Every Monday it's "ANYTHING GOES!” OPEN MIC WITH J-CHERRY AT THE BUTTONWOOD TREE on Main Street, with 7:30pm sign-up, 8:00pm start. Thurday night, its open mic with bob gotta, with 6:30 sign up, 7:00 start. Friday evening at the Buttonwood, it's Joe Flood and the Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band at 8pm, and Saturday the Sinan Bakir Jazz Trio takes the Buttonwood stage at 7:30pm. Sunday night, its a new Open Mic at the Buttonwood that will be filmed in its entirety to be aired on Comcast TV. Only those who agree to be viewed on TV should perform, and all are welcome. Tuesday from 5-7, Middlesex Community College's Pegasus gallery hosts a reception for their latest exhibit by Forrest r. bailey, "responding to time and place": a series of paintings including landscapes and figurative works that narrate political and social commentaries. Middlesex Community College in Middletown will host “Are You Now or Have You Ever Been,” performed by the Middletown-based theater troupe Vintage Players. and based on the transcripts from hearings following investigations on real and suspected communist members in Hollywood.  The free event is open to the public and will be held in Chapman Hall, second floor, room 808 C & D on Thursday, April 5, 6:30-9 p.m.

Tomorrow night at 8, Celebrated author Amitav Ghosh will read from his recent work, which reflects his early life in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. in Wesleyan University’s Memorial Chapel on High Street
Wednesday, Curator Patrick Dowdey gives a gallery talk on  chinese antiques, followed by a luncheon buffet. This intriguing and varied array of antiques provides a window into the lives of upper class in late-19th-century China.

The Russell LIbrary on Broad Street is having a special showing of "The Fallen Idol", in the Hubbard room, at part of their Great Movies from Great Books series. What happens when a 30-page tale becomes a 2-hour film? Find out how director Carol Reed and writer Graham Greene turned a sad study of childhood disillusionment into a thriller that out Hitchcocks Hitchcock. Tomorrow at noon. Bring a sandwich- the library provides beverages and desserts.

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, you can see Salt of Life tonight through Thursday. Try as he might to get noticed by women, Gianni never seems to get a second glance. Dejected Gianni looks on longingly as his aging pals court gorgeous young women, and starts to question why all of the passion seems to have disappeared from his life.
Friday through Sunday, Real Art Ways shows The Forgiveness of Blood, which focuses on an Albanian teen who's life is suddenly up-ended when his father and uncle become entangled in a land dispute that starts a blood feud.

At Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartfor, Albert Nobbs plays tonight through Wednesday. Glenn Close gives a remarkable performance as a woman in 19th century Dublin who lives in fear that her impersonation of a shy man named Albert Nobbs will be revealed. Friday and Saturday, The Artist, a silent film shot in luminous black and white, follows the seismic changes of late 1920s’ Hollywood, as a silent film star falls from grace with the arrival of the talkies.
