Good evening, it's Monday,  January 28th. This is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community  programming week nights and weekends. I'm Ben Michael. Thanks for joining us.
Here’s a brief rundown of some of the cultural and entertaining events happening in our area this week:
On Monday evenings, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown is the place for J-Cherry’s weekly Anything Goes Open Mic. J-Cherry also produces a weekly Tuesday night radio program, Voice of the City, here on WESU at 8-pm. Friday Night, The Modern Riffs a 9 piece band with a horn section deliver a combination of jazz, classic rock, and swing at the Buttonwood Tree.


Saturday afternoon at 1pm Free Poets Collective Features The Meeting House Poets, with the Piano-Bass Duo of David Sergio and Walter Mayo augmenting the poetry with jazz and American Songbook standards. At 8pm Saturday evening, Jazz Trumpeter Nick Di Maria and his ensemble will be playing original compositions from their upcoming studio release that was recorded at New Haven’s Firehouse 12 Studio.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood each Sunday. All are welcome to enjoy a meal and help prepare it beforehand at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am. www.foodnotbombs.net more about buttonwood tree events online at www.buttonwood.org 

At Café Nine in New Haven tonight, there’s an acoustic open mic. Tomorrow Café Nine presents a local indie pop showcase with Dance Charletan and Big Charlie's Rubber Band. Wednesday night it’s Shellye Valauskas & Dean Falcone w/ Michele Riganese. Thursday night at Café Nine JAZZ HAVEN Presents: The Tony Purrone Trio. Friday, Rizzo's Dilemma makes for a night of hard-hitting improvisational rock. Saturday's Afternoon Jazz Jam is hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio this week.  Saturday night The Spampinato Brothers take the stage w/ the Ivory Bills .  SUNDAY there’s a special show to Gather together to celebrate the life of the late, great Sam Velecca with an afternoon of Grateful Dead music. Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight, it's their weekly Jazz Monday event. Tomorrow brings Michael Palin's Other Orchestra, an 18-piece band, to Sally's stage for their weekly engagement.
Wednesday, it's Black eyed Sally’s longstanding Blues Jam session hosted by Tim McDonald this week. Thursday brings Girls Guns & Glory w/Elison Jackson. Rhett Tyler & Early Warning make for an evening of MondernBlues at Blackeyed Sally’s Friday Night. Saturday night THE ALEXIS P. Middletown Scottish Country Dancers meets Every Wednesday 7-9:30p offering Class for beginners and experienced dancers. At First Church on Court Street. You can call 860-347-0278 for information.
Thursday afternoon at 2pm here in Middletown, The Russell Library presents the writing workshop: “We Were There: Writing Your Military Experiences” under the direction of author Elisabeth Petry . This series invites veterans to share their stories in their own voices in Meeting Room 2. Also at Russeell Library on Thursday evening, The Middlesex County Historical Society presents quilt expert, Sue Reich, at 7:00 pm in the Hubbard Room of Russell Library. The title of her talk is “Quiltmaking 1941 to 1945 – The War Years.”  Saturday morning the Russell knitters meet and invite you to join them for knitting tips and tricks. Friday evening at 8pm  Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents: “Music at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello” in Crowell Concert Hall: featuring what might have been heard after-hours in the Charlottesville, Virginia home of Thomas Jefferson, as well as in the slaves' quarters. Featuring performances by singer, guitarist and banjo player Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Dennis James on glass harmonica, singer Jennifer Hope Wills, violinists Robert Mealy and Mazz Swift, cellist Katie Rietman, Christopher Layer on bagpipes and flutes, and Wesleyan Professor of Music Neely Bruce on harpsichord.

This Sunday Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents: “Violin & Piano: Dramatic Partners” Featuring Wesleyan Private Lessons Teacher Erika Schroth alongside Violinist Netta Hadari. At  The Russell House on High Street, here in Middletown. Admission: FREE! Sunday also brings the Monthly Shaped Note Singing gathering to Wesleyan’s Downey House at the corner of High and Court Sts in Middletown from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. More online at www.wesleeyan.edu/cfa

at 8:00 pm this Friday in Hartford, Canadian Brass Trombonist, Achilles Liarmakopoulos and Maestro Edward Cumming with Hartt Sinfonia join Ezequiel Menéndez for Concert to Benefit Jubilee House at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. www.jubileehouse.org.

Saturday Night inHartford at 7:30Pm at Real Art Ways, The Taylor Ho Bynum Ensemble presents: The Prince Project World Premiere which pays tribute the work of Pop Icon and songwriter, Prince. www.realartways.org

Now Here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford through Wednesday you can catch “56 Up.” Starting in 1964 with “Seven Up,” which follow the lives of 14 children from diverse backgrounds from all over England who were filmed every seven years since, examining the progression of their lives.  Real Art Ways is also showing The Rabbi’s Cat a Animated feature Based on the best-selling graphic novel by Joann Sfar. The Rabbi's Cat tells the story of a rabbi and his talking cat - a sharp-tongued feline philosopher brimming with scathing humor and a less than pure love for the rabbi's voluptuous teenage daughter. Thursday Night Real Art Ways presents 2 screenings of Dave Grohl’s  Documentary film, Sound City about the infamous recording studio in Van Nuys, California Through interviews with the artists and producers that created decades of musical history at Sound City. Tonight and tomorrow, Cinestudio, Trinity College's cinema in Hartford, is showing Wake in Fright,” called “The best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence.”  Gary Bond stars as a sensitive schoolteacher who ventures into the Outback, finding himself lured into a rural nightmare of debauchery and dread that exists far from any dreams of civilization. Wednesday Real Art Ways presents a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window as Part of the Thinking through Film Series.  Opening Thursday and running through Saturday Cinestudio presents Wreck It Ralph, an amusing animated movie about 80s-era video game characters who come to life. Now here’s a rundown of tonight’s programming on WESU.

Right after the Jive At Five, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry, a well-rounded jazz show.

At 6pm each week night, Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network provides an evening dose of alternative international news and reporting.

At 630 tonight Michael Benson presents 75% folk. Featuring  90 minutes of Folk and Americana with sides of Soul, World music and film sound tracks. 

8pm Catch an encore editions of The Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis for 90 minutes of soul, Funk, and Afro Latin Dance Floor Grooves.

At 9:30 it’s a special 3 hour winter edition of Attention Deficit Disk Jockey with Lee, where you can hear The music of yesterday's future, today.

From 12:30-2:30am you can catch a refreshing mix tunes  you are not likely to hear elsewhere thanks to DJ Otto NAtion

at 2:30 am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio features the best DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll record collection.

at 3:30am DJ Vegetable Reads Missed Connections. You've lost someone. Let's find them.

The BBC World News   begins at 4am and we begin tomorrow’s programming at 5am with Morning Edition from National Public Radio.
