Good evening, it's Friday, September 6th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown and streaming live at wesufm.org. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree presents The Story City Troupe on stage Friday/tonight at 8. On Saturday eve at The Buttonwood, BadSlax Jazz presents their funky, swinging sound. The marine mammal art show of Don Sineti continues through the month. More information at www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, it's Brian Dolzani and the Seth Adam Band. Café nine’s weekly 5pm happy hour tonight features Nicholas "Flats" Flatley, and after that tonight, there’s a fundraiser for Lou Cox of Channel 1 featuring The Vultures, DJ LOKASH, and The Rastamones. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and in the evening they bring you Fate, Thabisa, and Streetlight Shakers. The Sunday Matinée has Happy Ending, daniprobably, and Dan Greene, and they finish out the weekend with a Classic Cafe 9 Blues Jam with the Tom Crivellone Band. http://www.cafenine.com/

Tonight, at the Russell Library in Middletown, they will have The First Fridays book discussion at 7pm. Then tomorrow, Saturday, they are hosting Eliminate the Sugar Craving at 9:30 am, Swap your Stuff: Accessories Style at 10 am, and a Climate Action Art event with Chispa.org in the afternoon from 1pm-3pm. Tonight at 8pm, The State House is having Field Day, The Redactions, and Kyle Trocolla and the Strangers. On Saturday, their improvised music series continues with Multiplex 4. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford, On Friday, the Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open from 4 to 8pm. On Saturday from 10 to noon, the Cedar Hill Cemetery holds a mystery scavenger hunt.

The Hartbeat Music Festival, a free, day-long celebration of local and regional music, is Saturday at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. Guitar Under the Stars with Daniel Salazar and his ensemble of international musicians and symphony players is Saturday night in Bushnell Park. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you The Sadists, A Beautiful War, Residual Self, A Matter Of Fact, and The 30th Of February on Friday.

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts kicks off the annual concert calendar with “Bach to School” in Memorial Chapel this evening at 8pm. The Connecticut Flute Orchestra performs in Memorial Chapel on Sunday at 2.


Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Mike Wallace Is Here,” offering an unflinching look at the legendary reporter. Also playing is “Honeyland,” about the tensions between a Macedonian beekeeper and an itinerant family, and "David Crosby: Remember My Name,” about the legendary musician perhaps best known as a member of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford will continue to screen “Los Reyes,” until Saturday Sept 7th, a film about teens and dogs in a Chilean skateboarding park. Tonight at 10pm they have an added late showing of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” On Sunday they open “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” about a man who attempts to reclaim his childhood home, a Victorian house in the Fillmore District. Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown

Right after the Jive, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10- Midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for Overdrive with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.
