Good evening, it's Friday, August 30th.  This is the Jive at Five - our daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends.  I'm Ben Michael, Thanks for tuning in!  Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week.

 Tonight. at 8pm, The Buttonwood in Middletown presents a rare opportunity to catch "From New Orleans to New England: Avery Sharpe & Charles Neville Duo" featuring the legendary sax man, Charles Neville best known for his role as one of The Neville Brothers.  Saturday evening, at 8pm, drummer and percussionist YORON ISRAEL brings his jazz quartet, “High Standards” (featuring Lance Bryant, saxophone, Laszio Gardony, piano and Henry Lugo, bass) to The Buttonwood Tree to perform selections from their recent CD, “VISIONS, The Music of Stevie Wonder” . On Sundays, Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood at 1pm. All are welcome. You are also invited to help prepare the vegetarian meal beforehand at 11am at First Church Congregational on Court Street.  Sunday night brings The Great Make Believe Society’s  Improv Comedy Show. www.buttonwood.org for more info.

Down in New Haven tonight at Café nine, Ego Free Productions presents The George Baker Band and The Convertibles for a night of Rhythm and Blues.  Saturday’s Afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by Billy Cofrances and Friends. Saturday night The Kevin St. James Band takes the Café Nine Stage. The Sunday-After-Supper-Jam features Travis Moody's last jam. www.cafenine.com for details.

As students head back to school and the tree leaves start to turn, we head into Agricultural Fair season here in CT. This weekend you can head over the river and through the woods to catch the 102nd Haddam Neck Fair. The Haddam Neck Fair opens Friday afternoon at 4pm and continues for 4 days throughout the entire labor day weekend closing Monday at 4pm. evening. This fair features live music, concessions, a petting zoo, a food court, agricultural exhibits, a traveling circus, children's contests, and the ever-popular draft animal-, truck-, and tractor pulls! Friday night's entertainment kicks off with local bands Rock Landing and Gate keepers. Saturday's entertainment features kicks off at 2pm with the Monthei Brothers Band. Poor Old Shine takes the stage at 7pm. Sunday's bill includes   Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters , Hot Day At The Zoo, and Shakedown! details online at www.haddamneckfair.com

Sunday morning  at 10am Acoustic Guitarist & Crooner, Dave Downs Makes His Monthly Stop at Brew Bakers on Main St in Middletown. He’ll be performing popular American songs from the 30's, 40's, 50's & beyond - 860-852-0034 for info.

The Shaped Note Singers gather at the home of Neely Bruce this Sunday, from 4 to 6 p.m. All are welcome and invited to bring a dish to share for the potluck follows the singing. Contact nbruce@wesleyan.edu for further information or directions.

Several farmers' markets in our area are still in full swing. In Middletown, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Halloween, there's a longstanding farmer’s market on the South Green. Through October 25th, on Fridays in Middletown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., The North End Farmers Market happens in the parking lot of It's Only Natural Market on Main St., near the intersection of Liberty St. from  www.northendfarmersmarket.org. 

In Durham, the farmers' market is on Thursdays, on the town green through September 12. In Cromwell, on Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m., the farmers' market is at Covenant Village through September 26 with live entertainment weekly from 4-5pm.  Through October 25th, in Higganum, there’s a market on Fridays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m on the town green. In East Haddam, there's a farmers' market from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at the town grange on Town Street through October 2nd. Real Art Ways in Hartford has extended their run of the documentary, Free the Mind, in which Richard Davidson examines the nature of consciousness to offer new hope for soldiers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Tonight Real Art Ways begins a run of "Ain’t in it for My Health: A Film about Levon Helm". Directed by Jacob Hatley, this intimate documentary finds the late, four-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member at home in Woodstock, NY, in the midst of creating his 2007 acclaimed comeback album, Dirt Farmer. www.realartways.com for details.

Tonight and tomorrow, Cinestudio, The Trinity College cinema in Hartford is showing  The Way Back a summer family drama starring Steve Carrell that has been described as "Sharp, and tender, and extremely funny.” Sunday Cinestudio begins a run of Frances Ha, a funny tribute the broke yet filled with hope 20 something’s in NYC. www.cinestudio.org for information

At 6:30 until 8pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

At 11pm, it’s In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with 
Dope Dave - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 2, to 3am it's the Bassment Beats – the Real Hip-Hop is over here.

The next hour 'til 4am it's Maximum Rock & Roll Radio - A weekly radio show featuring the best international DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll radio record collection.

+Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
