11-23-18 Jive

Good evening, it's Friday, November 23rd!. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, Kitty Kathryn and The Jazz Professors are at the Buttonwood Tree tonight with modern, progressive, and blues jazz. Kerri Powers takes the stage Saturday with country blues and more. Enjoy Rosie Warren’s art exhibit of abstracts throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine, this evening’s Happy Hour features Joyce “The Voice” Catalano, along with the Kat, Matt, & Tor Trio, followed by a special Thanksgiving edition of Shake ‘n’ Vibrate.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and on Saturday night it’s Will Dailey, Joey Wit, and the Shellye Valauskas Experience. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Birdmen and Eric Nassau, and they finish out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts The annual Black Friday Show tonight, headlinining Chris Webby, appearing with Anoyd, Rook, and more. On Saturday they bring you Felly, with Gyyps &; Trip Carter. www.toadsplace.com

Manic Presents brings you The Felice Brothers and Not My Sister on this evening at the Space Ballroom. The weekend at The Space continues with Presence CT: Led Zeppelin Tribute on Saturday, and Why? Plays Alopecia and Lala Lala on Sunday.  www.manicpresents.com

At Infinity Hall Hartford, enjoy gags, jokes, slapstick and more tonight with Avner the Eccentric. It’s blues on Saturday with the Balkun Brothers and Delta Generators. On Sunday at 4 pm, they bring you a family show with Mario the Maker Magician. At Infinity Norfolk, they’ve got classic pop tonight with the Soul Sound Revue Dance Party. On Sat, enjoy jazz and rock with Beau Bolero, a Steely Dan Tribute Band.   www.infinityhall.com

Middletown Arts &; Culture Office wants you to know about the 63rd annual Exhibit and Sale at Wesleyan Potters, running through December 9th.
There’s a gala opening reception starting right now for this year’s theme: Celebrating 70 Years of Creativity. Proceeds for this nonprofit benefit the pottery school and provide local scholarships.  There’s Yoga & Meditation with Leah at Stage Left Dance Studio Friday, also now! The city’s Ice-Skating Rink at Harbor Park opens Saturday at 11 am. And the Middlesex Music Academy on Main Street invites musicians to their Student Rock Band ensemble Saturday at 1 pm, where you can hone your skills of playing in a band.   www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds Turkey Hangover happens tonight with Lament, Our own Destruction, Devil Inside, and Threatpoint. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways “Maria by Callas,” a biopic about the legendary opera singer that includes never before seen material. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues a run of “A Simple Favor,” a neo-noir-style film about a perfect mommy vlogger and her disappeared friend. On Sunday, they open “The Sisters Brothers,” an American Western by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Check the website for times.  http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the Jive at Five, stick around for Wild Wild Live! With Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 feature Grand Central Station (1.3.5) with DJ Jeny Doll – travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band jazz, swing, and rockabilly, and some new releases.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott.  offering christian urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
