Weds 9-25-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Wednesday, September 25th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Right about now, here in Middletown,  it’s time for The Russell Library’s Scrabble Wednesday weekly gathering, followed by a meeting of the Connecticut Poetry Society. The library is closed Friday from 9 am to 1 pm for staff development, and they host Yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning. www.russelllibrary.org
This evening, The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown’s Local Author Program features Cana Buckmir, L.M. Pampuro, and J.R. McCabe. On Thursday, bookstore founder Roxanne Coady holds a conversation with Wesleyan President Michael S. Roth to discuss “Safe Enough Spaces,” his manifesto on current issues in higher education. Russian author Yuz Aleshkovsky speaks with Duffield White and Susanne Fusso on Friday about his novels, “Nikolai Nikolaevich” and “Camouflage.” It’s the monthly Philosphy Night on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon they host a session of the Well-Read Black Girl Book Club to discuss “Dear Haiti, Love Alaine.” Kids’ events continue this week and include learning  Spanish, comic book making, and more. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday brings their monthly event, Words & Music. Tomorrow/Thursday  Jason D. Williams and the Nathaniel Hintz Trio take the stage at Café Nine. Friday’s 5pm Live music happy Hour set features Eric Lapenna. Their Friday night main event features Richard Barone and Glenn Mercer, appearing with Dan Greene. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, and the Saturday night late show headlines Akello Jackie & Knobe Band, performing with the Southwind Social Club. The Café nine Sunday Buzz Matinée features the Balkun Brothers, and they round out the weekend Jesse Dayton, Mike Stinson, and the Nathaniel Hintz Trio for their Sunday evening show. http://www.cafenine.com/  
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight, their weekly Wednesday night Community Blues Jam is hosted by Tim McDonald, and on Thursday its Liviu’s Invitational with Special guests. On Thursday evening, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts Middlesex Drum Circle .The Ebin-Rose Trio and Local Honey perform on Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop for Self-Awareness happens Saturday morning at TH Buttonwood, and there’s a Youth and Teens Watercolor painting Class Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening, you can enjoy acoustic American folk-rock and pop by The Kennedys. FISTFUL OF JOKES, PREMIER CONCERTS, AND MANIC PRESENTS: Comedian Hannibal Buress at The College St Music Hall in New Haven, tonight (Wednesday). Thursday night at College St, brings a live presentation of The Moth Mainstage. Over in Hamden at The Spaceland Ballroom Thursday night, Premier Concerts and Manic Presents bring Justin Townes Earle and Jesse Malin to the stage. Friday, they bring Brian Wilson and The Zombies: Something Great From '68 Tour to The Palace Theater in Waterbury.  Back at The College St Music Hall on Friday, Nahko and Medicine for The People takes the stage along with Ayla Nereo. and on Saturday, Built to Spill take the College St stage. At The Space Ballroom on Friday, you can catch Man Man with GRLwood and on Sat at the Ballroom there’s a night of laughs with Matt Braunger and Dave Hintz.  www.manicpresents.com
Infinity Hall Hartford Hartford brings you classic swing tonight with Big Bad VooDoo Daddy. On Friday, Infinity Hartford offers alternative rock with The Samples, and on Sunday they host singer/songwriter Howie Day. At Infinity Norfolk you can catch New Age and progressive rock on Thursday with the California Guitar Trio, and they’ve got blues, jazz, and more on Friday with Duke Robillard. Enjoy a folk concert on Saturday with Mary Gauthier, Gretchen Peters, and Friends, and on Sunday, they bring you jazz with Sammy Miller & The Congregation. www.infinityhall.com
In Hartford, The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music Series continues on Thursday with hip-hop artist Tang Sauce, and singer/songwriter Charlie Marie is at the Hog River Brewing Company in the evening. Hog River hosts a coffee brewing competition Friday morning, and Band of Steady Habits performs at the Old State House Farmer’s Market Friday at noon. The Nick Di Maria Quartet will be at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company Friday evening. Trinity College hosts the 23rd Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival Hartford this weekend. There’s an Oktoberfest event at the Bushnell Beer Garden Saturday afternoon, and it’s Sensual Salsa Saturday in the evening at the Red Rock Tavern. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors an Artist Talk on Thursday at the Cross Street Dance Studio called:  The Choreography of Rehabilitation: Disability and Race in Balanchine’s Agon. Pianist Paul Orgel performs music From Bach to Bruce Saturday at 8 pm at Wesleyan’s Memorial Chapel. Both events are free and open to the public. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa
Thursday night, The State House in New Haven spotlights indie rock with Vundabar, And The Kids, Indigo De Souza, and Sean Henry. The Statehouse presents a Local Indie Showcase Night on Friday with Jared Knapik, Jenny Geniuss, and Two Headed Girl. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles,” a documentary about the legacy of “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist; as well as “Say Amen, Somebody,” a documentary about the world of gospel music.  Friday Real Art Ways opens a run of Brittany Runs a mile, about a 20 something New Yorker forced to come to terms with ageing and health.  Upcoming openings include “Downton Abbey,” “Midnight Traveler, and “Monos.” Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes their run of “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” . Tomorrow/Thursday they open Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood,” a film about the turbulent ‘60’s. Sunday’s National Theatre Live matinée is “One Man, Two Guvnors,” a tribute to British comedy, and in the evening they open a run of “Aquaréla,” a celebration of the beauty and power of water. And starting at 9:30, stay tuned for a half hour of Look What I Made, with Jersey Shore. An exploration into the various creators on Wesleyan's Campus.

From 10pm-to 11, it's Windy City Sounds with McCarthy and Moore Life presenting an episodic look at different eras and genres of Chicago music.

Starting at 11 stay tuned for Splitting Hairs with Shake and Bake and McKenzie. A humorous musical discussion show dedicated to analyzing the lyrics of popular songs.

At Midnight, stick around for Noize in the Attic, Where Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You. Serving Connecticut it’s hard rock fix of classic Heavy Metal as well as the latest from the genre!

at 3am third shift listeners can catch an encore presentation of our noontime broadcast of Democracy Now!

At 4am we kick of four daytime public affairs block with BBC World Report followed by morning edition from NPR.
