Tonight At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Veteran’s Writing Group meets this Thursday at 7. Visit their website for information on summer events, children’s activities, and more. http://www.russelllibrary.org
On Friday The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown presents Layers and Frames, a Philly-based duo with world music, folk, and more. On Saturday at 4 there’s a guitar workshop with Japanese performer/composer Hiroya Tsukamoto. Later at 8, he performs Cinematic Guitar Poetry. On Sunday at 7, the Great Make Believe Improv Show brings you Comedy for the Family. www.buttonwood.org
At Infinity Hall in Hartford, tonight headlining Jah-9, along with Dubtronic Kru. On Friday, Girls, Guns and Glory take the stage, with special guests The Mallett Brothers, bringing you Country Rock. On Saturday you can catch some laughs with A Christian, A Muslim and a Jew, or Two Comedy show.http://www.infinityhall.com
Down in New Haven tonight, they’ve got David Poe, Winterpills, and Sam Perduta. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Helwigs this week, followed at 9 by Five in the Chamber and River Whyless. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session features Mike Coppola and Friends, with Rideyna, Mercy Choir, and The Tet Offensive coming your way later at 9. Back up in Hartford, at Blackeyed Sally’s, On Friday, it’s a double-header, with Damon Fowler and Jason Ricci taking the stage. Saturday’s headliner is The Kinsey Report, with brothers Donald and Ralph and their legacy blues sound. www.blackeyedsallys.com.
Down in New Haven at Toad’s Place on Friday, they’ve got Big Jim’s Birthday Bash with a host of artists performing. It’s Summer Slamfest 5 on Saturday. www.toadsplace.com
The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford now offers free admission every Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. www.thewadsworth.org

The Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival happens this Saturday starting at 1 p.m. in Mortensen Riverfront Plaza in Hartford. Enjoy Caribbean food, music, cool island beverages, and more. Rain date is Sunday. http://www.riverfront.org
The Connecticut Ballet brings its Summer Dance Caravan to Middlesex Community College in Middletown on Saturday with a free open-air performance at 7:30. Rain date is Sunday, August 2. Details at http://www.arts2go.org
This Weekend also brings one of CTs biggest summer music festivals, The Gathering of the Vibes. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the music fest and features a huge line up with dozens of national acts at seaside park in Bridgeport. Tickets and info at https://gatheringofthevibes.com/
You can support Connecticut’s Farmer’s Markets and enjoy healthy food while you’re at it! The East Haddam Farmer’s market happens every Wednesday from 4 to 7, Durham’s is on Thursdays from 3 to 6. The Clinton market is every Thursday from 4 to 7. Middletown’s North End farmers market is on Friday from 10 to 2. There’s one in Higganum Village on Friday from 3:30 to 6:30, and in Cromwell on Friday from 4 to 7. On the shore, in Old Saybrook markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Chester market is open on Sundays from 10 to 1. Middletown’s long-running market on the South Green runs Tuesdays and Thursdays through October. The Hartford Public Library’s Global Lens Film Series brings you “Nina’s Dowry,” about a husband pursuing dowry rights in Cameroon. Full details at http://www.hplct.org
At Real Art Ways in Hartford, the run of “Cartel Land,” a riveting look at two vigilante groups battling the Mexican drug cartels, continues. Also continuing is “Wild Tales,” a Spanish comedy/mystery about the thin line between civilization and barbarism. Both run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Beyond the Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary,” a documentary about LEGOs, their global fan base, and innovative uses. Also opening is “A Borrowed Identity,” about a Palestenian boy trying to fit in with his Jewish schoolmates at boarding school. Both run through the weekend. http://www.realartways.org
Tonight Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues its run of “The Farewell Party,” an Israeli comedy about nursing home residents in Jerusalem inventing new ways to die with dignity. On Friday they open “The Third Man,” a restoration of the 1949 classic Cold War tale that takes place in occupied Vienna. Starring Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, and Orson Welles, the restoration is released on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Welles. Details at www.cinestudio.org
Films on Foss is a pilot open-air movie series happening in Middletown at Foss Hill on the Wesleyan Campus. A brainchild of the Mayoral Youth Cabinet, they’re bringing you “Frozen” this Saturday at 7. http://www.arts2go.org
