In Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree tonight offers Sassy Songwriters, with three women performing stories of love, loss, joy and redemption. New Haven's Cafe Nine Friday Weekly Wind Down Happy Hour hosts Snake Hill Blues. The late show features Beniz Tek of Radio Birdman sharing a bill with Dust Hat. Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and later they have the Demkovic CD Release Party. Here in town at Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts, Philadelphia’s Tempesta di Mare perform their baroque chamber music concert, A Tale of Two Italian Cities, featuring pieces from Venice and Naples, tonight at Crowell Concert Hall. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of I Am Not Your Negro, a documentary about James Baldwin; and Kedi, a cat documentary filmed in Istanbul, through and beyond the weekend. You’re Killing Me Susana opens tonight, screening through Thursday. Also there are afternoon showings Saturday & Sunday of the animated feature, My Life as a Zucchini. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues showing La La Land, a contemporary movie musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Their annual April in Paris Festival opens Sunday, starting with the matinée screening of the 1928 film The Italian Straw Hat, and the evening film, Robert Bresson’s 1959 film, Pickpocket. Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with Michelle & Alex and that Wesleyan music scene.

6:30 to 7 is the Middletown Youth Radio Project, featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

From 11:30pm until 2am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

From 2 until 4am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

The Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry covers the hour from 4 to 5am with a compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the BBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’s the Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!

Here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

In just about an hour at 6pm, Russell Library in Middletown screens the film “A Man Called Ove” on as part of the ongoing Books to Blockbusters series. Tomorrow (Friday) morning the Library offers Drawing Mandalas for Insight into Life Issues, with a Rigid Heddle Loom Weaving demonstration later to celebrate Women’s History Month. From 11-midnight The American Empire with, Tootse Mutant explores the effects of American Cultural Imperialism on the world's soundscape. From Peruvian Punk to Japanese Jazz we'll take a look at how other countries have adopted American music styles.

At midnight The Audible Underground with Joshinvents invites listeners to explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media.
From 1-2am Festival Files with DJ Frita takes a look back at legendary folk and rock concerts from around the country and the music idols that dominated the stages throughout the years.

From 2-3am it's Paradise Airwaves with Plushie Avenger. A show dedicated to LGBTQ+ music genres (disco, house, queercore/punk, etc.), queer-themed songs, and music by LGBTQ+ artists.

And from 3-4am, stay tuned for An A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.
The BBC World News airs til 5 am and we start the day at 5 with NPR’s Morning Edition.

Good evening, it's Monday March 27th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 pm to right before the Jive at Five. At the Russell Library in Middletown, on Tuesday, the Classic Mystery Discussion Group dives into Agatha Christie’s “The Mysterious Affair at Styles”. On Tuesday evening there’s a book signing with Jean Baur presenting “Joy Unleashed,” the story of her therapy dog Bella, who will also be in attendance. They screen “A Man Called Ove” on Thursday as part of the ongoing Books to Blockbusters series. On Friday morning it’s Drawing Mandalas for Insight into Life Issues, with a Rigid Heddle Loom Weaving demonstration later to celebrate Women’s History Month. The Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry covers the hour from 4 to 5am with a compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the BBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’s the Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
