Good evening, it's Friday, December 30th, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s scheduled in the community this weekend.
In Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree tonight at 8 it’s a new original Coconuts-Comedy Rocks show. Saturday at 3 they host a program for peace and spiritual renewal at the gazebo at Harbor Park, Middletown, led by Andrew Prue. Details @ buttonwood.org

New Haven's Cafe Nine features The Tommy’s for this evenings 5pm early set, followed later by Savage World, Sperm Donor, and Cyperna.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session at 4 is with Billy Cofrances, after which they finish out the year with the Great Gatsby New Year’s Eve Burlesque Cabaret. At Toad’s Place in New Haven tonight it's Badfish – 40 oz. to Xmas, along with Something Simple, Ian Biggs, and Lucid Empire. Their Shakedown New Year’s Eve Extravaganza on Saturday headlines Off the Dome and Skanktones. Details @ toadsplace.com

In Hartford tonight Black-Eyed Sally’s presents a double bill featuring Gravitonik, with rock favorites, and Bonsai Trees, an indie rock band from Glastonbury. Saturday’s New Year’s Eve Celebration headlines The Mighty Soul Drivers. Details @ blackeyedsallys.com 

Infinity Hall in Hartford presents Riders on the Storm, the Ultimate Doors Tribute Band, tonight. To close out your year they’ve got two performances by Tower of Power on Saturday, both opened by Brian Dunne. Details @ infinityhall.com

First Night Hartford is back for its 28th year of celebrations on Saturday with food, music, museum tours and much more. Fireworks will pop at 6 pm and midnight. Admission is free and the event is family-friendly. Details @ firstnighthartford.org

The Polish National Home’s Roaring Twenties New Year’s Eve Gala happens on Saturday at 8 pm at their Charter Oak Avenue location in historic Hartford. Enjoy dinner and the music of the Mark Fusco Band. Details @ PolishHomeCT.org

You can bring in 2017 with a visit to the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown which hosts their annual Open House on Sunday from 1-4 pm. Enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, refreshments, and music by Horizon Blue. Details @ wadsworthmansion.com

You can enjoy the Holiday Light Fantasia in Goodwin Park in Hartford throughout the season. Proceeds benefit Channel 3 Kids Camp. Details @ holidaylightfantasia.org

The City of Hartford's seventh annual Winterfest continues through Saturday. Enjoy free ice skating at Bushnell Park. Details @ winterfesthartford.com

Hartford’s Real Art Ways ends the run of “The Brand New Testament,” a French comedy about a contemporary God and his family who live in a high-rise apartment in Brussels, with matinee showings Saturday and New Year's Day. “The Eagle Huntress,” a documentary about a thirteen-year-old girl who becomes the first female in her family to train for an eagle hunting festival in Mongolia continues through January 5^th. Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 7pm, it'll be Al Robinson & Deni Young with Free Talk Radio.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

From 11:30pm until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the 
BBC World News 
- a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
