Friday 9-13-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday September 13th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here is some of what is happening in our area this week:

Tonight/Friday at 8 pm, here in Middletown, The Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio will play music ranging from New Orleans traditional jazz, blues, Americana, and folk,  at the Buttonwood Tree

Up in Hartford at Black Eyed Sally’s, Tonight/Friday , Mark Hummel’s Blues Survivors perform take the stage. Saturday night, Sally’s hosts Cosmos Sunshine & Righteous Continental. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com

In New Haven, at Café Nine, The weekly 5pm Friday Live Music Happy hour set features Jenny Parrott starting at 5pm. Later tonight at The Nine, Fernando Pinto presents Tex-Mex star Augie Meyers & The Bandoleros along with Steve Mednick & Hard Road. Café Nine’s Weekly Saturday afternoon 4pm Jazz Jam session is with Garry Grippo and friends. Saturday night’s main event is the Ideat Village Rock Lottery Band Drawing, which involves musicians being randomly grouped together for a one-off gig and will have three weeks to practice and return on October 4th and 5th to perform for their challenge. At 9pm Saturday night, Café Nine will host its 25th Anniversary Tribute to Pulp Fiction with Renegade Lounge. The Café Nine Sunday Matinee brings The Grand Par Lauren Michaud and they round out the weekend Sunday night with a bill featuring Dear Rabbit, Rickolous, An Historic, and Squalloscope  http://www.cafenine.com/

At The State House in New Haven tonigh Michael Nau with Erin Durant, and S. G Carlson. Friday night The Statehouse features an assortment psychedelic, folk, Americana, and indie rock with The Go Rounds, The Right Offs, and Elison Jackson. www.statehousepresents.com

In Hartford, tonight (Fri), the Bushnell Park Beer Garden happens is open from 4-8pm. Later tonight, you can catch Improv Comedy at the Sea Tea Comedy Theater. Friday and Saturday nights there will be Full Moon Hike at Riverside Park. 
Saturday the 14th you can catch Annual LEVAS Gospel Festival and Fair in Hartford as well as Hartford’s Pride Festival 2019 from 12:00pm-6pm. The Small State Great Beer event on Saturday features brews from various Connecticut breweries. The Red Rock Tavern will host its Sensual Salsa Saturdays.  www.hartford.com/events

Tonight (Friday), the College Street Music Hall presents The Gypsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo. Barns Courtney plays at the Space Ballroom, tonight. Premiere CONCERTS AND MANIC PRESENTS bring Deerhunter + The Dirty Projectors to the Wall Street Theatre in Norwalk, Saturday night. Additionally, they’ve got Grace Vander Waal: Ur so beautiful Tour at the College Street Music Hall on Saturday www.manicpresents.com

At Infinity Hall in Norfolk, tonight, you can catch Ana Popovic and on Saturday, Albert Cummingson takes the stage. www.infinityhall.com

Tonight Hartford’s Real Art Ways concludes runs of 4 highly rated movies; David Crosby: Remember My
Name, Cold Case Hammarskjold, Mike Wallace is Here, and Honeyland. Tomorr, Friday, Real Art Ways begins runs of 2 films, The BioPic Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice as well as FIDDLER: A MIRACLE OF MIRACLES which offers viewers Rare archival footage and interviews with musical luminaries exploring the legacy of the story of, Fiddler On The Roof.   www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford opens a run of Apocalypse now Final Cut. Sunday at Cinestudio, offers a one-time screening of National Theatre Live: FLEABAG. Providing the opportunity to  see the funy, award-winning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, broadcast live from London’s West End.   http://www.cinestudio.org/

From 5:05-6:30pm stay tuned for Wild Wild Live! with DJ Celiac and DJ Opal. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30 Middletown Youth Radio Project is a 30 minute weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.
Next, from 7-8:30pm Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. In addition, she features health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

at 8:30  Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll invites you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly, and some new releases.

From 10-11pm Loxion Music Mix Show with M-Point brings listeners a showcase of the newest and best of Southern African Electronica dance music.

at 11pm stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee for a dose of unsigned Local Hip Hop.

at Midnight,  Permanent Collection with Chris offers an hour of Non-toxic creative radio.
From 1:30-3am, OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott bring a mix of contemporary and traditional urban gospel music.

From 3-5am, Back Down the Bayou with Bill Boelens presents an eclectic Louisiana and roots music show from the Banana Plantation in Baton Rouge.

And finally, from 5-6am the BBC World Report offers International news coverage.
