Tues 11-20-18 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday, November 20th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Laughter Yoga with Dawn today, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing. Kitty Kathryn and The Jazz Professors are in the house Friday night with modern, progressive, and blues jazz. Kerri Powers takes the stage Saturday with country blues and more. Enjoy Rosie Warren’s art exhibit of abstracts throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine, Wild Yawp, Swimming Bell, and daniprobably are on the bill for tonight. The Nine brings you Dean Falcone’s Annual Thanksgiving Vomitorium on Wednesday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Joyce “The Voice” Catalano, along with the Kat, Matt, & Tor Trio, followed by a special Thanksgiving edition of Shake ‘n’ Vibrate.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and on Saturday night it’s Will Dailey, Joey Wit, and the Shellye Valauskas Experience. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Birdmen and Eric Nassau, and they finish out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts Bas and The Milky Way Tour this evening, along with Rexx Life Raj, Correy C., and more. The Deep Banana Blackout annual Thanksgiving eve show on Wednesday features the Funky Dawgz Brass Band. The annual Black Friday Show headlines Chris Webby, appearing with Anoyd, Rook, and more. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics. The Community Blues Jam with Tommy Whalen happens on Wednesday. On Friday, they bring you rock ‘n’ soul with Christine Ohlman &; Rebel Montez.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Manic Presents brings you Bob Dylan and His Band to the Palace Theater in Waterbury Tonight. They’re at the Space Ballroom on Wednesday with Shakedown, and on Friday they’ve got The Felice Brothers and Not My Sister. The weekend at The Space continues with Presence CT: Led Zeppelin Tribute on Saturday, and Why? Plays Alopecia and Lala Lala on Sunday.  www.manicpresents.com

At Infinity Hall Hartford, it’s funk and rock on Wednesday with Pink Talking Fish. Enjoy gags, jokes, slapstick and more on Friday with Avner the Eccentric. It’s blues on Saturday with the Balkun Brothers and Delta Generators. On Sunday at 4 pm, they bring you a family show with Mario the Maker Magician. At Infinity Norfolk, they’ve got classic pop on Friday with the Soul Sound Revue Dance Party. On Sat, enjoy jazz and rock with Beau Bolero, a Steely Dan Tribute Band.   www.infinityhall.com

Middletown Arts &; Culture Office wants you to know about the 63rd annual Exhibit and Sale at Wesleyan Potters starting Friday at 10 am, running through December 9th.
There’s a gala opening reception Friday at 5 pm for this year’s theme: Celebrating 70 Years of Creativity. Proceeds for this nonprofit benefit the pottery school and provide local scholarships.  There’s Yoga & Meditation with Leah at Stage Left Dance Studio Friday at 5 pm. The city’s Ice-Skating Rink at Harbor Park opens Saturday at 11 am. And the Middlesex Music Academy on Main Street invites musicians to their Student Rock Band ensemble Saturday at 1 pm, where you can hone your skills of playing in a band.   www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds their annual Thanksgiving Eve Party Wednesday starting at 5 pm. Turkey Hangover happens Friday night with Lament, Our own Destruction, Devil Inside, and Threatpoint. On Saturday you can catch The Shape, Make Danger, Left Hand Backwards, and Fear the Masses. The Holiday Light Fantasia drive-through at Goodwin Park in Hartford opens Thursday at 5 pm. And Winterfest Hartford opens its free skating rink in Bushnell Park Friday at 11 am. It’s open seven days a week. www.hartford.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Prospect,” a sci-fi film that takes place on an alien moon, and “Deconstructing the Beatle’s Magical Mystery Tour,” a multimedia presentation about the Beatles’ production techniques, through Wednesday. Also continuing is “The Old Man &; The Gun,” about an old convict who escapes from San Quentin. On Friday they open “Maria by Callas,” a biopic about the legendary opera singer that includes never before seen material. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Wings of Desire,” a Wim Wenders film about war-scarred Berlin, through Wednesday. The National Theatre Live film on tonight is Alan Bennet’s “The Madness of George III,” the first-ever live performance from Nottingham Playhouse. On Thursday they open a run of “A Simple Favor,” a neo-noir-style film about a perfect mommy vlogger and her disappeared friend. “The Sisters Brothers,” an American Western by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, opens Sunday. at 8pm The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry is a weekly show featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music.
from 9-10pm The Test Patterns Show brings you The sound of things falling
down the stairs.
at 10pm  (1,3,5) The Audible Underground with DJ Joshinvents. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

from 11-midnight, stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

at midnight (1,3,5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. A music show that searches for and reviews narratives, musical themes, and general continuity of albums. The show selects a collection of songs (on and off the album) to dig deeply into a new album every week.

from 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists from the same hometown. No gas money required.

from 2-4am stay tuned for Upfront Soul with Sanguine fromage from Pacifica.
