July 23rd Jive

Good evening, it's Monday, July 23rd. This is the Jive at Five, WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. Every Monday night at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, J-CHERRY hosts the ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC. Tonight there will also be a performance by folk singer David Smith. Signups begin at7:30pm. Performances start at 8pm.
Friday night, J Cherry and the Strawberries will perform a variety show entitled Voice of the City at the Buttonwood.
Saturday night is a double header with Alli and the Oxen Frees and folk group Mumblty-Peg performing a benefit concert, with proceeds going towards Pathways Togo, Inc. Show starts at 8pm.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome to the meal and are also invited to help prepare the food at the First Church on Court Street at 11:30 am.  More information about all Buttonwood events at www.buttonwood.org or 860.347.4957

Down in New Haven's Café Nine tonight, you can catch Laurelin's Going Away Extravaganza with performances by Laurelin Kruse; The Merzodactyls and Me; and Jose Oyola and the Astronauts. Tuesday night brings 70's influenced country-rock performers Jack Wilson and Jay Russell. Wednesday there will be an early show starting at 8 with violinist Ada Pasternack, followed by a late show at 10 Pat Dalton and friends. Thursday Jazz Haven presents an early show by the Abe Ovadia Group, followed by the Thirsty Thursday Trio at 10. Friday will hold an ode to The Replacements, featuring a screening of Color Me Obsessed: A Film About the Replacements. Café nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by  Tony Dioguardi and Friends this week. Saturday night  BLUE PLATE RADIO and TASTE OF NEW HAVEN Present: a summer evening of culinary delights strolling through Downtown New Haven and ending with a world-class jazz, funk, and R&B show! Down in New Haven at Toads Place, Rohn Lawrence and friends play smooth Jazz in the lily Pad on Monday Nights, with all ladies getting in free! Wednesday is the weekly dubstep dance party, and Thursday night will see Ingrid Michaelson on the main stage. Friday night is the Summer Slam Fest and Saturday night SHAKEDOWN plays the Grateful DEAD AND BEYOND on the Toad’s main stage.  Rhythmic Circus and Carbonated Insight open that show. On Tuesday nights in Hartford, at Blackeyed Sally’s you can catch Mike Palin's Other Orchestra, an 18 piece big band jazz ensemble.  Every wed at 8:30pm Sally’s hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! This week’s session is hosted by Tim McDonald.   Reverend Payton's Big Damn Band is on stage Thursday night at Sally’s . Also this Wednesday, Manic productions presents a free (21+) show featuring Filligar, Turf War, and The Joiner Inners at BAR in New Haven.

Tomorrow night at Wesleyan's Center for the Arts here in Middletown there will be a free midday performance by Gina Ulysse entitled, "Voodoo Doll: What if Haiti Were a Woman?"
This Saturday brings the return of the CT Traditional Jazz Fest to SHERATON FOUR POINTS HOTEL in Meriden.  This years festival features The Midiri Brothers, Galvanized Jazz Band, The Heartbeat Jazz Band, and more.  more info online at www.greatctjazz.org

Thursday night, Infinity Hall in Norfolk presents Grammy winner Marc Cohn followed by the Brubeck Brothers quartet on Friday night. The Oak Ridge Boys take the stage Saturday night and Tommy Emmanuel returns to Infinity Hall on Sunday. more at www.inifinityhall.com

Tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green  on Main St,  from 3-6:30pm now thru Sept.   The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open from10am-2pm every Friday and is located at the corner of  Liberty and Main STs. The Longstanding Middletown farmers’ market is located on the south Green and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m now through October.

 
Here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path herein central CT this week. 
Tonight and Tomorrow, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, closes their run of “Moonrise Kingdom” by American film director Wes Anderson.  Wednesday Night Cinestudio presents a week long run of the dramedy, "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." Through Thursday, Real Art Ways in Hartford continues their run Polisse, the Cannes Fim Festival winner that follows the daily lives of a tight-knit team of men and women working in the Child Protection Unit of the Parisian police.  From 11:30 - 12:30 Anvil Isle presents a musical monsoon of alternative rock, blues, dream, funk, hard rock, indie, punk, reggae, surf, and world music inviting you to bury your feet in the sand and hear the waves come crashing through your speakers.
From 12:30-3:00 Psychedelic Rick presents the late night Summer Concert Series featuring live concerts in their full glory. Tonight will be The Allman Bros and Grand Funk Railroad at the Atlanta International Pop Fest in 1970.
From 3-4am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio features an hour of international loud rock and punk.
The BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM and we begin tomorrow's broadcast at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
