Good evening, it's Wednesday, September 30th, and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day, and the best in free-form community programming weeknights and weekends.

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight they host Improvisational Jazz Night with Evan Park, Ned Rothenberg, Joe Morris, and Brad Barrett at 7:30 pm. You can catch Upstart Festival featuring Two Fisted Law, Hudson Falcons, and many more this Thursday, doors open at 12 pm. Ryan Montbleau with Frank Viele play on Friday at 9 pm. Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford present's their Wednesday’s Blues Jam with Tim Mcdonald at 8 pm. On Thursday it’s a special one time performance band, French Conn-ection, featuring Pete Perfido at 8:30 pm. On Friday they bring you The Old Royals and Relative Souls at 9 pm. The R. Luke Dubois - in Real Time Exhibition continues its third week at Wesleyan's Zilkha Gallery, visiting hours noon-5pm. The Community Partners in Action Prison Arts Exhibit at Russell Library, is also continuing its run this week, featuring paintings and drawings from five formally incarcerated Connecticut artists. On Thursday at 5, the Buttonwood Tree hosts the  Art Walk, followed by Bob Gotta in his long running monthly acoustic open mic at 6:30. Also on Thursday, at the Green Street Teaching and Learning Center at 6 pm, is the opening reception for "Fish for Life" an exhibit by Bradley Jones. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts opens several new shows this week. Today at the Davison Art Center, "Phantom Bodies--Photographs by Tanya Marcuse" opens at 12 pm, with an opening reception at 6 pm; this exhibit will run through December 13th. Wednesday at 12 pm, the opening reception for "Tripod Complex" by Ian Boyden is in the College of East Asian Studies Gallery; this exhibit will run through December 11.  Writing at Wesleyan presents writers Erica Hunt and Brando Skyhorse at 8 pm on Wednesday, at Russell House. On Thursday, Ian Boyden discusses his work at 4:30 pm. October’s First Thursday After Hours marks the opening of Mark Dion / MATRIX 173 The Wadsworth Atheneum’s Great Chain of Being – inviting you to meet in the MATRIX gallery for a talk by Mark at 6 pm. Durham’s is on Thursdays from 3 to 6. Middletown’s North End market is on Friday from 10 to 2, with the long-running market on the South Green on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-1.  At Real Art Ways in Hartford, tonight and through Sunday, a screening of "How to Change the World"; six young activists attempt to stop atomic bomb testing off the coast of Alaska. This evening at 7:30, a one time showing of "Home Less", the story a homeless model-turned-photographer, who has starred in Sex and the City and modeled for Vogue. There will be a Q + A with the director following. "Meet the Patels" opens on Wendsday, and runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  http://www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues its run of "Love and Mercy," the story of the rise and fall of Brain Wilson. They open "Mr. Holmes" this evening. It's the story of a British detective who can't resist a few more tantalizing mysteries before he retires. On Sunday, a one-time matinee of "The Impressionists", a film about the art show that traveled from Paris to Philadelpiha and featured, Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Pisarro. From Midnight to 1am, Metal on Metal. The radio show dedicated to the extreme. Black, thrash, death, progressive and power metal.

And from 1 - 2 am it's Third Waves with Georgia O'Queef and Madame Ovary. We will discuss issues related to third wave feminism in the news and also play an eclectic collection of music by women artists.
From 2 - 3 it's Mom's After Hours with DJ Janis Mean and DJ Joni Bitchell. Appreciating moms and motherhood.

And from 3 - 4 it's Sing Out! Radio magazine with Tom Druckenmiller. A weekly hour long magazine format programs featuring interviews in addition to live and recorded traditional folk music.
The BBC World News follows at 4, and we start your day bright and early with Morning Edition from NPR at 5 a.m.

From 5:05-6pm stay tuned for Brass & Sass with DJ Thrasher, Orbiting the NOLA music scene, Brass & Sass features a wide range of jazz, big band jazz, blues and R&B artists from the 1920’s to the present.

From 9-10:30pm Radio Obscura with Joe McCarthy and Paco Winebox asked us to tell you that “You won't believe your eyes” when  you listen to their show.

Oblique Strategies with Biscuit comes your way at 10:30  inviting you to join in for  twists and turns through an hour of constrained musical drifting.
From 11:30-12:30am, Food Court Friends with Sierra Mist and Orange Julius  offers an hour of punk and pop punk to bang your head and let out some teen angst to. 

At 12:30am The Chillin Factory with Noah G. and DJ So Fresh So Clean presents quality hip hop analysis and dissection.

From 1:30-2:20am, it' s High Times with DJ Woo, features up and coming electronic artists with music that will elevate your existence.

At 2:30 RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald explores music from around the world.

At 3:30 The Shortwave report (from Pacifica) offers a summary of the news headlines from around on shortwave radio.

BBC World news comes your way from 4 to 5am, followed by Morning Edition from NPR.

Durham’s is on Thursdays from 3 to 6. Middletown’s North End market is on Friday from 10 to 2, with the long-running market on the South Green on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-1. There’s one in Higganum Village on Friday from 3:30 to 6:30, and in Cromwell on Friday from 4 to 7. On the shore, Old Saybrook markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, on Wednesday at 7:30 a one time showing of Homme Less, the story fof athe run of a homeless model-turned-photographer, who has starred in Sex and the City and modeled for Vogue. There will be a Q + A with the director following. “Meru,” a film about three friends and their attempts to conquer the Shark’s Fin on Mt. Meru in the Himalayan Mountains of India, continues.  Also continuing is “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine,” an unflinching portrait of the Apple founder and his legacy. http://www.realartways.org


The Wadsworth Atheneum is showing "Far from the Madding Crowd" a film based on Thomas Hardy's novel and set in Victorian England introduces us to the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene, who atracts three very different suitors. Showtimes are Thursday at 8 pm. Saturday at 2 and 7 pm. 


Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues its run of Love and Mercy, the story of the rise and fall of Brian Wilson. They open Mr. Holmes on Wednesday, the story of a British detective who can't resist a few more tantalizing mysteries before he retires. On Sunday, a one-time matinee of The Impressionists, a film about the art show that traveled from Paris to Philadelpiha and featured, Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Pisarro. Also on Sunday, they open Phoenix, a german film set after WWII about an Auschwitz survivor returning home. www.cinestudio.org.

From 6-6:30 its Think Twice Radio reasserting the "watchdog" role of the media by ramping up coverage of Connecticut issues in a nonpartisan manner
Then at 6:30-8, it’s 75% Folk with Michael Benson, offering contemporary folk along with a mix of blues, jazz, world music and movie soundtracks. 
From 8-9:30 p.m. it’s  Unfocused Folk with Chip Austin
Americana music from Nashville and around the world including Folk, acoustic Country and roots-Rock from both emerging and veteran artists.
At 9:30 it’s an hour of Scandinavian Sounds with DJ Northern Lights, bringing you music from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland, and showcasing Eurovision artists, folk, and genres in-between.
From 10:30-11 it’s Romancipation with Dr. Love and DJ Smooth, where you can hear advice on dating, love, and all of the above.  
From 11 to midnight it’s Sleep Paralysis with Erin and Ethan, who chat about dreams, float on sounds, and poke around in the subconscious.
From 12-1 a.m. it’s Your Turn with Rachel Day, where a different guest each week will chronologically share songs that were fundamental in shaping who they are. 
Next up at 1 a.m. it’s an hour of Word on the Hill with DJ Breej, providing a platform for silenced minorities on campus to discuss a specific struggle and how it relates them to Wesleyan and beyond.
From 2 to 3 a.m. it’s Radio Roulette with DJ McLeary who, with mom's record collection and WESU's vinyl vault,  explores an eclectic selection of music in the onsite library.
From 3 to 4 a.m. it’s Maximum Rock and Roll for a late night does of loud rock and roll!
BBC World news comes your way from 4 to 5 a.m., followed by Morning Edition from NPR.

The Hadlyme Public Hall will host a Benefit Concert for Artists of World Peace, featuring the Artists for World Peace Ensemble Saturday at 7pm.  Included in the performance is Middle Eastern inspired music and a dance, and the International Peace Belt. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts presents tonight and Saturday at 8pm the Dorrance Dance Company in a Connecticut debut with a blend of tap and modern style. The Combat Paper Project will give an Interactive Demonstration on Saturday at 1:00, two Interactive Workshops on Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 1pm and a talk on Monday at 4:15. The R. At Hartford's Real Art Ways, opening tonight is “Blind,” a story about a recently blinded woman who's writings become a second narrative that seep into her reality. Also, opening is "How To Change The World", a documentary about Robert Hunter and associates, and the beginnings of Greenpeace. Both run through next weekend. Visit

Through Saturday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio shows the comedy "Trainwreck", a collaboration of comedian Amy Schumer and director Judd Apatow, in this new comedy. Also, beginning Sunday and running into next week is "Love and Mercy" dealing with the music of the Beachboys Brian Wilson. There's more at

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05-6 pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live with Ethan and Rachel. A sneak peek into the magical live music scene of Wes. Tune in for in-station sets from campus bands and recordings of up-and-coming artists' campus shows.

From 6 to 6:30pm it's Progress for the Planet w/Eric Hagen. Environmental news with a pro-green stance, including some environmentalist music from a variety of genres.
          
From 6:30-7pm it's the Middletown Youth Radio Project. A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre. The other 40% is Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10pm - midnight, we go In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with
Dope Dave
– where downtempo
poets and acrobatic emcees weave lyricism through various soundscapes.

At Midnight until 3am Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

And then, from 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the 
BBC World News 
- a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
