Here in Middletown, at the Buttonwood tonight, at 8pm, it’s Evening Oasis, a belly dancing demonstration. Thursday at 8:30, it’s Dance Party with Liviu Pop, mixing live beats with techno, house and trance; Phil Bullaro adds his wild video element!
Friday at 8, it’s Warren Byrd with the Afro-Semitic Experience, a Workshop Performance of their new project, “Jazz Souls On Fire,” a benefit for The Buttonwood Tree Piano Fund. Warren Byrd is a Hartford native with an international reputation. Saturday mornings start off your day at 7:30 with Quigong (Chee Gung) followed by community yoga.
Saturday at 8pm, it’s the not-to-be-missed Gail Wade Trio.
On Sunday, Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood Tree. You're invited to help prepare the vegetarian meal at 11:30 a.m. at the First Church on Court Street. Also, all month, The Buttonwood will be exhibiting “Forest, Form and Fantasy,” a show of mixed-media works. Information about all Buttonwood events can be found at buttonwood.org.

Back in Middletown, on Thursday at 5 p.m., there will be an opening reception of the Wesleyan Potters student exhibit at the gallery at 350 South Main Street.
Also on Thursday in Middletown, at 7:30 p.m., Oddfellows Playhouse will present the last performance of “Hear What's In The Heart - A Shoemaker's Tale,” a theatrical family portrait celebrating the life of an Italian grandfather from Middletown. The show’s creator, Stephen Scionti, plays all eight characters, including some Middletown fixtures whom longtime local residents may recognize.
Riverwood Poetry, presents it's annual Social Justice Poetry Reading at The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford, this coming Sunday, June 23rd, from 2-4-pm. "None But Ourselves Can Free Our Minds," will feature performance poet adn Haiti activist, Prof. Gina Athena Ulysse of Wesleyan University and CT poet/educator John Stanizzi. On Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m., children ages 6 to 12, accompanied by an adult, are invited to the Children’s Peace Festival as it celebrates its 10th anniversary with storytelling, dance, face-painting, games, crafts and more. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, Deceptive Practice: the Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay continues through tonight.
Tomorrow, it’s the Creative Cocktail Hour from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday begins a run of The Source Family, about a secretive and outlandish commune in 1971 Los Angeles. Also starting Friday, Violeta Went to Heaven, a portrait of Violeta Parra, the influential figure in world music and a complex icon of Chilean history. Saturday brings a screening of Hugo, director Martin Scorcese’s only film based on a children’s book.
