Tuesday 05-09-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday May 9th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Marianne O’Hare, produce of Conversations on HealthCare, heard Wednesday’s at 4:30, right before the Jive at Five. Here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

Thursday, the Buttonwood in Middletown hosts comedian Emma Willmann. Emma made her late night debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2016 and has also performed standup on Fuse’s Uproarious and Seeso’s Night Train. Friday sees a night of jazz and blues at The Buttonwood, with vocalist Kosi on her Who I Am Tour Featuring Eric Lee. Saturday mornings bring the weekly, aligned with the source spiritual workshops to the Buttonwood. Saturday evening Terza Classe takes the stage offering the sounds of bluegrass and Americana through the lens of Naples. The week ends with Near and Far Storytellers on Sunday. http://buttonwood.org

Tonight in New Haven at Café Nine, Fernando Pinto Presents SLAID CLEAVES, a storyteller with a musical dimension. Tomorrow/Wednesday brings a COMEDY OPEN MIC HOSTED BY DAN RICE, and Thursday Café Nine offers an evening With THE REVELERS. Friday's Weekly Wind Down Happy Hour is with MIKE HATFIELD. KLater Friday night at Café Nine Goat Herder, Slip and Fall, and Productive Member take the stage. Saturday brings the weekly JAZZ JAM SESSION hosted by Gary Grippo & Friends this week. Saturday night, THE CROWN STREET ORCHESTRA and THE BIRDMEN take the stage. On Sunday, Caroline Spence, Brian Dolzani play "The Sunday Buzz" Matinee from Cygnus Radio. On Sunday at Café Nine The Refurbished Original Sunday Blues Jam Session welcomes the GEORGE LESIW BAND for some good ol' blues.  www.cafenine.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight’s Jazz Monday session features a special secret guest artist tonight. Every Tuesday night at Sally's, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra gets funky as they jam and work out new material. On Wednesday, ED BRADLEY hosts this week’s COMMUNITY BLUES JAM. On Thursday, Sally's hosts the CT Blues Society’s ANNUAL BAND CHALLENGE, where bands duke it out for the chance to play In Memphis. Thursday nights Sally’s house band, The Po Boys, play a set and feature special guests. Friday May 12th brings THE AMBASSADOR OF BLUES AND SOUL, SLAM ALLEN, one of the most dynamic and original blues and soul artists on the scene. On Saturday, PROFESSOR LOUIE AND THE CROWMATIX play a mix of rock n roll and blues. Sunday, the 14th is the Mother’s Day Gospel Brunch, Featuring a full Southern Buffet & the Mary Taylor Gospel Revue.   www.blackeyedsallys.com

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, This Thursday (May 11th9 brings an opportunity to catch PINK TALKING FISH, wo offer A FUSION OF PINK FLOYD, THE TALKING HEADS & PHISH. West End Blend opens that show. This Tuesday, Manic presents Amon Amarth and Goatwhore at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, for a night of heavy metal. Kevin Devine, Adult Mom, and Joe Michelini (of River City Extension/American Trappist) play Wed, May 10, at The Ballroom at The Outer Space. Also on wednesday Manic Presents #FreeMusicWednesdays with Tall Heights, Henry Jamison, and Oh, Cassius! at BAR in New Haven. On Saturday, LANY and Goody Grace play at College Street Music Hall. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of A QUIET PASSION and CITIZEN JANE: BATTLE FOR THE CITY this week. Friday and through the weekdend, Real Art Ways presents "Risk", a character study of Julian Assange. Also on screen this weekend at Real Art Ways, is MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL SINKING INTO THE SEA.  Details & screening times at www.realartways.org

Tonight and tomorrow, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is showing Land of Mine, a film that captures the moment when war ends and the road to rediscovering one’s humanity begins. Thursday afternoon, Cinestudio presents National Theater Live’s production of Obsession, which was based on The Postman Always Rings Twice. Thursday evening there’s A Second Thursdays Out Film CT presentation of the lesbian horror/comedy, Women who Kill. 20th Century Women hits the Cinestudio screen Friday and Saturday, for an indie film telling a story about family, sexuality, and identity. Sunday there’s an encore presentation of the National Theater Live’s production of Obsession. Sunday Cinestudio also begins a run of Frantz.   Details and screening times at www.cinestudio.org

Right after the jive, stay tuned for The Soul Spoke with DJ Skaz for a weekly sampling of tunes from around-the-world that uplift, realign, and educate, giving soul to your world and backbone to your day.

From 6-8pm stay tuned for Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

At 8:00 stay tuned for the Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry, a weekly show featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music.

At 9pm, The Big Controversy with Eric Kuhn, is a public affairs show with discussion and analysis of current events, current personalities, and the current state of the reality/fake reality flux.
At (:30 Deni presents 30 minutes of classic old time radio.

At 10:00 stay tuned for UnderCover with Ali & Ben10-11pm for an hour exploring the concept of inspiration through imitation (cover songs).

From 11-midnight Nouns! with Jackalope wraps an hour of radio around a different noun, each week.

At Midnight its Down The Lineage with DJ MosDefNot & Hyphy Taking the "Oh Geez" out of the OGs.

From 1-4am Sir Bruce presents The Greatest Sounds Under The Sun featuring 2 hrs of old school RNB and Soul music.

Weekdays, we begin our program day at 4am with BBC world Report, followed by NPR’s Morning Edition at 5am.

At 9am stay tuned for Rising up with Sonali from Pacifica.

NPRs 1A with Joshua Johnson comes your way at 10 am and at 11am (Monday through Thursday) it’s Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod from Pacifica.

Of Course, at noon every weekday, it’s our flagship independent daily news hour, Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman.
