Friday's Jive 11-16-12


Good evening, it's Friday, November 16th, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. Here's a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area:

This weekend the Vintage Players present "Chasing Manet" at Green Street Arts Center. All but this evening's show are sold out. For reservations call 860.685.7797

Tonight at 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 8pm in the CFA Theater, “The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy," created and performed by Rinde Eckert about a man raised by wolves, will be performed. Also tonight the Dither Electric Guitar Quartet performs at Crowell Concert Hall at 7:15. It's a presentation of the Wesleyan music department and the Center for the Arts. Saturday at 2, there will be a lecture by art historian and curator RoseLee Goldberg in CFA Hall where she will discuss ideas in her upcoming book, “Performance Now.” At 8 p.m. Saturday, the Wesleyan Orchestra Winter Concert, under the baton of music director Peter Hadley, brings a symphonic repertoire from the 19th and 20th centuries to Crowell Concert Hall. The concert is free.

Tonight at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s Songwriter Sessions, showcasing four of New England’s female emerging artists playing all acoustic and in the round. The four are Lara Herscovitch, Joanne Lurgio, Lisa Martin and WESU’s own DJ Lauren “Bliss” Agnelli. On Saturday at 7pm at The Buttonwood Tree, The Free At Last Players will present 'A Very Berzerkeley Christmas'. The Free At Last Players are a performance troupe formed 21 years ago for the purpose of dispelling the myths and misconceptions that surround mental illness. Sunday, and every Sunday, at about 1 p.m. in front of the Buttonwood Tree, Food Not Bombs serves vegetarian food. You’re invited to help prepare the meal at 11:30 a.m. at the First Church on Court Street and all are welcome to the meal. Learn about all Buttonwood events at www.buttonwood.org

Tonight at the Canoe Club at Harbor Park here in Middletown it's painist and vocalist, Tre Davis. from 5:30 to 8:30 PM.

At 7:30 pm tonight and tomorrow evening Oddfellows Playhouse Teen Rep Company presents Shakespeare's Land Of The Dead: A True Account of the Zombie Plague of 1599. Is artistic integrity ever worth dying for? Visit oddfellows.org

There will be a Halloween Around The World Masquerade Ball at mac650 gallery, 650 Main St. here in Middletown. Come out and support your local artists. Closing reception show is a Masquerade Ball Saturday from 7-midnight.

The Eric Kuhn Group (Eric Kuhn, Bruce Elder, Tim Gaylord, Joseph Getter, Dave Rintoul, Lars Selberg, Kate TenEyck) is appearing at the Cypress Grill on South Main St. in Middletown on Sunday at 6 pm. More at ericwardkuhn.com

Down in New Haven at Toad’s Place tonight the award-winning Grateful Dead cover band Shakedown returns, with Forbin and Standard Practice. Saturday, it’s the “Wobble Wobble” Bassgiving Edm Party, with Knowledge, Jay K., Mike Skillz, Deph, Joey Fedz, HighLife, Jiggawompz, and Delusional Society. Sunday brings Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to Toad’s for "The Heist" World Tour, with Special Guest DEE-1 and Xperience. More at toadsplace.com.

At Café Nine in New Haven tonight, it’s The Steel Wheels; w/ Winter White. Then Saturday at 4:30 it’s the  Afternoon Jazz Jam w/ host Tony Dioguardi and Friends, followed by the Sarah Borges Band at 9. Sunday at Café Nine, it’s The Joe Krown Trio. More can be found at cafenine.com.

Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight it’s Heather "Lil' Mama" Hardy. And Saturday, the Roberto Morbioli Band plays at Sally’s. More can be found at blackeyedsallys.com.

Saturday night at Tools Bar and Grill on 136 Main Street in New Britain it's the Hardware City Jazz Series, presenting the Colbys. The show starts at 9PM. For more information visit thecolbysband.com

Now let’s take a look at cinema off the beaten path in Central Connecticut.

At Real Art Ways in Hartford tonight and Saturday the showing is of Compliance, telling the chilling story of just how far one might go to obey a figure of authority. Also, through to the middle of next week, it’s Photographic Memory, in which filmmaker Ross McElwee finds himself in frequent conflict with his son, a defiant young adult who seems addicted to and distracted by the virtual worlds of the internet. Then Sunday,The Story Of Film: An Odyssey continues with Part 6: “The Arrival of Multiplexes and Asian Mainstream” (1970s); and “Fight the Power: Protest in Film.” More details can be found at realartways.org.

Over at Cinestudio, Trinity College's movie theater, tonight and tomorrow they are presenting Seven Psychopaths with a cast that includes Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, Harry Dean Stanton and Woody Harrelson. Then Sunday begins screenings of Barrymore with Christopher Plummer, and the film 17 Girls. Learn more at cinestudio.org.

For the next half hour, until 7pm you have the Middletown Youth Radio Project - A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7, until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

At 1:30am we go

until 3am - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At 3, to 4am it's the Bassment Beats – the Real Hip-Hop is over here.

from 4 to 5am, on a mission to preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making folk music a part of our everyday lives.

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s

 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
