Now, here’s a rundown of what's happening in our area this week: 

Here in Middletown, tonight (Wednesday) brings the Connecticut Poetry Society Monthly meeting to the Russell Library’s Hubbard Room at 6pm.  The Veteran’s writing group meets at the Library on Thursday nights at 7pm. www.russelllibrary.org

The Middletown Scottish Country Dancers meet every Wednesday at First Church on Court St. in Middletown Call 860-347-0278 for details

Tonight also brings the first public forum for the Middletown on the Move project, which aims to get the community involved with reclaiming brownfields for public use.  Middletown residents are encouraged to participate. Tonight, down in New Haven at Café Nine, you can catch PAPERWHITE with special guests Cheerleader and Mission Zero. Tomorro/Thursday at Café Nine you can catch a night if indie rock with The Color Orange, Lea, and Spectral Fangs.  Café Nine’s early 5pm set on Friday, features SHELLYE VALAUSKAS & DEAN FALCONE. Later on Friday night, Cafe Nine presents a night of hardcore rock with Intercourse, heavy breath, MouthBreather, and MudSkipper. Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with George Baker & Friends this week and it begins at 4:30pm. Saturday evening, at Café Nine Twin Lakes Records presents a Willie Nelson Songbook tribute featuring Frank Critelli, Elisa Flynn, Lys Guillorn, Mercy Choir, No Line North, Brian Slattery and more.  “The Sunday Buzz“Matinee presented by Cygnus Radio & Cafe 9 features THE SAINT JAMES TRIO for a 3pm set this week.  Sunday evening, Café Nine Stage features a night of alternative hip hop featuring JE DOUBLE F, OLD SELF, ZAK G, THE FOREST ROOM, and JULES BAXTER. www.cafenine.com

At Bar in New Haven, tonight (weds), Manic Productions presents Fred Thomas (of Saturday Looks Good To Me). Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight their weekly Wednesday night community blues jam will be hosted by Tim McDonald. Friday night, Black Eyed Sally’s presents Ryan Hartt & the Blue Hearts for a night of West coast, Chicago, and Texas tinged blues. Saturday night, brings KIM LOGAN- W/ SPECIAL GUEST MATT HAECK for a night of dirty blues, classic country, and rock ‘n’ roll.  www.blackeyedsallys.com

Tomorrow/Thursday night in Middletown, the Middlesex Drum Circle gathers at The Buttonwood Tree.  Friday night brings Carrie Johnson & Julia Russo sharing a bill with Belle of the Fall.  After both groups perform separately, they will join forces for a closing set.  On Saturday morning, The Buttonwood offers a morning class of Transitional Tai Chi at 9:15 am followed by the Aligned with Source meditation at 10:30am. This Saturday evening, The Buttonwood presents The Uri Shaham - Mark Kaplan Quartet for a night of creative takes on the Jazz song book.http://buttonwood.org/

Also here in town at Oddfellows Playhouse, The Junior and Teen Rep Company actors continue their production of The Wiz! Performances are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday nights, this week, at 7 pm. Back down in New Haven at Toad’s Place, Thursday evening, JADAKISS  and BEANIE SIGEL stop by perform on the main stage.  AceIsWorking and ANoyd opening the show.. Friday night SHAKEDOWN plays the THE DEAD AND BEYOND at Toad’s Place. Friday and Saturday night bring dance parties to Toads.www.toadsplace.com

The Middletown Symphonic Band will open its 2016 outdoor concert series with a program of patriotic music as part of the Riverfront Recapture Concert Series. The concert will be held in the amphitheater at Great River Park, in East Hartford, beginning at 7 PM on Saturday, (Rain Date: Sunday, May 29). You are invited to watch and enjoy music to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend while overlooking the Connecticut River. Admission is free. Details at http://middletownsymphonicband.org.

This weekend brings more loud music to Cherry Street Station in Wallingford. Friday night’s bill features punk , death, and thrash metal from 4 acts ThanOnauT,  Shallow Ground ,  Minotaur's Redemption, and  RÖÄRGH. Saturday night’s event features Inspired To Expire , I within I , My Hamartia, Destination Dimension , Open The Nile , and Mothman Apparatus.  Sunday brings an outdoor Memorial Day metal matinee to Cherry Street Station. Black River Union,  Kings Of Nothing,Ditch Wizard, APE!  and Formed From Anger  fill the bill!  Find Cherry Street Station on Facebook or call (203) 265-2902 for info. 

Here in Middletown this Sunday The Cypress Grill on South Main Street celebrates their 90th anniversary with live music starting at noon. Learn more by calling 860 346 3367.

The City of Middletown and the Middletown Council of Veterans will be sponsoring the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30, 2016. The theme this year is "Honoring Gulf War Veterans."

The parade will start after the Middletown Vietnam War Vets Chapter conducts their annual 9am wreath-laying ceremony at on The Washington Street Veteran's Green Memorial.

The Main Street parade will start around 10:30 am at Spring and Main Street, move south on Main Street to Union Green at Pleasant and Main Street. There will be a ceremony on Union Green after the parade.

Now here's a rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways, is now showing Sonic Sea, a film about protecting life in our waters from the destructive effects of oceanic noise pollution. Representatives from the Cetacean Society International will be on hand before and after each screening to educate, advocate and answer questions about the marine environment.  Friday, Real Art Ways begins a run of Our Last Tango, which  tells the life and love story of Argentina’s most famous tango dancers Maria Nieves Rego and Juan Carlos Copes, who met as teenagers and danced together for nearly fifty years until a painful separation.   www.realartways.org 

Tonight in Hartford, Trinity College’s Cinestudio, begins their run of Richard Linklater’s Golden Globe-winning comedy, Everybody wants some.  Sunday, Cinestudio kicks off their annual LGBT film festival which runs all week and kicks off with a presentation of short films by men =,on Sunday. From 6:30-8pm its Fusion Radio with James Fusion  - for a 90 minute live techno mix.

At 8m Mike Nyce keeps the beat going with his 90 minute live mix of deep underground house music on The Warehouse .

9:30-11pm WESU keeps the Electronic Dance music going with DJ Berk’s  N.E. Tempo featuring Dubstep, Drum n Bass, techno, ragga jungle, and breakbeats mixed live.

At 11pm Jack Sullivan is in the house for 2 hours bringing you a free form mix of music.

From 1-3am, stay tuned for Back Down the Bayou a Louisiana and roots music show featuring Baton Rouge Blues, New Orleans funk, indigenous jazz and a whole lot more.

At 3 am it’s time for The Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry

The compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

At 4am you can cath the BBC world report before we kick off tomorrow’s program with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
