Here in Middletown, at the Buttonwood Tree, tonight (Tuesday), The Connecticut Songwriter Association Presents: a Songwriters Workshop with Nationally known career coach Deb Russell of "The Artist's Edge" presenting a workshop on "Effective Use of Social Media. Friday The Omar Tamez Fantasia Quartet Presents an evening of Improvisation, composition, Jazz. Saturday morning, The Buttonwood offers a morning class of Transitional Tai Chi at 9:15. Saturday evening, Artists Supporting Artists and The Buttonwood present The Soul Harmony Show from 8-10pm Middletown CT. http://buttonwood.org/
  

Also here in Middletown, tonight, the Russell Library at 7pm, Russell Readers will discuss “By the River” by Joyce Carol Oates. The Veteran’s writing group meet Thursday nights at 7pm. Also at 7pm this Thursday, Resonant Motion, Inc. presents the second event of “Spanning Generations”, the 2016 Jazz Up Close series on Thursday, at 7:00 pm in the Russell Library’s Hubbard Room featuring Guitarist/vocalist Monnette Sudler Philadelphia to perform in a trio featuring bassist Henry Lugo and pianist/series curator Noah Baerman. www.russelllibra ry.org


Tonight, down in New Haven at Café Nine, Fernando Pinto Presents: CARL VERHEYEN and Glenn Roth.  Tomorrow (Wednesday), THE VOODOO FIX stops by Café Nine to share a bill with  Paul Bryant Hudson, Chaser Eight, and Glamour Assassins. Thursday, at Café Nine, Manic Productions Presents JAIMOE'S JASSSZ BAND.  Paul Gabriel opens that show.  Café Nine’s early 5pm set on Friday, features THE BUTTONDOWNS. Later Friday night, Cafe Nine presents WOODY PINES and The Suitcase Junket.   Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, this week at 4:30pm. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, On Tuesday evenings, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra works out new material on the Sally’s stage.Wednesday nights B;lackeyed Sally’s features one of New England’s longest running blues open mics, GENE DONALDSON hosts this week.  Friday night CARL RICCI & 706 UNION AVE take the Sally’s stage.  Saturday brings the 17th Annual BLACK-EYED & BLUES MUSIC FESTIVAL to Bushnell Park, in Hartford, from 2:00pm – 11pm. The event is free and open to the public and features: Max Creek & Spiritual Rez, The Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez, Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers, and Mighty Soul Drivers. .Saturday night, back at the club, Sally’s presents a night of Reggae with The Equalites.www.blackeyedsallys.com

This week brings more loud music to Cherry Street Station in Wallingford. Wednesday night you can catch Youth League @ 7PM. This Friday brings Shakespeare goes to Italy!, a fundraising event on the rooftop garden of Middletown’s Community Health Center to support the 11th Season of ARTFARM’s Shakespeare in the Grove. The event features Italian wines, hors d’oeuvres, live Italian music, selections from this summer’s production, good company and the spectacular view of Middletown, the Arrigoni Bridge and the Connecticut River Valley from the sustainable gardens on the fifth floor of the Health Center. "Shakespeare Goes To Italy" will run from 7 - 9 pm on Friday, June 17. For information, email info@art-farm.org



Now, here's a rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of Eva Hess, a documentary about the German-born American artist. Also on screen through Thursday at Real Art Ways is, “Wedding Doll”.  This Israeli film tells the story of Hagit, a young woman with mild mental deficiency, who works in a toilet-paper factory.  For one day only, this Wednesday evening, Real Art Ways presents “Time to Choose” from oscar-winning documentary director Charles Ferguson, who turns his lens to address global climate change in a new film showing the breadth of the climate challenge. Saturday, Real Art Ways presents a double feature of “Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation,” along with director Eric Zala in person to tell the amazing story of this legendary movie.  www.realartways.org 

Through Thursday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio is showing Eye in the Sky, featuring Alan Rickman in his last onscreen role with Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul. Friday night, Cinestudio opens a run of BELLADONNA OF SADNESS.   www.cinestudio.org for details. 


Now here's what's on the air tonight on WESU

for Right after the Jive, Stay tuned for three hours of   Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill, for an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

From 8-9pm The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry is a weekly show featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music.

From 9-10:30pm it’s time for Radio Obscura, who’s hosts claim your eyes won’t believe what you hear on their show.

At 10:30 it’s an hour of underground hip hop with DJ Malik-1Fam  (sounds like Muh-leek – One – Fam) on Underdog’s Edge.

At 11:30 Upfront Soul with Sanguine Fromage offers Funk, soul, and jazz, plus sprinklings of R&B, gospel, and hip-hop for two hours until RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard, from 1:30-2:30am.

At 2:30 stay tuned for All Mixed Up with Peter Bochan from Pacifica Presenting a collage of great music and current events soundbites.

BBC World report comes your way at 4 am and we begin tomorrow’s broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
