Mon, 9-9 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday, September 9th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community
calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day,
WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs
sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in
free-form programming.

Here is some of what is happening in our area this week:
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds the Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of
Gratitude tonight – Hosted by Ashley Hamel. On Tuesday brings the “Rhythms of Life’ screening
and Drum Circle” a documentary about the drum circle movement “how music makes us feel
and how rhythm affects us,” followed by a Director's talk and an actual drum circle. Friday from 8-
10pm, The Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio will play music ranging from New Orleans traditional
jazz, blues, Americana, and folk. www.buttonwood.org
Black Eyed Sally’s weekly, Jazz Mondays will be happening from 8-10pm. Tuesday night brings
us Michael Palin’s 18-piece orchestra. Wednesday it will hold its weekly Community Blues Jam.
Liviu’s Invitational plays on Thursday. Friday, Mark Hummel’s Blues Survivors, one of the finest
blues harmonica players in the world, performs. Saturday night will host the Cosmos Sunshine &  Righteous Continental from 8:30-11:30pm.
In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Shana Falana, Lys Guillorn, Tall Trees.
On Tuesday you can hear local grunge, alternative, and stoner rock band The New Neighbors
Wednesday night will have a Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice. Thursday, Dany Laj and
the Looks will headline and feature Dusty Hat. This Friday’s live Happy Hour music set is with
Jenny Parrott. Later Friday Night Fernando Pinto presents Tex-Mex star Augie Meyers (Texas
Tornados) & The Bandoleros along with Steve Mednick & Hard Road playing both originals and
covers of artists like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones, Allman Brothers and Neil Young.
Café Nine Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Garry Grippo and his friends..
Saturday night’s main event is the Ideat Village Rock Lottery Band Drawing which involves
musicians being randomly grouped together for a one-off gig and will have three weeks to
practice and return on October 4th and 5th to perform for their challenge and at 9pm Cafe
Nine will have its 25th Anniversary Tribute to Pulp Fiction with Renegade Lounge. The Sunday
Matinee brings The Grand Par Lauren Michaud and they round out the weekend with Dear
Rabbit, Rickolous, An Historic (Adam Matlock), Squalloscope http://www.cafenine.com/
Tonight, Steve Rodgers hosts an Open Mic Night at The State House in New Haven featuring
Sketch tha Cataclysm.. Tuesday night LA’s psychedelic chicha band, La Chamba which is a
genre of cumbia-rock from Peru will debut in New Haven with the band The Lost Tribe, and DJ
Luis Luna. Adult Swim star David Liebe Hart will headline, with the bill featuring musicians such
as Whatever Your Heart Desires, Fat Randy, and King Bongo. Thursday, the state house will
present Michael Nau with Erin Durant, and S. G Carlson. Friday night will have an assortment of

music with genres such as psychedelic, folk, Americana, and indie rock with artists The Go
Rounds, The Right Offs, and Elison Jackson. www.statehousepresents.com
Back in Hartford on Monday, Kizomba Public Station from 6-8pm can be found at Union
Station,the Republic of Linden will host BaR Rated Trivia from 7-10pm.. The Hartford Jazz
Orchestra will play at the Arch Street Tavern. Tuesday, the West End Farmer’s Market is
happening from 4-7pm, What Trivia from 7-10pm. Wednesday brings us the MakeHartford
open house where you can have a tour, give donations, and get member information.Live
Music at the Arch Street Tavern will be brought by Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesdays and have
BaR Rated Trivia on Thursday. On the same night there will be the Sunset Sound Concert
Series Off the Record Night is hosted by DJ Christian Cajar. Friday, the Bushnell Park Beer
Garden happens from 4-8pm. Later that day Improv Comedy Night at the Sea Tea Comedy
Theater. For Friday and Saturday night there will be a Full Moon Hike at Riverside Park. Arch
Street Tavern brings local rock band Nickels Outside. Saturday the 24th Annual LEVAS Gospel
Festival and Fair can be found as well as Hartford’s Pride Festival 2019 from 12:00pm-6pm.
The Small State Great Beer on Saturday features unlimited brewings from various Connecticut
breweries. The Red Rock Tavern will host its Sensual Salsa Saturdays. “Geeks Who Drink Pub

Tomorrow/Tues Manic Presents The Growlers with Pinky Pinky at the College Street Music Hall.
On Friday night,the College Street Music Hall will also have The Gypsy Kings featuring Nicolas
Reyes and Tonino Baliardo. At the Space Ballroom Lucy Dacus will share the bill with QUinn
Christopherson, and Taylor Janzen on Wednesday. Friday night, Barns Courtney plays at the
Space Ballroom. The Wall Street Theater brings Deerhunter + Dirty Projectors PREMIER
CONCERTS AND MANIC PRESENTS Deerhunter + Dirty Projectors at the Wall Street Theatre
and Grace Vander Waal: Ur so beautiful Tour at the College Street Music Hall on

At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore, they will host an evening event with Elissa Altman on her
book Motherland on Thursday and they will be having a tag sale on Saturday.

Coming up this weekend, Wesleyan Potters is hosting a wire weaving class with Joy Raskin and
every Wednesday until October 23, they are also hosting a tapestry weaving class.
Tomorrow/Tues Evening GMChorale is hosting an open rehearsal and inviting all singers to

Tomorrow night, you can see Dweezil Zappa perform “Hot Rats & Other Hot Stuff” at Infinity Hall
Hartford. On Wednesday you can catch Jonny Lang, followed by Sister Hazel and
on Thursday and Friday, Boyfriend. At Infinity Norfolk, on Friday you can catch Ana Popovic and
on saturday, Albert Cummingson.

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is now showing 4 highly rated movies; David Crosby: Remember My
Name, Cold Case Hammarskjold, Mike Wallace is Here, and Honeyland offering one screening

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes their spotlight on The Last Black Man in San

at 12:30am on the 2nd and 4th Monday night’s Influenza with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac
invites you to dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary artists.

after that from 1:30-2:30am (2,4) you can catch The Beatles: A Week in the Life with DJ
McKenzie. This show tells the story of the Beatles, their contemporaries, and the artists and
songs that inspired them, a week at a time.
from 2:30-3:30am Roots World Radio takes you on a tour across borders and genres,
introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.
and at 3:30 Nutmeg Junction brings listeners original scripted audio theater programs that
celebrate every genre of the golden age of radio.
At 4-5am we kick off four daytime public affairs shows with the BBC World Report followed by
morning edition from NPR.
Stay tuned weekdays, for an incredible mix of public affairs from Pacifica, NPR, and
independent sources.
