11-22-18 Jive - Thanksgiving!

Good evening, it's Thursday, November 22nd - Happy Thanksgiving!. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, Kitty Kathryn and The Jazz Professors are at the Buttonwood Tree Friday night with modern, progressive, and blues jazz. Kerri Powers takes the stage Saturday with country blues and more. Enjoy Rosie Warren’s art exhibit of abstracts throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine, Friday’s Happy Hour features Joyce “The Voice” Catalano, along with the Kat, Matt, & Tor Trio, followed by a special Thanksgiving edition of Shake ‘n’ Vibrate.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and on Saturday night it’s Will Dailey, Joey Wit, and the Shellye Valauskas Experience. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Birdmen and Eric Nassau, and they finish out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts The annual Black Friday Show tomorrow, headlinining Chris Webby, appearing with Anoyd, Rook, and more. On Saturday they bring you Felly, with Gyyps & Trip Carter. www.toadsplace.com

At Infinity Hall Hartford, enjoy gags, jokes, slapstick and more on Friday with Avner the Eccentric. It’s blues on Saturday with the Balkun Brothers and Delta Generators. On Sunday at 4 pm, they bring you a family show with Mario the Maker Magician. At Infinity Norfolk, they’ve got classic pop on Friday with the Soul Sound Revue Dance Party. Middletown Arts &; Culture Office wants you to know about the 63rd annual Exhibit and Sale at Wesleyan Potters starting Friday at 10 am, running through December 9th.
There’s a gala opening reception Friday at 5 pm for this year’s theme: Celebrating 70 Years of Creativity. Proceeds for this nonprofit benefit the pottery school and provide local scholarships.  There’s Yoga & Meditation with Leah at Stage Left Dance Studio Friday at 5 pm. The city’s Ice-Skating Rink at Harbor Park opens Saturday at 11 am. And the Middlesex Music Academy on Main Street invites musicians to their Student Rock Band ensemble Saturday at 1 pm, where you can hone your skills of playing in a band.   www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds Turkey Hangover happens Friday night with Lament, Our own Destruction, Devil Inside, and Threatpoint. The Holiday Light Fantasia drive-through at Goodwin Park in Hartford is opening right now! And Winterfest Hartford opens its free skating rink in Bushnell Park Friday at 11 am. It’s open seven days a week. www.hartford.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Prospect,” a sci-fi film that takes place on an alien moon, and “Deconstructing the Beatle’s Magical Mystery Tour,” a multimedia presentation about the Beatles’ production techniques, through Wednesday. Also continuing is “The Old Man &; The Gun,” about an old convict who escapes from San Quentin. On Friday they open “Maria by Callas,” a biopic about the legendary opera singer that includes never before seen material. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford opens a run of “A Simple Favor,” a neo-noir-style film about a perfect mommy vlogger and her disappeared friend. “The Sisters Brothers,” an American Western by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, opens Sunday. From 8 - 9:30 it's Evening Jazz with Bill Denert. A broad range of swing, be bop and avante garde with a sprinkling of new releases, where “Hearing is the best experience.”

And from 9:30 to 10, catch Spicy! Spicy! Hot! Hot! With Beizo Bish and Jew Chainz. Scalding hot takes on a new area of pop culture each week, featuring topical tracks and a variety of dynamic guests.

From 10-11 it’s The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutants – an exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, Peruvian Punk, and more.

From 11 - midnight it's Goats and Kids with DJ Oat Heiress, painting a decade with a genre, goats and kids examines the best songs of their day and concludes with current recommendations that could have evolved from that scene.

from midnight to 1 it's Jazzalicious definition with DJ Stocks’n’Socks and MC McGee. Jazzaalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

And from 1 - 2am it's Middletown by Moonlight with DJ Monsoon Moon. A tour of the rare and obscure best albums from around the globe that you wish you had known before.

From 2 - 3am, Dovetail brings you Butterfingers – dropping funky tunes, one groovy slip at a time.

From 3-4 it’s the hour of slack. Reverend ivan stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various subgenii and others.

The BBC World News comes on at 4 followed by Morning Edition from NPR at 5.
