Good evening! It’s Tuesday, June 3rd. This is the Jive at Five – our daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM, WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming weeknights and weekends.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Tonight at 6, at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, brings Laughter Yoga with  a vegetarian potluck.  On Thursday, at 7, it’s the Acoustic Open Mic, with Bob Gotta. On Friday at 8 p.m., sacred-song preserver Peia will perform originals and traditional folk music from across the globe, accompanied by guitarist Sean Frenette and percussionist Tom Monaghan. Saturday morning, starting at 7:45, the Buttonwood offers Qigong (Chi Kung), tai chi, community yoga and an empowerment workshop. Also on Saturday, at 8 p.m., Jim Matus— a composer, band leader, arranger, guitarist, teacher and studio engineer — who specializes in progressive world fusion and improvisational music, performs. Sunday at 1 p.m., Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood Tree.  Anyone is welcome. You’re invited to help prepare the meal at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am. Up in Hartford, at Blackeyed Sally’s, on Tuesday nights,  Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra, an 18-piece big-band, works out new material.  The weekly Wednesday, the Blues Jam, will be hosted by hosted by Gene Donaldson, this week.  And Thursday brings Ray Morant's Rotating Glitterati to the Sally’s stage.  On Friday, it’s the rockin’ bar band  Mixed Signals.  On Saturday, The Mighty Soul Drivers celebrate the release of their debut CD 'Qualified!' by returning to Hartford's 'Home Of The Blues'.  www.blackeyedsallys.com  .

 Tonight, down at Toad’s Place in you can catch Interpol and Teen. Wednesday brings Smoke DZA to Toad’s, with Young Roddy and Monsta Beatz. Thursday brings Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. Friday at Toad’s, Shakedown plays The Dead and Beyond, with Blessed & Gifted and Off the Dome. www.toadsplace.com

Also in New Haven, tonight at, at Café Nine, Chris brings Danny Blue and Mission O. Wednesday, from 5 to 7, it’s La Cantina Flamenco. That’s followed at 7:30 by the Tony Purrone Trio. Thursday, Manic Productions presents PAPA, with Hubbell Mountain and Spectral Fangs. Friday’s Happy Hour features Dan Greene (of Mountain Movers). That’s followed at 9 by Manic Production’s presentation of Nat Baldwin (of Dirty Projectors), with Celestial Shore and Throw Vision. Saturday’s jazz jam at 4:30 is with Mike Coppola and Friends. That’s followed at 9 by a benefit for Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital featuring Losers Sometimes Win, Blastmat, and Death Prayers, with DJ Bill Beckett. Sunday’s Original Sunday Night Jam is with the George Baker Band. www.cafenine.com

Tonight, and every Tuesday in June, WESU’s own DJ Lord Lewis presents The Rumpus Room on the Waterfront, playing vinyl sets of the best in contemporary and vintage heavy funk, soul, afrobeat, rare groove and more. Manic Productions brings a number of additional acts to the area this week: on Wednesday, at Bar in New Haven, it’s Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas, with Blue and Gold, and Olive Tiger. Thursday, JD McPherson comes to the Ballroom at the Outer Space in Hamden, with Sean Rowe and The Cactus Blossoms. Saturday at the Ballroom at the Outer Space, it’s Lissie and The Sea, The Sea. And Saturday, at The Space in Hamden, it’s Saintseneca, Crying, Memory Map and 10,000 Blades. www.manicproductions.org

Tomorrow/Wednesday, at 7 p.m., First Church on Court St. in Middletown hosts the Middletown Scottish Dancers.  Partners not necessary; 860-347-0278 for information. 

Thursday is the first-Thursday-of-the-month gallery walk, from 5 to 7 p.m., at an eclectic array of venues in downtown Middletown, .offering art shows, music, refreshments, art classes, and opportunities to meet interesting crafters. The Buttonwood is displaying the artwork of Kathy Parrish Peterson during the gallery walk, with the opening for that exhibit scheduled for Saturday from 4 to 6. Also, Michelle Podgorski’s exhibit, “Fragmented Landscape,” will be on view all month at the Green Street Arts Center downtown.

Also on Thursday, at the Russell Library, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.,  it’s An Evening with Jennifer Pharr Davis, the 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. She has hiked over 12,000 miles of long distance trails on six continents, and in 2011, she became the first woman to claim the endurance record on the Appalachian Trail, hiking an average of nearly 47 miles per day for 46 days. www.russelllibrary.org .

Argentine Tango is taught in Middletown on Fridays through June by a teacher who studied with Forever Tango performers, at the First Church on Court St.: beginners at 7:30; .intermediate and advanced at 8:30 then a tango social is at 9:30. Information by calling Gem at (203) 543 8099.

Also on Friday, and every Friday, at 9 p.m., Dave Downs, president and CEO of The Highly Unsuccessful Songwriters Association (HUSA), invites songwriters to bring their worst songs to perform at The Nest, at 129 Church Street, Middletown. Info at 860.788.2736.

On Saturday, the Art Guild of Middletown hosts the opening reception of its 2014 exhibit, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zilkha Gallery South, at Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts, 283 Washington Terrace, Middletown. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, the installation of new digital equipment means no films will be screened until Friday, when a run of Sundance shorts begins. www.realartways.com

At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema in Hartford,  the 27th Connecticut LGBT Film Festival continues through Friday,  and then the cinema is closed for maintenance until Thursday, June 12th. www.cinestudio.org .

Now, here’s a rundown of tonight’s programming on WESU.

Right after the jive stay tuned for:  Explorers’ Hour with Pickup Sticks,  which aims to take you places that you’ve never been before!   Inviting you to venture into the infinity of the unknown via a synthesis of science, spoken word, and a lot of popular music.

 From  6-8pm enjoy Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill for an eclectic selection of Americana, country, folk, folk-rock, bluegrass, acoustic, blues, Celtic, old-time, singer-songwriter and other music that has a roots influence.

 From 8-9pm The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry presents live and local Connecticut arts and music , in this weekly show featuring area artists and musicians.

 From 9-11pm Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat  presents a free form music show spanning the scope of krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, and more!

 From 11-12:30 Stage Presence with J-Rock invites you to put your hands together in applause for some of the greatest musical performances ever captured on recording. From Led Zeppelin to John Coltrane, Bob Dylan to Victor Wooten, even YoYo Ma to Daft Punk, Stage Presence has a place for all live musical performance. Tune in and get excited; no tickets required for this free show.

From 12:30-2am Ian is in the house for a free form mix of Radio goodness.

From 2-3am RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

 From  3-4am it’s the The Graveyard Shift with DJ Otto Nation for an an eclectic mix of music from the WESU library.
