Good evening, it's Monday, June 25th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here’s our rundown of events in our area this week as well as our evening lineup here on WESU Middletown.

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you the Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Bill Katz. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets at the buttonwood this Thursday. Friday, and award-winning pop singer/songwriter Jann Klose (pronounced Yann Close) takes the Buttonwood Tree stage Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and The Buttonwood invites you to enjoy the Food Truck on the Farm music festival at Lyman Orchards with a Silent Auction to benefit The Buttonwood Tree from 11 am to 5 pm.  Funds raised will support the purchase of a new sound system for the Buttonwood. Back downtown, The Saturday evening show at The Buttonwood a features the Dialect Trio with Mario Pavone for a night of Jazz. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays presents Hannah Wicklund & The Steppin /Stones with Chaser Eight, tonight. Tomorrow/ Tuesday Café Nine features a night of Hip Hop with Old Self, Juswan, Jules Baxter, and more. It’s another Words & Music on Wednesday. This Thursday you can catch Pearl Earl, Jacques LeCoque, and Gvrden at The Nine. Friday, Café Nine’s 5pm Happy Hour features DW Ditty. The Friday night main event features Heavy Weight, Indoor Living, and Adam Wolf. Café Nine’s Saturday weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, this week.  Saturday night’s bill features Witch Hair, appearing with Ports of Spain, Every Branch, and more. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s the usual Jazz Mondays tonight with the Sanah Kadoura Group. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesdays. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday at Blackeye’s Sally’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational features special guests. Friday night, Sally’s spotlights guitarist Daniel Salazar, and Saturday’s headliners are Dan Brother and Tom Forst. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/   

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, they have the Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends tonight. Hard Rocker’s King’s X appear at Toad’s on Friday, and Zach Deputy headlines the Saturday show, appearing with Sun-Dried Vibes and Christopher Hawley. www.toadsplace.com

The Middlesex County Historical Society invites you to a Book Launch event tonight at 7 pm with Robert and Kathleen Hubbard, authors of “Hidden History of Middlesex County, CT.” Details at www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts Dr. Helen Evrard on Tuesday evening with her new workshop, Language for Brain Health.  Also at Russell Library Tuesday, there’s Origami in the evening, and the Classic Mystery Book discussion series continues with Agatha Christie’s “A Pocketful of Rye.” Scrabble Wednesday happens at 2 pm, and they’ll screen the movie “Wonder” at 2:30 pm. In the evening, author Frank Connolly will speak on the Insider’s View to City Hall. The Connecticut Poetry Society holds its monthly meeting. They sponsor marriage and family therapist Tatiesha Perry Thursday evening with her workshop, Practicing Self Care. Up in Hartford, Riverfront Recapture sponsors a weekly contemporary dance class, Dance Current, Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Great River Park in East Hartford at 6 pm.

StartStruck: A Cosmic Circus, performed by Cirque Us, happens Tuesday night at the CREC Theatre for the Performing Arts in Hartford.

The Audio Feed music series in Hartford continues Wednesday at noon on Constitution Plaza. This week, enjoy Robert C Fullerton.

The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series continues Thursday at noon with this week’s featured artist, The Magnetic

Its Fourth Thursday again and the Hartford Hot Several Brass Band performs with a special guest at the Hanging Hills Tasting Room on Ledyard St. starting at 6 pm.

Upward Hartford sponsors Food Trucks and Music every Friday from noon to 2 pm at the Stilts Building Plaza, with this week’s featured performers, Sarah Rose Jazz.

It Pop Up Shakespeare this Friday at 12:30 pm with members of the Capital Classics Theatre Company as they present scenes from “Pericles, Prince of Tyre.”

The Hartford Proud drill, Drum & Dance Corp. performs Friday at 5 pm at the Pratt Street Patio. Details at

The Elizabeth Park Concert Series in Hartford continues this Wednesday with a performance by the Goza Latin Band at 6:30 pm. www.elizabethparkct.org

At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown, they host Matthew Dicks on Wednesday with “Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling.” It’s Philosophy Night on Saturday and you’re invited to join in the reflective discussion. Manic Presents offers Tim Barry, Roger Harvey, and Chistian Marrone this Thursday at the Space Ballroom in Hamden.  Manic presents a Blues Super Session on Friday with the James Montgomery Band featuring Christine Ohlman, Cliff Goodwin and the Uptown Horns.  On Sunday they feature Mihali, and Tim Palmieri. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues. “Summer 1993,” a Spanish film about grief and memory, and “The Most Unknown,” a documentary about science and discovery. Also continuing is “Adrift,” based on the true story of two sailors lost on the ocean after a hurricane. On Friday they open “Breath,” a coming of age story based in remote Australia, and “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf,” a documentary of the artist/designer. The afternoon movie is “First Reformed,” a thriller about a middle-aged pastor’s crisis of faith. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Tully,” a film exploring a mother-nanny relationship. On Sunday they screen the National Theatre Live production of “Yerma,” about a woman’s desperate desire to have a child. Check the website for offerings and times.

Free Movies in the Park continues in Hartford on Saturday with a performance of “Willy Wonka” with Free carousel rides & Arch tours from  6:30-8:30pm. Show time is 8:45pm

Films on Foss an outdoor movie series created by the Middletown Mayoral Youth Cabinet in partnership with the City of Middletown and Wesleyan University returns to Wesleyan’s Foss Hill this summer family films screening that are FREE and open to the public. This Saturday night June 30, you can catch Toy Story. All events start at 7:00 pm with a community picnic with games and food trucks, and the movies start at 8:30 pm (or shortly after, depending on the time of the sunset).  https://www.filmsonfoss.com/

From 9:30pm-11pm Cruiser’s Radio Program with Jack Sullivan features Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.

Franco is in the house from 12:30-2:30am for a mix of Disco and dance floor hits from the 70’s and 80s.

After that things get weird with The Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry. The compendium of ranters, media barrage collage artists, for an hour of weird indie audio underground.
