Good evening, it's Wednesday, January 7th, and this is the Jive at Five – our daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day, and the best in free-form community programming week-nights and weekends.

Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week

:
At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, tomorrow,the Free At Last Players perform at 7pm.  They’re a not-for-profit theater group dedicated to dispelling misconceptions about mental illness.  On Friday at 8, contemporary folk is presented by Seat of Our Pants (SOOP), with an opening performance by Kali Stoddard-Imari.  On Saturday night, you can catch Turkish-born jazz guitarist/composer Sinan Bakir.  Sunday’s worship service at 10 is with Reverend Ronnie Bantum, followed by Pastor Sandra Steele at 11.  At 1 p.m., Food Not Bombs serves food in front of the Buttonwood.  Help prepare the vegetarian meal at 11:30 at First Church on Court Street.  http://www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, at Cafe Nine,  it’s Goodnight Moonshine featuring Molly Venter, along with Kristin Andreassen (Uncle Earl) with Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers).  On Thursday, SLV and Olive Tiger take the Café Nine stage at 8.  On Friday at 5, the Weekly Wind-down Happy Hour features DJ Fast Eddy and DJ Dave Coon, followed at 9 by a Tribute To Elvis show with a host of performers. Saturday afternoon’s Jazz Jam Session at 4:30 is with Gary Grippo & Friends, with the 8 p.m. show later featuring Jovial Crew and The Amples for a St. Patrick’s Day Parade Fundraiser. Sunday at 3 brings the Die Hipster Records Showcase, and the Original Sunday Night Jam at 8 features the George Baker Band.  www.cafenine.com

Up in Hartford, at Black-eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday night Blues Jam hosted by Ed Bradley this week. Friday night they bring the Mike Crandall Band with Special Guests to the stage for a Memphis Fundraiser. The Fundraiser continues on Saturday at 9 with The Boogie Boys.More at www.blackeyedsallys.com  

On Thursday at 7, at the Russell Library in Middletown, the Veteran’s Writing Group will meet.  http://www.russelllibrary.org

The Art Guild of Middletown presents a colored-pencil demonstration by artist George Aresco this Thursday at the Woodside Intermediate School in Cromwell.  http://www.middletownartguild.org

Down in New Haven, at Toad’s Place, on Thursday there’s a Local Rock Showcase starting at 6:30, with The Elwoods, From the Depths, and much more.  On Friday, Big Jim Presents brings you Murray The Wheel’s CD Release show, along with other performers.  Saturday night is the Bright Night 10: Electro Glow Party with a list of performers.  www.toadsplace.com for more.

Up in Hartford, at Infinity Hall, on Thursday there’s the Balkun Brothers CD Release Party with Special Guest West End Blend at 8.  On Friday, you can hear blues and rock with Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters.  On Saturday at 8, there’s Back in Black – the AC/DC Tribute show. www.infinityhall.com.

The Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival happens this Saturday and Sunday at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford.  This Renaissance-period festival celebrates the Christmas story and the arrival of the three kings, and includes live music, dance, and drama. http://www.ahcc.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

At Real Art Ways in Hartford the run of “The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness,” a rare look inside the Japanese animation Studio Ghibli with Director Hayao Miyazaki, continues through tomorrow.  Also on screen at Real Art Ways, through tomorrow is “Antartica:  A Year on Ice,” a documentary following the scientists, technicians and craftsmen who live year-round on the Antarctic continent.   On Friday, they open a run of “The Great Invisible,” a documentary about the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.   www.realartways.com.

Cinestudio at Trinity College reopens tomorrow with OutFilm CT’s sceening of “4 Moons,” a tour of gay men’s lives in 21st century Mexico City, where secrets still have the power to poison relationships.  On Friday and Saturday they’re showing “St. Vincent,” starring Bill Murray as a retiree providing after school care for a stressed single mother. On Sunday they begin a run of “Whiplash,” about a jazz drummer striving for greatness with a mentor that puts a drill sergeant to shame.  More at http://www.cinestudio.org

Right after the Jive at Five, stay tuned for: The Explorer’s Hour with Pickup Sticks for an exploration into the realm of indie rock and roll.

From 6-6:30, it's Mind Matters with Helen Evrard, M.D. The show provides information and guest interviews on issues concerning mental illness. The focus is exploring holistic therapies and stories of individual achievement.

At 6:30-8pm it's Fusion Radio with James Fusion. Techno from around the globe mixed live since 1992. It's a vinyl world!

And from 8-9:30pm, it's The Warehouse with Mike NyceThe best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

Starting at 9:30 it's The Vault with DJ Anton Banks. On the air since 1996! The Vault presents listeners with the very latest in hard techno, minimal tech-house, and leftfield mixed live each week. Regularly featuring exclusive music and mix sets from international producers and DJs.

And from 1am til 4,  we go into our mid year automation of music that you'll all enjoy.

The BBC world news kicks on at 4 and we start tomorrow’s broadcast day at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
