02-03-15 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday, February 3rd, and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day, and the best in free-form community programming week-nights and weekends.

Here’s some of what’s going on in our area this week.  Keep in mind that the weather has likely closed many of tonight’s events. I’ll list what has been scheduled for the week but with the current conditions and more snow in the forecast this week, you should definitely check with any venue for cancellations before heading out.
Tonight at the Buttonwood, there’s Laughter Yoga at 6, followed by a vegetarian potluck at the Buttonwood. 
Thursday’s Open Mic is hosted by Bob Gotta this week.   

On Friday at 7 they bring you Royal Guru Master Yastaban and the Royal Yastaband, with special guest Dr. Apes.  

The Aligned with Source workshop series with Annaita Gandhy continues this Saturday at 10:30. This week’s theme is Laughter In Your Life.  At 1 there’s a Free Poet’s Collective, followed at 8 with traditional acoustic bluegrass featuring Charter Oak Bluegrass.  

Sunday’s worship service at 10 is with Rev. Ronnie Bantum and at 11 with Pastor Sandra Steele. Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday at about 1 p.m. Help prepare the meal at First Church on Court Street at 11:30. Sunday night the Great Make Believe Improv Show happens at 7 p.m.  Next Monday morning at 10:30 the Hearing Voices Network meets.   http://www.buttonwood.org.

In New Haven tonight, at Cafe Nine, Manic Productions brings you Mo Lowda & The Humble, Forest & The Evergreens, and Elison Jackson.  On Wednesday, the Peter Karp & Sue Foley Band takes the stage, along with Chris D’Amato.   Thursday they bring you Toyz, If Jesus Had Machine Guns, and King Panos. Friday’s eary show at 5pm features Buzz Gordo’s Ski Lodge, followed at 9 by bill featuring Intercourse, Empty Vessels, Kings and Liars, and Sperm Donor. Saturday afternoon’s Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and at 9 you can catch The Hempsteadys, The Screw-Ups, Head with Wings, and Wasted Days. Also this week in New Haven, at Toad’s Place, tonight it’s the Woah Tour, presented by Round2Crew, with Dylan Holland and Alyssa Shouse.  On Thursday they present, along with RJ Julia Booksellers, Marky Ramone and his book “Punk Rock Blitzkrieg:  My Life as a Ramone,” with VIP seating beginning at 6 and a conversation with Toad’s Place President Brian Phelps. Also on Thursday, there’s the Bright Night 12: Electro Glow Party.  Friday’s featured artist is Kap Slap at 9, and they also bring you Cosmic Dust Bunnies and others for a show at 8. On Sunday at 9, Simon Posford presents Shpongletron 3.1, with Phutureprimitive. www.toadsplace.com has the complete line-up.

Up in Hartford, Blackeyed Sally’s brings Michael Palin's Other Orchestra, an 18-piece band working out new material. Wednesday’s Blues Jam is with Ed Bradley.  On deck for Friday is 7 Below bringing you A Phish Tribute. Tomorrow evening, Manic Productions brings you Semicircle (members of Reptar), White Violet, and Spectral Fangs at Bar in New Haven.  On Thursday they feature Into It. Over It. at Center Church on the Green, also in New Haven.  Saturday’s performers at The Ballroom at the Outer Space in Hamden include Nick Thune, Ben Kronberg, and Kate Berlant.  On Sunday at 3 they’ve got a Hundred Waters Listening Party at The Outer Space in Hamden.  http://www.manicproductions.org

At Infinity Hall in Hartford, this Wednesday there’s Trivia Night in the Bistro hosted by BaR Rated Trivia at 8.  On Thursday, it’s the XG Extreme Guitar Tour featuring Uli Roth, Vinnie Moore, and others at 8.  You can hear some funk and R&B on Friday with Robert Randolph and the Family Band.  On Saturday, funk and jazz come your way with Maceo Parker and special guest Gedeon Luke & the People.  On Sunday it’s the Bob Marley Birthday Bash featuring Anita Antoinette, Jesse Royal and more.  All details at http://www.infinityhall.com

Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts offers an Artist Talk in CFA Hall this Thursday at 5:30 with dancer/choreographer Eiko Otake and photographer William Johnston, who discuss their collaborative exhibition “A Body in Fukushima.”  A walking tour of the exhibit follows the talk.  At 8 on Thursday, they bring author Daniel Handler to Memorial Chapel for the Russell House Prose and Poetry Series.  Best known for his Lemony Snicket series, he’ll be reading from new work.  On Friday and Saturday, Montreal’s Companie Marie Chouinard performs two new dance works in the CFA Theater at 8.  On Sunday at 3, finger guitarist Stephen Bennett presents original compositions of the Beatles, Ennio Morricone, and Elmer Bernstein in The Russell House.  Details at http://www.wesleyan.edu/cfa.

Honoring Black History Month, the Hartford Public Library presents “Nonviolence in a Time of Civil Unrest:  A Conversation with Legendary Civil Rights Leader Dr. Bernard Lafayette, Jr.,” this Thursday at 5:30 at the downtown library.  http://www.hplct.org

Thursday is the opening reception of “Ear Candy,” an earring show at Wesleyan Potters Gallery/Shop, and features bluegrass music by Arrowhead.  There are one-of-a-kind earrings from twenty-six jewelers, and the show runs through March 15.  The Gallery is located at 350 S. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
At Real Art Ways in Hartford, they continue their run of the 2015 Oscar Shorts, offering you three sets to choose from including Animated, and Live Action, which run through February 22nd, and two Documentary series which run through the end of this week.  Their Speak Up series of live story-telling happens this Saturday at 8, under the theme of “Office Space.”  Full details at www.realartways.com.

At Trinity College’s Cinestudio, the run of “The Babadook” continues tonight.  This Australian thriller involves a young widow and her eight-year-old son who start reading a pop-up book with unexpected results.  Tomorrow, they open “Top Five,” written and directed by, and starring, Chris Rock, about a comedic actor who wants to make a serious film but ends up disappointing his fans.  It runs through Saturday.  On Sunday they bring back “Ida,” a Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Film, about a Polish novice in a nunnery who discovers her family is Jewish, and takes a trip with her aunt to discover the truth about her parents.  www.cinestudio.org.

From 6:30 its Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill for 90 minutes of  Folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriter, Americana, real country, all roots oriented music with concert listings at 7pm and frequent ticket giveaways.
At 8pm stay tuned for The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry, a weekly show featuring the area’s finest artists and musicians of every genre.

From 9-10:30pm DJ Cheshire Cat presents Wonderland, a free form genre crossing music show.
 At 10:30-tonight  DJ Zing and DJ Ping offer Fastest Gun in the West, with
Two Western gals, one radio show, and a lot of trouble. Tune in for a smattering of music and tales of the Old West.

From 11:30-12:30am its Thinking out Loud with DJ Stinky, a Contemplation through music and audio art.
At 12:30am  Fictive Sound with DJ LN presents a new soundtrack on each show inspired by an adored novel.
From 1:30-2:30am            its  The Blast Zone with Baggins and the G-O who will journey, drill, grab, sing, and banter our way through the wild world of sports.

From 2:30-3:30am stay tuned for  Occupy Radio from Pacifica, An extended conversation about the issues which gave rise to the Occupy Movement.

3:30-4am it's The Graveyard Shift with DJ Otto Nation
