Here's a rundown of what's happening in our area this week:
On Tuesday evenings, here in Middletown at Harbor Park, you can catch the Summer Sounds Weekly Concert Series overlooking the CT River. Concerts are free and open to the public and begin at 7pm. Rain venue is South Church. Details at www.arts2go.org
Tonight (Tuesday), at the Russell Library in Middletown, there’s a Cultural Connections Women’s Group on Wednesday at 5:30, welcoming immigrant women. English fluency not required. There’s Teen Art Bootcamp on Wednesday at 6, and at 6:30 they offer Teen Tech Help. You can bring your devices and have teens teach you how. On Thursday they have Fairy and Gnome Houses for All Ages at 6, and the Veterans Writing Group meets on Thursday at 7. Tonight, down in New Haven at Café Nine, you can catch Pleasure Gap, Du Vide, Stuffed Up, and Straight to VHS. On Thursday Fond Han takes the Café Nine stage, appearing with Pug. The 5 pm Set on Friday features Calvin Decutlass, Stephanie Harris Austin, and Paul Panamarenko, Café Nines Friday night main event features The Batture Boys, and Joe Flood. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and later on Saturday they headline Vinyl Cape, appearing with Ceschi, ZakG, and more. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s the Community Blues Jam, hosted by Gene Donaldson this week. It’s more jazz on Thursday with the West Hartford Jazz Jam led by Pete McGuiness. Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways has extended their run of “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” a combination road comedy/coming-of-age film about a foster child being raised in the New Zealand countryside. Also continuing is “The Kind Words,” an Israeli comedy following Jewish siblings on a road trip to learn about their real father. Both run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Life, Animated,” the story of how a challenged young boy and his family discover a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in classic animated Disney films. Also opening is “Little Men,” a contemporary story of life-defining friendships that develop in the midst of familial turmoil. Both run through the weekend. www.realartways.org
