Tonight, at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s Groove Jam and Super Foods, with treats, chants, and world music at The Buttonwood Tree. On Friday, the Buttonwood offers Joe Flood and Bill Gross, with Americana roots music, harmonica, and more. The Aligned with Source Workshop series continues Saturday morning, with this week’s theme being Define & Embrace Your True Self. Saturday evening it’s O.K. – Olivia King, a singer/songwriter and dancer with an R&B/NeoSoul sound. Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday at about 1 p.m. Help prepare the meal at First Church on Court Street at 11:30. Friday night at Café Nine Uncle Sonny, Circle//Circle, headline a 9pm bill. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session, at Café Nine, is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends at 4:30. Up in Hartford, Black-eyed Sally’s tonight they showcase some of the CT Now Grand Band Slam winners. On Friday it’s Spiritual Rez, bringing you a reggae funk dance experience. Saturday they host the 16th annual Black-eyed & Bluesfest starting at 4 in Bushnell Park, with music, craft beers, southern food, and more. Musical acts for the festival include Orb Mellon, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, Brandon Santini, The Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Balkun Brothers, and Big Mean Sound Machine. www.blackeyedsallys.com
Tonight Manic Productions brings Reel Big Fish & Less Than Jake come to the College Street Music Hall in New Haven. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, they continue their run of the comedy “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window & Disappeared” through tomorrow. Also continuing is “I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story,” a documentary of the man who has been Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for over four decades. On Friday they open “The Yes Men Are Revolting,” which chronicles the activists currently targeting the climate change issue. They also open the Sundance Film Festival Award-winning shorts of 2015. Both run through the weekend. There’s also a weekend screening of “When Marnie Was There,” an animated parable about friendship and emotional repair. www.realartways.org
Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues its run of “About Elly,” an Iranian drama about middle class citizens trying to adapt to strict Islamic laws, through tomorrow. On Friday they open “Juaja,” starring Viggo Mortensen in a drama about a Danish engineer who sets out to find this magical city in Argentina in the 1880’s. It runs through the weekend.
