in our area this week:
Tonight here in Middletown, WESU’s
own DJ Lord Lewis presents the final session of his June residency of The
Rumpus Room on the Waterfront at the Canoe Club at Harbor Park, playing vinyl
sets of the best in contemporary and vintage heavy funk, soul, afrobeat, rare

Up
in Hartford, at Blackeyed Sally’s, tonight
brings the weekly performance by Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18-piece
band. On Wednesday at 8, one of the longest running weekly blues jams in
New England will be hosted by Tim McDonald. And Thursday brings Ray Morant's
Rotating Glitterati to the Sally’s stage.
On Friday at 9 they have Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers, with a new
blues sound they’re calling “Charles River Delta Blues.” On Saturday at 9
they’re featuring singer/songwriter Jeff Pitchell & Texas Flood, with their
mix of blues, rock, funk, and soul.
Tonight
down in New Haven, Café Nine
and Manic Productions offer The Henchmen and Duck Helmet. Wednesday, from 5 to 7, it’s La Cantina
Flamenco, with guitarist Ed Peccerillo. That’s followed at by the Outlaw
Country!! Show with Whitey Morgan and the 78s, and Dave Hill. On Thursday they’ve got JD Wilkes and the
Dirt Daubers, and Joe Fletcher. Friday’s
Happy Hour at 5 features Victor Roland, and at 9 p.m. they offer Jesse Mailin’s
Full Band, Don DiLego, and The Backyard Committee. Saturday’s jazz jam at 4:30 is with the
George Baker Band. Later Saturday night, they’ve got Five in the Chamber, and
Brother Stanley. On Sunday at 4 they’re
presenting a Bluegrass Jam with Stacy Phillips, followed by the Original Sunday
Night Jam at 8 with The Cobalt Rhythm Kings.

night, down at Toad’s Place in New Haven,
brings the Jam Series Finale, featuring Back From Earth, The Backyard
Committee, Balkun Brothers, and more. On
Thursday at 10 they’ve got Luciano & Ikronic, A New Day, Blessing, and Be

Manic Productions brings a number of
additional acts to the area this week. On Wednesday, at Bar in New

At the Russell Library in
Middletown, there will be a meeting of the Connecticut Poetry Society this
Wednesday at 6 p.m. On Thursday at 7,

Also on Wednesday, at 7 p.m., First
Church on Court St. in Middletown hosts the Middletown Scottish Dancers.

Friday
night at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown,
there’s a CD Release Celebration for singer
songwriter Frank Critelli & Friends, who are presenting their 13th
album. Saturday morning, starting at 7:45,
the Buttonwood offers Qigong, tai chi, and community yoga. Saturday
evening brings the musical universe of Beppe Gambetta, an Italian composer and
performer who plays and sings his personal mosaic sounds. Sunday at 1 p.m.,
Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood Tree. Anyone is
welcome. You’re invited to help prepare the meal at the First Church on Court

In some of our local galleries this
week, The Buttonwood displays the artwork of Kathy Parrish Peterson.
Also, Michelle Podgorski’s exhibit, “Fragmented Landscape,” will be on view all
month at the Green Street Arts Center, downtown Middletown. The Art Guild of
Middletown offers their 2014 exhibit tonight through Saturday at the Zilkha
Gallery South daily from one to four p.m.
The Middlesex Community College 10th
Annual Arts and Media Festival continues at the Middletown Campus.

Middletown Children’s Circus, a five-week summer program offering instruction
in Circus Arts to children ages 8-15.

The Jonah Center for Earth and Art
is sponsoring River Paddle, a crowd performance art event, this Saturday at

Now here's a rundown of cinema off
the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
At Real Art Ways in Hartford, the
run of “Ida,” a Polish film about a woman who, before taking final vows a nun,
discovers a family secret from the Nazi occupation, continues tonight through
Wednesday. “Next Goal Wins” also continues through Thursday. This film is about the American Somoa soccer
team that’s transformed from the world’s worst team into World Cup contenders
by a Dutch coach. On Friday they’re showing “Citizen Koch,” an exposé
that follows the money behind the rise of the Tea Party. There’s a post-film discussion Friday night
with AFL-CIO of Greater Hartford President Peggy Buchanan, and others. “Citizen Koch” continues on Saturday. Also on Saturday, at 6 p.m. there’s a one
time showing of “Before Stonewall,” commemorating the 45th anniversary of the
Stonewall Riots. There will be an
after-screening discussion with Executive Producer John Scargliotti and True

Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema
in Hartford, continues its run of “The Lunchbox,” a comedic love story about a
widower nearing retirement in Mumbai who receives lunchboxes from a mysterious
source, tonight through Thursday. “Fed
Up,” a documentary that investigates corporate interests in the food industry,
runs from Friday through Sunday. This

Now, Here’s a rundown of tonight’s
programming on WESU Middletown.
Right after the jive stay tuned for
a special 3 hour edition of Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill of From 6-8pm for an eclectic selection of Americana,
country, folk, folk-rock, bluegrass, acoustic, blues, Celtic, old-time,
singer-songwriter and other music that has a roots influence. As a special
treat Italian guitarist, Beppe Gambette will be live in the studio on tonight’s
show warming up for his appearance this Saturday at The Buttonwood Tree. Bill
will also be giving away a pair of tickets to the Old Songs Music Festival
which is happening this weekend in Altamont NY.
From 8-9pm The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry
presents live and local Connecticut arts and music , in this weekly show
featuring area artists and musicians.
From 9-11pm Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat presents a free form music show spanning the scope of krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, and more!

is in the house for a free form mix of radio goodness until…
At 2 am its time for RootsWorld Radio with Cliff
Furnald to take you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to
music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.
From 3-4am it’s
the The Graveyard Shift with DJ Otto Nation for an An eclectic mix of
music from the WESU library.
