Good evening, it's Wednesday,  January 30th and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community  programming week nights and weekends. I'm Bill Denert, producer and host of Thursday night's Evening Jazz where "hearing is the best experience and Connecticut's number 1 Washington Nationals fan!

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the cultural and entertaining events happening in our area this week:

On Saturday afternoon at 1pm, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts the Free Poets Collective, featuring The Meeting House Poets, with the Piano-Bass Duo of David Sergio and Walter Mayo augmenting the poetry with jazz and American Songbook standards.

At 8pm Saturday evening, Jazz Trumpeter Nick Di Maria and his ensemble will be playing original compositions from their upcoming studio release that was recorded at New Haven’s Firehouse 12 Studio.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood each Sunday. All are welcome to enjoy a meal and help prepare it beforehand at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am. For more information you can check out foodnotbombs.net online buttonwood.org

At Café Nine in New Haven tonight it’s Shellye Valauskas & Dean Falcone w/ Michele Riganese. Thursday night at Café Nine JAZZ HAVEN Presents: The Tony Purrone Trio. Friday, Rizzo's Dilemma makes for a night of hard-hitting improvisational rock. Saturday's Afternoon Jazz Jam is hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio this week.  Saturday night The Spampinato Brothers take the stage w/ the Ivory Bills .  SUNDAY there’s a special show to gather together to celebrate the life of the late, great Sam Velecca with an afternoon of Grateful Dead music. Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight, it's their
longstanding Blues Jam session hosted by Tim McDonald this week. Thursday brings Girls Guns & Glory w/Elison Jackson. Rhett Tyler & Early Warning make for an evening of MondernBlues at Blackeyed Sally’s Friday Night. Saturday night THE ALEXIS P. SUTER BAND brings their roots, blues and soul  to Sally’s. Middletown Scottish Country Dancers meets Every Wednesday at First Church on Court Street from 7-9:30pm offering Class for beginners and experienced dancers.  You can call 860-347-0278 for information.

Thursday afternoon at 2pm here in Middletown, The Russell Library presents the writing workshop: “We Were There: Writing Your Military Experiences” under the direction of author Elisabeth Petry . This series invites veterans to share their stories in their own voices in Meeting Room 2. Also at Russell Library on Thursday evening, The Middlesex County Historical Society presents quilt expert, Sue Reich, at 7:00 pm in the Hubbard Room of Russell Library. The title of her talk is “Quiltmaking 1941 to 1945 – The War Years.”  Saturday morning the Russell knitters meet and invite you to join them for knitting tips and tricks. Friday evening at 8pm  Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents: “Music at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello” in Crowell Concert Hall: featuring what might have been heard after-hours in the Charlottesville, Virginia home of Thomas Jefferson, as well as in the slaves' quarters. Featuring performances by singer, guitarist and banjo player Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Dennis James on glass harmonica, singer Jennifer Hope Wills, violinists Robert Mealy and Mazz Swift, cellist Katie Rietman, Christopher Layer on bagpipes and flutes, and Wesleyan Professor of Music Neely Bruce on harpsichord.

This Sunday Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents: “Violin & Piano: Dramatic Partners” Featuring Wesleyan Private Lessons Teacher Erika Schroth alongside Violinist Netta Hadari. At  The Russell House on High Street, here in Middletown. Admission: FREE! Sunday also brings the Monthly Shaped Note Singing gathering to Wesleyan’s Downey House at the corner of High and Court Sts in Middletown from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. More online at www.wesleeyan.edu/cfa


At 8:00 pm this Friday in Hartford, Canadian Brass Trombonist, Achilles Liarmakopoulos and Maestro Edward Cumming with Hartt Sinfonia join Ezequiel Menéndez for Concert to Benefit Jubilee House at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. More information can be found at jubileehouse.org.

Saturday Night in Hartford at 7:30Pm at Real Art Ways, The Taylor Ho Bynum Ensemble presents: The Prince Project World Premiere which pays tribute the work of Pop Icon and songwriter, Prince. More can be found at realartways.org

Now Here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford through tonight you can catch “56 Up.” Starting in 1964 with “Seven Up,” which follow the lives of 14 children from diverse backgrounds from all over England who were filmed every seven years since, examining the progression of their lives.  Real Art Ways is also showing The Rabbi’s Cat a Animated feature Based on the best-selling graphic novel by Joann Sfar. The Rabbi's Cat tells the story of a rabbi and his talking cat - a sharp-tongued feline philosopher brimming with scathing humor and a less than pure love for the rabbi's voluptuous teenage daughter.

Tomorrow night, Real Art Ways presents 2 screenings of Dave Grohl’s  Documentary film, Sound City about the infamous recording studio in Van Nuys, California Through interviews with the artists and producers that created decades of musical history at Sound City. Tonight, Cinestudio, Trinity College's cinema in Hartford, is showing a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window as Part of the Thinking through Film Series.  Opening Thursday and running through Saturday Cinestudio presents Wreck It Ralph, an amusing animated movie about 80s-era video game characters who come to life. Right after the Jive at 5, it's the Needle Drop with Anthony Fantano. An hour of the latest and greatest in the world of independent rock, pop, electronic, and experimental music out there today.

From 6-6:30 it's

Starting at 6:30 and running until 8pm it's Fusion Radio with James Fusion. Techno from around the globe mixed live since 1992. It's a vinyl world!

From 8-9:30pm it's The Warehouse with Mike Nyce. The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

Beginning at 9:30 until11pm it's The Vault with DJ Anton Banks
On the air since 1995! Presenting listeners with the very latest in underground electronica on vinyl format, so the music can be heard as it was intended. Regularly featuring exclusive sets from international producers and DJs.

Then from 11pm-midnight, it's The Smorgasboard with Hygge Li and Maneki Neko
A colossal mix of electronic infused with the spices of dance.

Beginning at midnight and running until 1:30, Gus Lo presents Midnight munchies,
below Ground Street music your ears have been craving.

 From 1:30-2:30am it's Today Is Yesterday’s Tomorrow with Fuzzball
Follow along as we ride the contours of recorded sound through history and explore the interplay of past and present.

And starting at 2:30 and running for an hour it's Alive Not Amplified with Adrien
The longest running student radio show on WESU! Electronics discouraged.

And from 3:30 to 4am it's DJ Vegetable Reads Missed Connections
You’ve lost someone. Let’s find them.

The BBC World News   begins at 4am and we begin tomorrow’s programming at 5am with Morning Edition from National Public Radio.
