Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s scheduled in the community this weekend.

Right about now the 27th Annual Children's Circus of Middletown entitled "Headin' West!", a Kids Arts 2015 presentation by Oddfellows Playhouse, is beginning at Spencer School, 207 Westfield St. in Middletown.

Tonight The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown presents Layers and Frames, a Philly-based duo with world music, folk, and more.  On Saturday at 4 there’s a guitar workshop with Japanese performer/composer Hiroya Tsukamoto. Later at 8, he performs Cinematic Guitar Poetry. On Sunday at 7, the Great Make Believe Improv Show brings you Comedy for the Family.

New Haven's Café Nine Friday Happy Hour features The Helwigs this week, followed at 9 by Five in the Chamber and River Whyless. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session features Mike Coppola and Friends, with Rideyna, Mercy Choir, and The Tet Offensive coming your way later at 9. The Sunday Soul Service (funk and soul dance party with DJ  Dooley-O) happens at 8. The Connecticut Ballet brings its Summer Dance Caravan to Middlesex Community College in Middletown on Saturday with a free open-air performance at 7:30.  Rain date is Sunday, August 2.  Details at arts2go.org

This Weekend also brings one of CTs biggest summer music festivals, The Gathering of the Vibes. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the music fest and features a huge line up with dozens of national acts at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. Tickets and info at gatheringofthevibes.com

Support Connecticut’s Farmer’s Markets and enjoy healthy food while you’re at it! The East Haddam Farmer’s Market happens every Wednesday from 4 to 7, Durham’s is on Thursdays from 3 to 6. The Clinton market is every Thursday from 4 to 7. Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday from 10 to 2. There’s one in Higganum Village on Friday from 3:30 to 6:30, and in Cromwell on Friday from 4 to 7. On the shore, in Old Saybrook markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Chester market is open on Sundays from 10 to 1. Middletown’s long-running market on the South Green runs Tuesdays and Thursdays through October. The Hartford Public Library’s Global Lens Film Series brings you “Nina’s Dowry,” about a husband pursuing dowry rights in Cameroon, at 1pm on Saturday. Full details at hplct.org

At Real Art Ways in Hartford, tonight they open “Beyond the Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary,” a documentary about LEGOs, their global fan base, and innovative uses.  Also opening is “A Borrowed Identity,” about a Palestenian boy trying to fit in with his Jewish schoolmates at boarding school.  Both run through and beyond the weekend. Tonight Trinity College’s Cinestudio opens “The Third Man,” a restoration of the 1949 classic Cold War tale that takes place in occupied Vienna.  Starring Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, and Orson Welles, it is released on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Welles. Details at cinestudio.org

Films on Foss is a pilot open-air movie series happening in Middletown at Foss Hill on the Wesleyan Campus.  A brainchild of the Mayoral Youth Cabinet, they’re bringing you “Frozen” this Saturday at 7. Visit arts2go.org

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05-6:30pm, it'll be Covering the Beatles - Take a ride forward and backward on a "Magical Mystery Tour." An exploration of covers of Beatles songs by new artists and early rock and roll tunes covered by the Beatles.            
From 6:30-7pm its Radio Curious from Pacifica.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In Hartford tonight, Monday Night Jazz in Bushnell Park continues its 48th annual season at 6, opening with Ricky Alfonso and headlining Jonathan Finlayson and Sicilian Defense.  Sponsored by the Hartford Jazz Society, the series runs through August.  More at http://www.bushnellpark.org

Tonight, the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown has Moments of Gratitude at 7:45, followed at 8 by the Anything Goes Open Mic.  On Friday they bring you Layers and Frames, a Philly-based duo with world music, folk, and more.  On Saturday at 4 there’s a guitar workshop with Japanese performer/composer Hiroya Tsukamoto. Later at 8, he performs Cinematic Guitar Poetry. On Sunday at 7, the Great Make Believe Improv Show brings you Comedy for the Family. www.buttonwood.org

Down in New Haven at Toad’s Place tonight, it’s the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence. On Friday they’ve got Big Jim’s Birthday Bash with a host of artists performing.  It’s Summer Slamfest 5 on Saturday. www.toadsplace.com

Also in New Haven tonight, at Café Nine, you can catch Dr. Martino, Grotto Girl, and Standby.  On Tuesday it’s Astrophest Day 1, headlining Jose Oyola and the Astronauts, Ceschi, and more.  Wednesday they continue with Astrophest Day 2, featuring Joey Batts and Them, Chaser Eight, and others.  On Thursday they’ve got David Poe, Winterpills, and Sam Perduta. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Helwigs this week, followed at 9 by Five in the Chamber and River Whyless. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session features Mike Coppola and Friends, with Rideyna, Mercy Choir, and The Tet Offensive coming your way later at 9.

Up in Hartford, at Blackeyed Sally’s, tonight’s Jazz Mondays features the Steve Porter Group. On Tuesday, Michael Palin’s Orchestra brings you new material.  Wednesday’s Blues Jam is with Tim McDonald this week.  On Friday, it’s a double-header, with Damon Fowler and Jason Ricci taking the stage. Saturday’s headliner is The Kinsey Report, with brothers Donald and Ralph and their legacy blues sound.  www.blackeyedsallys.com.

You can support Connecticut’s Farmer’s Markets and enjoy healthy food while you’re at it! The East Haddam Farmer’s market happens every Wednesday from 4 to 7, Durham’s is on Thursdays from 3 to 6. The Clinton market is every Thursday from 4 to 7. Middletown’s North End farmers market is on Friday from 10 to 2. There’s one in Higganum Village on Friday from 3:30 to 6:30, and in Cromwell on Friday from 4 to 7. On the shore, in Old Saybrook markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Chester market is open on Sundays from 10 to 1. Middletown’s long-running market on the South Green runs Tuesdays and Thursdays through October. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, the run of “Cartel Land,” a riveting look at two vigilante groups battling the Mexican drug cartels, continues.  Also continuing is “Wild Tales,” a Spanish comedy/mystery about the thin line between civilization and barbarism.  Both run through Thursday.  On Friday they open “Beyond the Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary,” a documentary about LEGOs, their global fan base, and innovative uses.  Also opening is “A Borrowed Identity,” about a Palestenian boy trying to fit in with his Jewish schoolmates at boarding school.  Both run through the weekend.  http://www.realartways.org

Tonight Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues its run of  “The Farewell Party,” an Israeli comedy about nursing home residents in Jerusalem inventing new ways to die with dignity. On Friday they open “The Third Man,” a restoration of the 1949 classic Cold War tale that takes place in occupied Vienna.  Starring Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, and Orson Welles, the restoration is released on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Welles.  Details at www.cinestudio.org

After the Jive stay tuned for Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry until 6 p.m., when it’s time for Think Twice Radio with Al Robinson, a locally produced “watchdog” public affairs show covering Connecticut issues in a nonpartisan manner.

After that its Michael Benson’s 75% Folk followed by  Chip Austin’s Unfocused Folk at 8pm.
At 9:30 we switch (audio) gears for Aargh!!! with Tom Gatzen, who’ll provide two hours of  loud music from stoner and cosmic rock to doom, avant garde and more!


From 1-2 a.m. Maximum Rock and Roll Radio keeps the loud rock music pumping.
Then we switch gears again for “In Other News,” a weekly public affairs show from Pacifica exploring topics that range from the conspiratorial and controversial to esoterics near the fringe of belief systems.

At
3 a.m. we’ll rebroadcast today’s noontime edition of Democracy Now with Amy Goodman before switching over to the BBC world news at 4.   Morning Edition comes your way at 5 a.m. each weekday here at WESU.
