Good evening! It’s Friday, August 29th, and this is the Jive at Five, our community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM, WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day, and the best in free-form community programming weeknights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in our area this week:

Tonight the Buttonwood Tree reopens after being closed for renovations and invites you to join  Enzo Boscarino at 7pm for VIVA ITALY:  A narrative and music Musical Tour of Italy’s regions. A portion of the proceeds from this event will support WESU 75th anniversary capital campaign.   Saturday at 10:30 a.m. the Aligned with Source workshop continues, featuring spiritual and holistic healer Annaita Gandhi.  The topic is “Living in the Light.” On the stage Saturday at 7, a variety of artists will present “Gilbert and Sullivan Highlights.  www.buttonwood.org.

Down at New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight’s entertainment begins at 5 with Irish folk artist Sean Conlon. Later at 9omFive Stories Falling, Moving Brooklyn, and Chaser Eight share a bill at Café Nine.  Saturday afternoon Café Nine’s weekly jazz jam session will be hosted by Billy Cofrances. Tomorrow night at 9pm you can catch Elison Jackson, Kindred Queer, and Analog Sunset.  On Sunday at 4, there’s a bluegrass jam with Stacy Phillips, and the Café Nine original Sunday Night Jam features The Cobalt Rhythm Kings this week.  www.cafenine.com.

Along with the end of summer, CT offers many agricultural fairs across the state.  This weekend brings the Haddam Neck Fair to the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds. With Traditional agricultural exhibits & contests, Tractor, Truck, and draft animal pullinng cxompetitions,  a carnival midway, fair court and more, this fair kicks off Friday evening and is open through Monday.  Musical entertainment for this year includes, reunions of 2 local rock bands, “The Bus” and “Fountain head”, plus Good Night Blue Moon, Shakedown, Mark Mercier and friends, and Aztec Two Step. Tonight, Real Art Ways in Hartford, starts a run of “Frank,” a comedy about a young wannabe musician who joins an eccentric pop band, which continues through Sunday.  Also on the screen at Real Art Ways this weekend is “Jealousy,” a French drama about how a man’s life changes when he decides to leave his wife and daughter. www.realartways.org

tonight, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, opens a run of “Begin Again,” starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo in a drama about New York musicians trying to reconcile integrity and success.  www.cinestudio.org.

Now, Here’s a rundown of tonight’s programming on WESU Middletown.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm it’s Chocolate Cake with DJ Rob bringing you an hour long musical sugar high with Power-pop plus Brit-pop and singer/songwriters from the 60's to today.

Coming in at 6:30 it's a half-hour with of children’s storytelling on Story land.

At 7 make way for the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10:30pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee for  Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music from the hit makers alongside talent from our region.

Then at 10:30pm we go In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with Dope Dave - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At Midnight until 4am Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE with Clarence Scott and Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the BBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

from 6:00 to 7:00am on Saturdays it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

Followed by Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am with Francesco Fiumara, for a weekly roundup of news, music and memories from Italy.

At 6:30 Karen Stein presents “Imagine”, for 2 hours of music from around the world and down the road that aims to spread peace.
From 8:30-10pm it’s Evening Jazz with Bill Denert, Where hearing is the best experience. Featuring a broad range of swing, be-bop, and avant garde as well as a sprinkling of new releases.

From 10-11:30am Multifarious with DJ Bard and DJ Sunny D presents brief segments of music constantly interrupted by the hosts debating who has better taste in music.

At 11:30 Radio Obscura with Joe McCarthy and Pete presenting arts and culture through an abstract prism. Radio Obscura aims to replace the tiny voice inside your head with new better voices. 

From 1-3am its Dr. Pitkow and the Waste of Time No talk. No jokes. 2hs of eclectic delights.

From 3-4am The Graveyard Shift with DJ Otto Nation offers a diverse mix of music from the WESU library.

That's followed by 30 minutes of "Mind Matters" with Helen Evrard, MD. The show provides information and guest interviews on issues concerning mental illness. The focus is exploring holistic therapies and stories of individual achievement.

At 6:30,it’s Fusion Radio with James Fusion for 90 minutes of techno from around the globe mixed live since 1992. It's a vinyl world!

And at 8:00, Mike Nyce slows it down a few Beats per minute on The Warehouse. The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

From 9:30 to 11 features the Vault with DJ Anton Banks. On the air since 1996! Anton presents listeners with the very latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house and leftfield mixed live each week. The program regularly features exclusive music and mix sets from international producers and DJs.
at 11pm It’s 75 Years of... For 75 years, WESU has broadcast underground music and under-represented genres. During our 75th Anniversary, this program will feature a different genre or theme each month, with songs chosen by our listeners and staff.

At 12:30 it's an hour of Sussurus. Tune in for grunge, rock, folk and other whisperings of daydreaming music in the nighttime.

At 1:30 am it's and hour of Maximum Rock n' Roll Radio. A weekly radio show featuring the best DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n' Roll collection!

From 2:30 to 4am, stay tuned for The Graveyard Shift with DJ Otto Nation.
The BBC World News kicks on at 4am followed by Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.

Down New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight at 9 they’ve got Elis Lynn, Mercy Choir, and Buck McGrane at 8. Wednesday’s entertainment begins at 5 with La Cantina Flamenco, followed at 7 by Buzz Gordo’s Ski Lodge, with a third show at 9 featuring The Travis Moody Band.  On Thursday they bring you Post Modern Panic, Wess Meets West, and The Oddbodies.  On Friday at 5, Irish folk artist Sean Conlon takes the stage, followed at 9 by Five Stories Falling, Moving Brooklyn, and Chaser Eight.  Saturday afternoon’s weekly jazz jam session is with Billy Cofrances 4:30, followed at 9 by Elison Jackson, Kindred Queer, and Analog Sunset.  On Sunday at 4, there’s a bluegrass jam with Stacy Phillips, and their original Sunday Night Jam at 8 features The Cobalt Rhythm Kings.  www.cafenine.com.

On Friday the Buttonwood Tree reopens after being closed for renovations.  Friday night at 7pm, Enzo Boscarino, presents VIVA ITALY:  A narrative and music Musical Tour of Italy’s regions. Along with the end of summer, CT offers many agricultural fairs across the state.  This weekend brings the Haddam Neck Fair to the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, the run of “Rich Hill” continues through Thursday.  This Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film chronicles the turbulent lives of three boys living in an impoverished midwestern town.  Also running through Thursday is “To Be Takei,” a chronology of the seven decades of Star Trek’s George Takei’s life.  On Tuesday their monthly event, “Taste,” features Chef Chris Prosperi, and is hosted by Rand Richards Cooper, contributing writer for the New York Times and Bon Appetit.  On Friday they start a run of “Frank,” a comedy about a young wannabe musician who joins an eccentric pop band, which continues through Sunday.  Also opening Friday and running through the weekend is “Jealousy,” a French drama about how a man’s life changes when he decides to leave his wife and daughter. www.realartways.org
 
At Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema in Hartford, Martin Scorsese’s Masterpieces of Polish Cinema series continues, with a different film each day.
