I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow: are you tired of religious strife?  We talk to two people who, on one small patch of the planet -- Wesleyan University --  are trying to create understanding among people of different faiths. The protestant chaplain Rev. Tracy Mehr-Muska and junior Lydia Ottaviano, who leads an interfaith group, will talk about the challenges of creating peace, love and understanding. Can't listen live? Now how here’s some of what’s happening in our area this week:

Tonight, at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s the usual Moments of Gratitude at 7:45, followed by the Anything Goes Open Mic with host Eric Kuhn.  On Tuesday Mimi Poitras leads Laughter Yoga at 6, followed by a vegetarian potluck.  The Buttonwood brings you Crystal Bowl Sound Healing Tuesday with Lou Sorrentino.  On Thursday, CinTamani and Aruna Chocolates bring you Groove Jam and Super Foods, with treats, chants, and world music.  On Friday, the Buttonwood offers Joe Flood and Bill Gross, with Americana roots music, harmonica, and more. The Aligned with Source Workshop series continues Saturday morning, with this week’s theme being Define & Embrace Your True Self.  Saturday evening it’s O.K. – Olivia King, a singer/songwriter and dancer with an R&B/NeoSoul sound. Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday at about 1 p.m. Help prepare the meal at First Church on Court Street at 11:30. In New Haven tonight, Cafe Nine tonight it’s the Farewell Tour for Pattern is Movement, brought to you by Manic Productions.  On Tuesday, they’ve got Jazz with Kevin St. James and Joe McWilliams.  On Wednesday, it’s Words & Music, with poet K. Ponzio and much more.  Thursday’s headliner a Café Nine is Revolution, I Love You. Friday’s early set at 5 features Shellye Valauskas & Dean Falcone. Friday night at Café Nine Uncle Sonny, Circle//Circle, headline a 9pm bill.  Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session, at Café Nine, is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends at 4:30. The Grand Band Slam Showcase from CT Now (formerly The Advocate) happens later at 9.  On Sunday at 2 Mega Ran takes the Café stage, with the Sunday Soul Service happening at 8. http://www.cafenine.com

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, tonight it’s the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence at 9.  You can enjoy Electric Thursdays this week, with DJ’s spinning lots of music in two rooms.  Friday, they headline Hatebreed for a 20th anniversary show.   On Saturday it’s The Kooks, Joywave, and Young Rising Sons.  www.toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford, Black-eyed Sally’s continues its usual Jazz Mondays tonight with the Andrew Renfroe Quartet. Tomorrow/Tuesday, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18-piece band, works out new material. The Wednesday Blues Jam features Tommy Whalen this week. Thursday, they showcase some of the CT Now Grand Band Slam winners.  On Friday it’s Spiritual Rez, bringing you a reggae funk dance experience. Saturday they host the 16th annual Black-eyed & Bluesfest starting at 4 in Bushnell Park, with music, craft beers, southern food, and more. Musical acts for the festival include Orb Mellon, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones,  Brandon Santini, The Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Balkun Brothers, and  Big Mean Sound Machine.  www.blackeyedsallys.com 

Manic Productions brings “PigPen Theatre Co.” and “You Won’t” to The Space in Hamden this Tuesday.  On Wednesday, you can catch Viet Cong and Girl Band at The Ballroom at The Outer Space.  At Bar in New Haven on Wednesday, Manic presents the Funky Dawgz Brass Band, along with Joon. On Thursday, Reel Big Fish & Less Than Jake come to the College Street Music Hall in New Haven.  At The Ballroom at The Outer Space on Thursday, it’s Phox, Mechanical River, and more.  Friday’s Ballroom event features HoneyHoney and Sonya Kitchell.  On Saturday, Mike Gordon comes to the College Street Music Hall, and on Sunday you can enjoy The Helio Sequence at The Ballroom at The Outer Space.  http://www.manicproductions.org

At the Hartford Public Library, you can attend “Hartford Heroes: Stories of the Hartford Fire Department,” this Tuesday at 5. Two local authors share the history and accomplishments chronicled in their books. They’ve also got Salsa Socials Tuesday at 6.  The Heart City Story Club holds its monthly open mic on Wednesday at 6.  On Saturday, their World of Sounds Concerts series opens with a performance at 3 by the Brazilian band Sambeleza.  http://www.hplct.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, they continue their run of the comedy “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window & Disappeared” through Thursday. Also continuing is “I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story,” a documentary of the man who has been Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for over four decades. On Friday they open “The Yes Men Are Revolting,” which chronicles the activists currently targeting the climate change issue.  They also open the Sundance Film Festival Award-winning shorts of 2015.  Both run through the weekend.  There’s also a weekend screening of “When Marnie Was There,” an animated parable about friendship and emotional repair.  www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues its run of “About Elly,” an Iranian drama about middle class citizens trying to adapt to strict Islamic laws, through Thursday.  On Friday they open “Juaja,” starring Viggo Mortensen in a drama about a Danish engineer who sets out to find this magical city in Argentina in the 1880’s.  It runs through the weekend.  Sunday’s matinee is Julie Taymor’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”  Details at  http://www.cinestudio.org

From 11:30 to 1 DIY Haircut with DJ Tim Daltrey, celebrates punk, hardcore, garage, indie, and metal.


From 1-2am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio keeps the loud rock music pumping. There’s more (loud rock) where that came from, on Combat music radio at 2am.

At 3am, we’ll rebroadcast today’s noontime edition of Democracy Now with Amy Goodman before switching over to the BBC world news at 4am. Morning Edition comes your way at 5am each weekday, here at WESU.
