9:30pm, it's The Warehouse with Mike Nyce. The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

From 9:30-11pm, it's  The Vault with DJ Anton Banks. Presenting listeners with the latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house, and leftfield mixed live.

From 11 to 4am it's Studio 54, starring Franco, playing all of those disco hits from the 1970's!
The BBC World News comes on board at 4am followed at 5 with Morning Edition from NPR.
