Good evening, it’s Thursday, January 31st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, can enjoy Robert Gordon, and The Tommy’s. The Friday Happy Hour set at 5pm features Sean Colon, and the Friday night late show features The Let Loose, Art of Huckleberry, and Southwind Social Club. Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session at 4pm is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by the Saturday evening main event with Gutter Demons and Diablogato. Mindfulness Meditation happens Saturday morning, and Rex the Dinobrarian will be in the lobby to celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day. From Midnight-1am, catch (1, 3, 5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. We deep dive into a different album every show and give them the stamp of approval or the cone of shame.

From 1-2am, there’s (1, 3, 5) Road Trip with DJ G and DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists all from the same hometown. No gas money required.

From 2-3am, tune in to (1, 3, 5) What’s Goin’ On? with Sam. Focus on an artist with songs under 1,000,000 plays and deep-dive on their career and their music. Also catch music reviews.

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight hosted by Paul Bozzi and Bill Katz. On Friday, the Story City Troupe returns to regale you with stories themed around “An Ah-Ha Moment.”  The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening the acoustic ensemble group Django’s Reserve is in the house to bring you Gypsy jazz and more.

They also continue “The World Before Your Feet,” on man’s documentary about walking the five boroughs of New York City, and “Free Solo,” a documentary about climbing El Capitan without a rope. Here in Middletown, Thursday night brings the Middlesex Drum Circle to the Buttonwood Tree. Friday night you can catch Gary Oleyar’s Soft Jazz Violin.
