12-9-16 Jive

Good evening listeners, it's December 9th and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica during daytime programming, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. On weeknights and weekends, our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming. I’m Elena Harriss-Bauer.

Tonight, The Mattabesset String Collective, a five-piece string band, plays an eclectic mix of bluegrass, blues, country and rock at The Buttonwood Tree. Saturday morning at 10:30, Anniata Gandhy’s holds her weekly workshop, Aligned with Source. Saturday afternoon at 1pm, the Middlesex Music Academy Student Recital will take the Buttonwood Stage. Saturday night, Pesky J Nixon offers compelling harmonies and narratives backed by disparate instrumentation including accordion, mandolin, tribal percussion, and more. The Hearing Voices Network meets at the Buttonwood on Mondays at 10:30 am.

Fridays Weekly wind down an early set at 5pm featuring The Buttondowns.  Don Dilego and Tha Backyard Committee take the stage at 9pm tonight as the main event at Café Nine.   Saturday’s weekly Jazz Jam Session features Gary Grippo and Friends this week. Saturday night, it’s a triple bill featuring The James Mauri 4, Fiction, and Crown Colony.  The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you ANDREW BIAGIARELLI and TONY REGETS. Sunday night, Café Nine welcomes AUDREY CAMPBELL, MARIE PINETTE, DANNY HENRY, and Joe Stalsworth.

This evening, Café Nine presents FLUX CAPACITOR W/ RHYTHM INC for a night of genre bending electronic rock and roll.  Saturday night you can catch the Jay Willie Blues Band with James Montgomery.

It’s a busy time at Wesleyan University Center for the Arts as they wrap up the Fall semester. Tonight The Capstone Theater Production: THE SELF will run several times in Wesleyan’s Patricelli Theater.  THE SELF is an exploration in performing one’s own life, wherein a seven-person ensemble will tell personal stories. Wesleyan’s Winter Dance Concert happens on Saturday at 8pm in the CFA Theater.
Infinity Hall Norfolk Tim Reynolds and Will Bradford take the stage tonight, and there’s a John Denver Christmas concert with Chris Collins and Boulder Canyon. Tonight also features Delta Rae with Special Guests Penny & Sparrow. John Pizzarelli takes the Infinity Hall Hartford Stage Saturday night.

Jazz Up Close With  Godwin Louis will be in the Hubbard room of the Russell Library Sunday at 2pm.

The Holiday Light Fantasia in Goodwin Park in Hartford is up and running. Proceeds benefit Channel 3 Kids Camp. Details at

Friday evening, The Charter Oak Cultural Center presents an opening reception and artist Q&A for Let Me See That Body: Julia DePinto from 6-8pm.

Wesleyan Potters' 61st Annual Exhibit & Sale of fine crafts opens today, featuring pottery, jewelry, sculpture, fiber arts, wood, paper crafts, photography, printmaking, toys and more. This year's Exhibit is themed "Star Light Winter Bright", 

Sunday you are invited to join the Middletown Symphonic Band to celebrate the holidays with new and old favorites at their concert at South Congregational Church from 2-5pm.  A reception will follow the concert. 
here in Middletown on Sunday at 3pm, Vintage players presents a stage production of “Love Letters” starring accomplished actors John Basinger and Carolyn Kirsch.   All proceeds benefit the Children's Programs of Oddfellows Playhouse. Also in Middletown at 4:00 PM this coming Sunday, First Church will host a CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS CONCERT.  The concert is free and open to the public and features traditional and classical, as well as Gospel and spiritual selections. Christmas readings and carol singing add to the mix; and a reception and "mini" Holly Fair will follow the concert.  For additional information visit

Here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut: 
Through this Sun day, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of Deconstructing The Beatles: The White Album, along with Girl Asleep + Pickle. Saturday and Sunday offer Little Sister, A Man called Ove, and mifune: The Last Samurai. Also now on screen is Seasons, offering exceptional footage of animals in the wild, and recounting the long and tumultuous shared history that binds humankind to the natural world.

Trinity College’s Cinestudio features Don’t Think Twice this evening through Saturday, and War Horse and Elevator to the Gallows on Sunday.   

And here’s what’s on the air tonight on WESU Middletown:

Right after the Jive At Five from, it'll be Wild Wild Live with Michelle & Alex covering the Wesleyan music scene. 

From 6:30 to 7pm, catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly program featuring the thoughts, voices, and talent of kids in the WESU neighborhood.

7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Through 10pm, we’ve got From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs.   
from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Commotion the Music Mixologist provise a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle blending R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

From 11:30 until 12:30am follow DJ MosDefNot & Hyphy Down the Lineage, taking the "Oh Geez" out of the OGs.
until 3am Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

From 3 to 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.
