Tuesday, April 2nd


Good afternoon, it's April 2nd, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I am Isabelle, host of the fuss, a biweekly free interview show on Fridays from 2:00-2:30.

Here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this week:


We are in the midst of Thesis season for Wesleyan’s graduating seniors. This means lots of opportunities to catch free visual art openings, music recital, and stage productions. For a full rundown, you can check out the Wesleyan Center for the arts website www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Wednesday, April 3rd at 8 P.M, Writing at Wesleyan presents a reading by Award-winning Author Colum McCann at Russell House, 350 High Street, Middletown, CT. Acclaimed author, Colum McCann, will read from his recent book, Let The Great World Spin, which has been described by Esquire as the first major post-9/11 novel.


WESU is a sponsor of "Music & Public Life", a year long exploration presented by Wesleyan University, featuring Time Stands Still, a festival/conference dedicated to musical notation. Wednesday, April 3 through Saturday, April 6, featuring the U.S. premiere of the London based choir The Vocal Constructivists performing the U.S. premieres of works by Wesleyan's own music professors Ronald Kuivila and Paula Matthusen. Thursday, April 4 from 5:00-7:00 pm Wesleyan University’s Davison Art Center presents an exhibition opening: "Artists Take Action: Protest Posters Today" and gallery talk at 5:30 pm by Lori Gruen, Professor of Philosophy, Environmental Studies, and Feminist, Gender & Sexuality Studies. Tonight at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown at 6:00pm is "Laughter Yoga with Mimi Claire + Happy Healthy Vegetarian Potluck." Thursday at 7:00pm is "Open Mic with Rob Gotta," Sign Ups start at 6:30, come play and be heard. Friday at 7:30pm at The Buttonwood is "The 8th Annual CT Jazz Composers and Improvisers Festival (Presented by Joe Fonda.) Saturday at 7:30am is "Saturday Morning Qigong (Chi Kung)" Later on Saturday morning at 8:45am is "Community Yoga and Tai Chi." Followed by At 10:30 am by the "Aligned with Source Workshop for Empowerment." And Sunday at 1pm at the buttonwood is "Food Not Bombs," “Cooking for Peace and Social Justice.” Food Not Bombs shares food about 2 pm in front of the Buttonwood. Anyone is welcome. Consider yourself invited to help prepare vegetarian food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am. And Sunday at 3pm is "Tipples" – International Improvised Music. And Sunday at 7pm is the "Great Make Believe Improv Show." Watch The Great Make Believe Society perform different kinds of improv comedy!


Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s, tonight at 8 p.m. it's "Michael Palin's Other Orchestra." Wednesday at 8pm its "Blues Jam/Brandt Taylor." And thursday starting at 8pm is "The Truck Stop Troubadors."

In New Haven tonight at Café Nine at 9pm, DrinkDeeply presents "If Jesus Had Machine Guns, and Lock 12. On wednesday at 8pm is "The Goddamn (note: don’t say this word on air for FCC violations) Gallows" and "American Speedway. On Thursday at 8pm MANIC PRODUCTIONS Presents: Spirit Family Reunion; w/ Christopher Paul Stelling; and Goodnight Blue Moon.

Friday at 5 p.m. at Cafe nine you can catch "We Dat Brass Band." Followed at 9pm by: Barmaids (members of The Eventide); w/ Progress. On Saturday, April 6th, at 4:30pm, its "Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam," w/ host Mike Coppola Group. followed at 9 by: "CIRCUS DELECTI , 11-YEAR ANNIVERSARY MASQUERADE BALL." And then Sunday at Cafe Nine, starting at 2pm, its LIPGLOSS CRISIS BURLESQUE & CABARET FUNDRAISER!! Come help Lipgloss Crisis raise funds to start a storefront studio in New Haven to host arts shows, events, and mentor inner city children with art.

Also in New Haven, over at Toad’s Place, tonight at 7:30 pm is "JOEY BADA$$ and PRO ERA," a part of the "Beast Coastal Tour," also featuring Flatbush Zombies, The Underachievers, and DJ Statik Selektah. Wednesday at 7:30 at Toads is "CONSPIRATOR," along with "The Cosmic Dust Bunnies." Later on Wednesday Night at 10pm is "EDM Night" . On Thursday at Toad's its "UP TO NO GOOD TOUR w/HEADLINER MIKE STUD," also featuring "OCD (Moosh & Twist)," "Huey Mack," and "Jitta On the Track." This Friday at Toad's starting at 7pm, MINDSNAP MUSIC PRESENTS: “CHAINED BY SABBATH” Featuring "Sludge Factory (Alice In Chains Tribute)," "Earth (Black Sabbath Tribute)," "Lightsbane," "Goat Herder," "Fear Apparent," "Risk All in Life," and more to be announced. Saturday at 9:3o pm at Toad's is "THE ORIGINAL SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY."

Tonight at 7:30pm, Adult students from ARTFARM Artistic Director Marcella Trowbridge's Shakespeare Acting Laboratory will share their work in this informal showcase of scenes and monologues from Shakespeare. The public is invited to this free event at Middlesex Community College in Chapman Hall’s Room 808. www.art-farm.org

Thursday evening at 6:30pm Author Elisabeth Petry continues The Veterans' Writing Group in Meeting Room 2 at Russell Library on Broad St in Middletown. American pop, country and folk singer/songwriter and guitarist Michael Johnson will perform on Thursday, at 7pm in the Hubbard Room at Russell Library.

The Russell Knitters will meet on from 11:00am-1pm in Meeting Room 3 You are encouraged to bring your knitting projects and join an enthusiastic group of knitters who are willing to share ideas and expertise. No registration is required. More online at www.russelllibrary.org

Sunday April 7th brings WESU’s Annual Spring Record Fair and Sale to Wesleyan’s Fayerweather Beckham Hall on Wyllys Avenue in Middletown from 11am-4pm. WESU Record Fairs feature dozens of vendors selling thousand of records, cds and music of all genres in all formats plus WESU gear, Prizes food and WESU DJs spinning vinyl Live. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, is "Monday Matinée: Jour de Fête" with 1pm refreshments, and 1:30pm screening followed by a discussion after. And tonight through thursday, at 5pm and 7:30pm brings, "A Fierce Green Fire,"

the first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement, grassroots and global activism spanning fifty years, from conservation to climate change."; Tomorrow at 6pm at Real Artways is "Real Board (games)" They provide the games! Bring your friends and, if you want, a game or two that you don't think they'll have. Opening Friday at RealArtways is a showing of "On The Road," Based on Jack Kerouc's beloved American novel. From 6:30-8pm Bill Revill brings us Acoustic Blender, featuring another 90 minutes of Folk, Americana, and roots music.


At 8 pm Voice of The City with J Cherry presents an hour of live local arts and culture.


At 9pm its Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat who’s got a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers.
10:30-11:30 is radical roots with DJ pitbull Revolution and DJ Euphonius.

After that Hardly Strictly Bluegrass with DJ Sleepy Girl is on till 12:30

From 12:30-1:30 is Six Degrees of Separation with Monica

And from 1:30-2:30 is Declan MacManus, International Art Thief with DJ Moe

Then Romancipation with Dr. Love until 3:00am.
