Good evening! It’s Friday, Nov. 29th,. This is the Jive at Five - our daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming weeknights and weekends.  I'm Ben Michael. Thanks for joining us! 

Now for our rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week.


 The City’s of Middletown’s Holiday on Main Street festivities kicked off at 4:00 pm this afternoon, starting at the South Green with Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree. More online at www.arts2go.org     

Tonight, here in Middletown Sez Zion takes the stage at Scatz Restaurant and Jazz Lounge, on Main Street Ext.  Tomorrow, Saturday night Talented vocalist Rahsaan Langley takes the Scatz stage. www.scatzrestaurantandlounge.com

Also here in Middletown, at the Buttonwood Tree, tonight,  the Middletown High School Art Club hosts an opening event from @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm for their student sponsored gallery show. This Saturday morning at Thee buttonwood Tree kicks off with Tai Chi and community yoga. Saturday night Jazz vocalist Mary Ellen Lonergan will be performing songs from the Great American Songbook and Standards. Alex Nakimovsky will be joining her on piano while Phil Bowler plays bass.  On Sundays, Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood at 1 pm, as Rumpus, an invitation to express the rhythm inside you, takes place inside. All are welcome. You are also invited to help prepare the vegetarian meal beforehand at 11 am at First Church Congregational on Court Street. Sunday afternoon at 2:30 John Basinger performs from Book 11 of Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Books will be provided to follow along with. www.buttonwood.org


Down in New Haven, at CafĂ© Nine, tonight Steve Broderick and The 100 Watt Suns take the stage with James Mauri Four and Chaser Eight opening the show.  Cafe Nine’s Saturday afternoon’s weekly Jazz Jam will be hosted by Billy Cofrances. Saturday night Five in the Chamber and the Amanda Gregg / Chris Wuerth Duo duo make for a night of roots and bluegrass music at The Nine. Sunday Night brings Blues Boot Camp with Greg Sherrodwww.cafenine.com.

Up in Hartford, The Beehive Queen, Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez, return to the Blackeyed Sally’s stage.  Tomorrow/Saturday night, the Mike Crandall Band  plays the blues at Sally’s. www.blackeyedsallys.com.


The Middletown Symphonic Band will be performing a Christmas Concert at the First Congregational Church in Wallingford, CT on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The church is located at 23 South Main Street in Wallingford. Admission is free. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

At Cinestudio, The Trinity College cinema in Hartford,  Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine staring Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin continues through Saturday. Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm The National Theatre presents a stage production of Shakespeare’s complex and profound play about the human condition, Hamlet. Sunday evening Cinestudio begins a run of Wong Kar-wai’s latest film, The Grandmaster for the action packed historical look at Bruce Lee’s legendary martial arts teacher. www. cinestudio.org

Right after the Jive at Five stay tuned for: 

Chocolate Cake with DJ Rob offering an hour long musical sugar high featuring Power-pop plus Brit-pop and singer/songwriters from the 60's to today.

 at 6:30 Sistah Tee presents the Universal Sound Wave - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, featuring  up and coming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music alongside the hit makers.

From 10 until Midnight, we go In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with Dope Dave - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

At Midnight until 2am Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE with Clarence Scott and Shantay Scott  A contemporary mix of Christian  hip hop Rnb and Gospel.

At 2 to 2:30am it's Bassment Beats with DJ Lokash - bringing you the latest in aboveground & underground hip-hop DJ Lokash switches over to his new World Show – for the best in  Global Bass.

At 3am Maximum Rock & Roll Radio features international DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll radio record collection.

+Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at  for a weekly, hour- program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the BBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s the Celtic CafĂ© with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy CaffĂ© Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am with Francesco Fiumara, the former host of WESU's own WESParla - A weekly roundup of news, music and memories from Italy.

Things kick into swing on Black Friday right here in Middletown

Real Art Ways in Hartford, RAW is closed for tonight for Thanksgiving.  Friday night Real Art Ways opens, the documentary “Muscle Shoals” telling the story of the unlikely breeding ground for some of the most creative music in American history.
