In New Haven tonight, Cafe Nine presents “The Great Gatsby” New Year’s Eve Burlesque Cabaret starting at 9.  On New Year’s Day, they bring The Detroit Cobras and The Naked Heroes to the Café Nine stage. There’s an early show Friday at 5pm with, Solin, followed by a 9 p.m. show with Entierro, Space Orphans, and LaTunda. Saturday, Café Nine’s afternoon’s Jazz Jam Session at 4:30 will be hosted by Mike Coppola and Friends this week.  Later at 9 p.m. Saturday night Café nine presents Sarcasmo, Old Self, Jules Baxter, Tommy V., Benn Grim, and Apollo Suns.  On Sunday night their Blues Boot Camp will be hosted by Greg Sherrod.  www.cafenine.com

First Night Hartford started today at 3pm. It’s a family-friendly, multicultural and alcohol-free New Year’s celebration with musicians, artists, performance groups and exhibits.  There are fireworks at 6 p.m. and midnight in Bushnell Park, and much more.  http://www.hartford.com/events

First Night Hartford includes an annual Kwanzaa celebration at Charter Oak Cultural Center from 6 to 8 p.m.  Learn the seven principles of Kwanzaa through the artistry of story, song and dance. http://www.charteroakcenter.org

Up in Hartford tonight, Blackeyed Sally’s New Year’s Eve Blues Bash headlines the New England blues super-group Night Train.  On Friday at 8:30, they bring you The Rib Rockers with Special Guests, presenting classic rock and soul. Down in New Haven, at Toad’s Place, this evening, there’s a big Extravaganza with Shakedown, playing The Dead & Beyond, Deep, and Super Trance. In Hartford, at Infinity Hall, they’ve got monster horn band, Tower of Power for two shows tonight, New Year’s Eve, at 7 and 11 p.m.  Friday night Infinity Hall Hartford presents Ted Vigil “Celebrating the Music of John Denver.” On Saturday you can hear singer/songwriter Javier Colon, Connecticut’s own winner of NBC’s “The Voice.” Special Guests Matt Cusson & Jeff Howard will also be featured.  www.infinityhall.com.

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
At Real Art Ways in Hartford the run of “Awake: The Life of Yogananda,” an unconventional biography of an Indian Swami who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920’s, continues through tomorrow.  Also continuing is “The Tale of Princess Kaguya,” a Japanese tale of a young princess who enthralls all who encounter her, but who must ultimately face punishment for her crime. 

They’re also screening “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” through tomorrow.  It’s a documentary about the women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966-1971. On Friday they open “The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness,” a rare look inside the Japanese animation Studio Ghibli with Director Hayao Miyazaki.  It runs through the weekend.  Also running Friday through the weekend is “Antartica:  A Year on Ice,” a documentary following the scientists, technicians and craftsmen who live year-round on the Antarctic continent.   www.realartways.com.

Starting at 9:30 it's The Vault with DJ Anton Banks. On the air since 1996! The Vault presents listeners with the very latest in hard techno, minimal tech-house, and leftfield mixed live each week. Regularly featuring exclusive music and mix sets from international producers and DJs.

And from 1am til 4, Leith Johnson presents the News Years spectacular to the Wesleyan and Middletown community.

Right after the Jive at Five stay tuned for:  Three hours of Roots and American music with Bill Revill’s Acoustic Blender. Bill features a thorough concert listing of events in our area and will also give away a pair of tickets for an upcoming Red Molly concert on tonight’s show.

At 8pm its time for Voice of the City with J-Cherry for an hour of live local arts and culture with in studio interviews and live performances.  

At 9pm, DJ’ Cheshire Cat offers an extended edition for Wonderland, for a free form musical romp that cover a wide spectrum from grunge to garage, prog to punk and everything in between.

At Midnight, DJ Lokash presents a retro Freestyle dance mix set. That’s followed by a documentary on the legendary Reggae icon, Bob Marley. At 2AM stay tuned for another radio documentary.

That's followed by The Rumpus Room at 8:00pm for 90 minutes of contemporary and vintage funk, soul, reggae and Afro and Latin dance floor jams.

From 9:30- Midnight. The Attention Deficit Disk Jockey with Lee presents the music of yesterday's future today.

At midnght, Rick Reaction has prepared a special radio documentary. 

 From 2:30-3 a.m. it’s #BasicBints with DJ Jui-C and DJ Kale Chip, who invite you to discuss social identity in relation to pop culture and current events through satire.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio comes your way from 3-4 a.m. for a weekly dose of DIY punk, garage rock, and hardcore from around the world.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

Then at 10pm we go In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with Dope Dave - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in our area this week. The schedule is a bit thin due to the upcoming holiday.

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown is closed until January 4th.

 In New Haven tonight, at Cafe Nine, tonight there’s the Burlesque-A-Pades Christmas Shimmy with special guests.  Café Nine reopens Friday at 5 with the Nick Dimaria Quartet, followed at 9 by Milksop:Unsung, Wasted Days, Rudeyna, and Jacket Thor.  Saturday afternoon’s Jazz Jam Session at 4:30 features Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Later Saturday night Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez headlines a show with the George Baker Band opening.  On Sunday at 3 at Café nine you can catch Thee Icepicks and Ninth Wave. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
At Real Art Ways in Hartford the run of “Awake: The Life of Yogananda,” an unconventional biography of an Indian Swami who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920’s, continues through Wednesday.  Also continuing is “The Tale of Princess Kaguya,” a Japanese tale of a young princess who enthralls all who encounter her, but who must ultimately face punishment for her crime. On Friday and Saturday they’re screening “National Gallery,” Frederick Wiseman’s film that takes you behind the scenes of this famous London museum.  On Friday a run of “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” opens. It’s a documentary about the women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966-1971.  There’s an opening night discussion with Director Mary Dore on Friday after the film, which runs through the weekend.  www.realartways.com.

At Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, they’re showing the 1946 Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, tonight and tomorrow (Wednesday). Details are atwww.cinestudio.org.

 At 9pm it’s Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat a free form music show offering a wide range of music from krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog. Tonight Cheshire Cat takes us all the way to Midnight when we kick off 3 hrs old time Christmas radio programming.

At 3am our program manager has programmed a special late night treat.
The BBC World News takes over at 4 and we start tomorrow’s broadcast day at 5 a.m. with Morning Edition from NPR.
