Thurs 11-15-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, November 15th! This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, Joe Flood takes the Buttonwood Tree stage on Friday with Songs and Stories Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue(s). The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. Washboard Slim & The Blue Lights brings you blues, jugband and rockabilly Saturday night. Enjoy Rosie Warren’s art exhibit of abstracts throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, CafĂ© Nine brings you Robyn Hitchcock , and there’s a Record Release Show Friday with Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles, appearing with Roses Wild. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show’s got Ideat Village Rock Lottery. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Richard Buckner and Ponybird, and they round out the weekend in the evening with The Culture Showcase. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts a Blacklight Glow Party on Friday with Altered Reality and Panic on the Main Stage. They headline Zach deputy and the Yankees on Saturday, appearing with After Funk and Sarah Blacker.  www.toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. It’s blues all night on Friday with Bob Margolin, Tyler Morris  & Friends, and on Saturday you can hear Studebaker John & The Hawks. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Friday, headlining Ripe, appearing with Joon. Saturday’s lineup includes Cute Is What We Aim For, Makeout, Minshara, and Brightside. And on Sunday it’s Speak Up Storytelling, with the theme of “Mischief.” They’re at the College Street Music Hall tonight with I’m With Her: Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan, and The Brother Brothers, and on Friday with the Dark Star Orchestra: Recreating 5/5/77.  www.manicpresents.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown On Friday morning, catch Microsoft Word: Beyond the Basics. The Friends Book Sale happens Friday through Sunday. On Saturday afternoon you can enjoy Classical Harmonica with Jia-Yi He and his String Quartet. On Sunday afternoon the Readers Theater presents “Church and State” by Jason Odell Williams. At Infinity Hall Hartford tonight, it’s blues/rock with An Evening with Chris Robinson Brotherhood. On Friday you can catch Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” Tour with Sarah Lee Guthrie. Singer/Songwriter Shawn Colvin takes the stage on Saturday with Kerri Powers. You can enjoy funk and soul on Sunday with An Evening with Booker T. Jones. At Infinity Norfolk, it’s alternative rock and Americana with Carbon Leaf tonight. And You can catch the Chris Robinson Brotherhood there on Friday evening. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to free recital, Rags and Riches for the Harpsichord, at Memorial Chapel on this evening at 6 pm. There’s a performance of “Mr Burns, a post-electric play,” Friday through Sunday at the CFA Theater. Enjoy a free guided tour of the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition at the Zilkha Gallery on Saturday at 1 pm. On the Middletown Arts and Culture Calendar this week, the Community Foundation of Middlesex County holds a Pre-Holiday Fun and Friendraiser at Chester Marketplace on tonight at 5:30 pm. You can still make it over! Stroll the booths, enjoy a glass of wine and take a chance on door prizes to benefit the CFMC fund. The Middletown Recreation Department hosts Turkey Bingo for Everyone Friday at 5 pm at the Senior & Community Center. Cherry Street Station holds Danksgiving V Friday with Insano Vision, Over the Line, and Half Dragon. On Saturday, it’s Continuum, Necrosexual, Owl Maker, and Dialith. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Tonight at 6:30, the Russell Library in Middletown hosts a showing of Veterans of Color.

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Border,” a supernatural romantic thriller about a border guard with a special superpower, and “On Her Shoulders,” an award-winning documentary about 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad and the story of genocide in Iraq. There’s a one-time showing of “Brewmaster,” a love letter to beer, tonight. On Friday they open “Searching for Ingmar Bergman,” a documentary of the famous Swedish director, and “Prospect,” a sci-fi film that takes place on an alien moon. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio opens a two-day run of “Blaze,” inspired by the songwriter who began the Texas outlaw music movement. On Friday, there’s a showing Steven Spielberg’s classic “Jurassic Park.” “Degas – Passion for Perfection,” will be screened Sunday as part of their Exhibition On Screen series, and they also open “Wings of Desire,” a Wim Wenders film about war-scarred Berlin. Right after the jive at Five  stick around for Homegrown with Robbie DeRosa playing Connecticut connected artists treating listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, and information about live shows in the area.

At 6:30, its Imagine with Karen Stein offering 90 minutes of Peace through music.

from 8:00-9:30pm  you can enjoy Evening Jazz with Bill Denert offering a broad range of swing, bebop and experimental sounds with a sprinkling of new releases, where "Hearing is the best experience"

at 9:30 Let's Get Quizzical with DJ Crybaby and MC Megastar brings you a radio talk show that features two hosts trying to confound their guests - and each other - through trivia. 

From 10-11pm it's The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutants - an exploration of the influence of american cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, Peruvian Punk, and so much more. 

Until midnight is This Just In with dj willy j, providing soundtracks and reactions to the most eye-popping news stories of the week.

From midnight to 1, it's Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee. Jazzalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period of each week. 

From 1-2am, DJ Jackson brings you the sonic hour - focusing on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etcetera. The show will compare music from a previous generation with its contemporaries. 

Playing until 3 is What The Funk with DJ Jagged Little Thrill and DJ Amoroso, exploring George Clinton's concept of "the Funk," as it appears across genres and generations. 

From 3-4am is the Hour Of Slack: Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others. 

Rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
