Here’s a rundown of some of the cultural and entertaining event happening in our region this week.

Right here in Middletown. Wednesday night The Buttonwood’s Buddhist Film series presents: Amongst White Clouds Buddhist Hermit Masters of China’s Zhongnan Mountains. Friday night Pesky J. Nixon stops at the buttonwood tree for an evening of compelling harmonies and narratives drawing on Zydeco style accordion, virtuosic mandolin, a variety of tribal percussion, and a myriad of string instrumentation. On Saturday mornings The Buttonwood Tree presents Qigong (cheegung), Tai-chi, yoga and self empowerment workshops starting at 7:30am.

Saturday night bassist and jazz composer Joe Fonda returns to the Buttonwood stage with two of Italy’s greatest jazz musicians: Carlo Morena on Piano and Michele Salgarello on Drums.for an evening of hard swing jazz with a pinch of European romanticism. Sunday brings the Monthly Poetry pot luck gathering to the buttonwood. Sunday evening at 7pm you can catch Klezwoods at the buttonwood tree. Klezwoods is an amalgam of strings, horns and percussion that melds the spirit of traditional klezmer and Balkan music with modern grooves, improvisation and original repertoire. Tonight at 7pm here in Middletown, the Russell Reader discuss the poetry of Robert Frost. The Russell knitters gather at 11am Saturday morning and invite knitter novice and accomplished to join them to share tips n tricks. The Vermont based Michele Fay Band, an acoustic quartet that features original and roots music, will perform on Saturday, May 18, 2pm in the Hubbard Room at Russell Library. At Cafe 9 in New Haven tonight you can catch Bronson Rock w/ Phantom Pluckers featuring Brian Torff for an evening of obscure soul, rockabilly and garage rock classics. On Thursday modern-day blues troubadour "Brownbird Rudy Relic;" plays with Orb Mellon and Jason Prince. Friday at Cafe 9 "Paper Hill Casket Company, Castle, and Milksop: Unsung make for an evening of alternative Americana music. This Saturday Café Nine’s "SATURDAY AFTERNOON JAZZ JAM," will be hosted Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Later on Saturday at 9 pm, "FAKE FOUR Presents: A Benefit Concert for A Probable Koz," in memory of Rob Koziura, featuring Ceschi & Anonymous Inc. I CON the Mic King; Passage (of Anticon) & Ordeal . Sunday May from 3 to 7pm, there will be a benefit for "TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS" featuring Life On the Sideline; Those Guys; Skyline for A day of music and community. Sunday at 8pm "MANIC PRODUCTIONS Presents: Coliseum, w/ California X, and 2 Ton Bug." For a night of loud rock. More online at www.cafenine.com

 

At Toad's Place in New Haven on Wednesday, you can catch "LOUDPVCK & M|O|D." at Toads.
Wednesday night at 10 pm bvrings Toad’s weekly "Electronic Dance Music NIGHT featuring ELECTRO / DUBSTEP / HOUSE / Etc, Then on Thursday Juicy J, featuring A$AP Ferg takes the Toads Main stage.
This Friday you can catch "AFTON PRESENTS…IN Toad’s LILLY’S PAD." featuring over 10 bands. Also on Friday Toad's present "Shakedown playing The Dead and Beyond," on the Main stage with "String Band" and "Father Time." Opening the show. Saturday afternoon at 4pm New Haven's Battle of the Bands takes the Toad place Lilly Pad stage, featuring Red River Soul, Temporarily Famous, Low Key Confusion, Nova Paradox, The Hail, The Planets, Fading Tides, JellyFace, and Credible Evidence.

On Thursdays, May 16 through June 20, Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater in Middletown presents, Hear What's In The Heart - A Shoemaker's Tale. A one man show by Steven Scionti, set against the backdrop of a post-funeral gathering to celebrate the life of his grandfather, Angelo Morello (who owned Angleo's Shoe Repair on Main Street in Middletown). www.oddfellows.org

The City Singers of Hartford will perform “A Chorus of Peace” at the Wesleyan University Chapel, 221 High Street in Middletown, on Saturday, May 18 at 7pm. This is a benefit event for Artists for World Peace. As part of the evening, Artists for World Peace will host an art show and sale adjacent to the chapel, in the Zelnick Pavilion. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut.

Through Thursday, Real Artways in Hartford presents "Hava Nagila", which reveals the power of one song to express and sustain identity, to transmit lessons across generations and to bridge cultural divides and connect us all on a universal level. Also showing through Wednesday, you can catch "To The Wonder," which boldly and lyrically explores the complexities of love in all its forms. Today  Real Artways’ "Science on Screen: features Little Shop of Horrors." Opening Friday, at Real Art Ways is "The Reluctant Fundamentalist," a story about conflicting ideologies where perception and suspicion have the power to determine life or death. Tonight at CineStudio, Trinity College's cinema in Hartford, continues a run of Pablo Berger's distinctive BlancaNieves, a new silent film version of Snow White that pays tribute to the original Gothic dark romanticism of the Brothers' Grimm. On Wednesday, cinestudio kicks off a run of "Place Beyond The Pines," starring Ryan Gosling as a stunt motorcycle rider who turns to crime to support his young son. Saturday at Cinestudio " NT Live Presents THIS House." It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation.

+Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.
